Dale Leon Bumpers (born August 12, 1925 in Charleston , Franklin County , Arkansas , † January 1, 2016 in Little Rock , Arkansas) was an American politician . He was Governor of Arkansas from 1971 to 1975 and then US Senator for that state until 1999 .

Early years and political advancement

Dale Bumpers attended local schools in his home country and the University of Arkansas . He served in the United States Marine Corps during World War II . After the war, he studied law at Northwestern University in Illinois . He was then a supporter of the Democratic presidential candidate Adlai Stevenson . Bumpers opened a small law firm in his home township of Charleston in 1952. Between 1952 and 1970 he also served as a lawyer for this community. In 1968 he was appointed to the Arkansas Supreme Court as a special judge for a short time . In 1970, Bumpers ran for the Democratic nomination for governor. He had to compete against the former governor Orval Faubus . After he succeeded in beating this in the Democratic primary, he also managed to win the actual election against the Republican incumbent Winthrop Rockefeller .

Arkansas Governor

Dale Bumpers took up his new office on January 12, 1971 and was able to serve until January 3, 1975 after being re-elected in 1972. As governor, he and his wife, Betty Bumpers, advocated vaccination against various diseases. During his time, the administration was reorganized, a new tax law was passed, teachers' salaries increased and a consumer protection department was set up. The state parks were also expanded. He campaigned for improved education policy and reform of the prison system. Bumpers was a member of several governors' associations. In 1974 he was elected to the US Senate. Because of this, he resigned shortly before the end of his term as governor. As governor, he is considered a representative of a new generation of politicians in the south, including Jimmy Carter in Georgia and, a little later, Bill Clinton , also in Arkansas.

Between 1975 and 1999 Bumpers was a member of the US Senate in Washington . There he was active in several committees and campaigned again for child vaccination to combat diseases such as measles, mumps and similar other diseases. He is a supporter and friend of former President Clinton. He had been married to Betty Bumpers since 1949 , with whom he had three children. He and his wife received the Maxwell Finland Award for organizing vaccination campaigns for children in the USA .
