G. Lloyd Spencer

George Lloyd Spencer (born March 27, 1893 in Sarcoxie , Jasper County , Missouri , †  January 14, 1981 in Hope , Arkansas ) was an American politician ( Democratic Party ) who represented the state of Arkansas in the US Senate .

Missouri-born Lloyd Spencer moved his family to Okolona , Arkansas, in 1902 . He attended the public schools and the Peddie School in Hightstown ( New Jersey ), before he trained at Henderson College in Arkadelphia graduated (Arkansas). During the First World War he served as a seaman in the US Navy . Between 1931 and 1943 he was a member of the Navy Reserve, where he held the rank of Lieutenant Commander .

Spencer, who had lived in the town of Hope since 1921, and worked in the banking and farming industries there, was named a US Senator by Governor Homer Martin Adkins on April 1, 1941 without prior political experience . In Washington, DC , he succeeded the resigned John E. Miller and remained there until January 3, 1943. In the following election, he no longer ran; instead, he enlisted for military service in the US Navy.

After the end of the war, Spencer never returned to the political scene. He became director of the Arkansas-Louisiana Gas Company based in Shreveport ( Louisiana ) and was also in a leading position for the Southwest Arkansas Water District operates. He also served as Vice President of the Red River Valley Association for Arkansas and President of the First National Bank of Hope .
