James D. Walker

James David Walker (born December 13, 1830 near Russellville , Kentucky , USA , † October 17, 1906 in Fayetteville , Arkansas , USA) was an American politician and US Senator from Arkansas between 1879 and 1885. He was also a member the democratic party .

Career

James David Walker was born on December 13, 1830 near Russellville, Kentucky. He attended private schools, followed by the Ozark Institute and Arkansas College , both in Fayetteville, Arkansas. Then he moved permanently in 1847 to Arkansas, where he began law study. He was admitted to the bar in 1850 and then began practicing in Fayetteville. For some time he also served as a judge in the 4th judicial district.

After the outbreak of the American Civil War , Walker served with the rank of colonel in the 4th Arkansas Infantry Regiment . He was captured near Oak Hills , Missouri in 1861 and was a prisoner of war for two years.

After the defeat of the Confederate States of America in 1865, he returned to Fayetteville and began practicing law again. He soon became a solicitor general of the state.

Later he decided to pursue a political career. He ran in the election of 1876 as a democratic elector. He was then elected to the US Senate as a representative of the state of Arkansas, where he served from 1879 to 1885. He declined to run again for re-election in 1884. After his tenure in the US Senate, he returned to Fayetteville, where he resumed his practice as a lawyer.

James David Walker died on October 17, 1906 in Fayetteville, Arkansas. He was buried in Walker Cemetery.
