Simon Pollard Hughes, Jr. (born April 14, 1830 in Carthage , Tennessee , † June 29, 1906 in Little Rock , Arkansas ) was an American politician and between 1885 and 1889 governor of Arkansas.

Life

Simon Hughes attended Sylvan Academy and Clinton College in Tennessee. In December 1849 he came to Arkansas. There he was sheriff in Monroe County between 1853 and 1855 . He studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1857. He then went to Clarendon to practice law. During the American Civil War he fought in the Army of the Southern States. There he made it to the lieutenant colonel. Hughes was an MP in the Arkansas House of Representatives from 1866 to 1867 . In 1874 he was a delegate to the Conference on the Revision of the Arkansas State Constitution. From 1874 to 1877 he was Minister of Justice (Attorney General) of this state. On September 1, 1884, Hughes was elected as the Democratic Party candidate for the new governor of Arkansas.

Simon Hughes' term began on January 17, 1885. After a successful re-election in 1886, he was able to remain in the office of governor for a total of four years. During this time the Arkansas Industrial University was reformed. With the position of state geologist, a new office was created in the government. Public executions were abolished and alcoholic beverages were made more difficult to sell. After his tenure ended, Hughes became a Justice of the Arkansas Supreme Court in 1889. He held this office for 16 years. Simon Hughes died in Little Rock in June 1906 and was buried in the Mount Holly cemetery there. He was married to Ann E. Blakemore, with whom he had six children.
