Frank Durward White (born June 4, 1933 in Texarkana , Texas , †  May 21, 2003 in Little Rock , Arkansas ) was an American politician . He was a member of the Republican Party and was governor of the state of Arkansas from 1981 to 1983 .

Early years and political advancement

Frank White graduated from the New Mexico Military Institute and was accepted into the US Naval Academy in 1952 . After graduating there in 1956, he became a pilot in the Air Force . There he completed over 1,800 flight hours as a captain (captain). After the end of his service, he entered the business world in 1961. First he worked in the brokerage business and since 1973 in banking. Between 1975 and 1977, White was the head of the Arkansas Economic Development Commission. In 1980 he was nominated by his party as a candidate for the gubernatorial election. He managed to beat Democratic incumbent Bill Clinton in the election .

Arkansas Governor

Frank White's two-year tenure as governor began on January 19, 1981. White was considerably more conservative than Winthrop Rockefeller , who had been the last Republican governor of Arkansas before him. He wanted to include the biblical story of creation in the regular curriculum in schools and treat it as a science alongside the theory of evolution . That was rejected by a federal court. When he appointed the conservative ex-governor Orval Faubus to head the scandalous Veterans Ministry, it sparked a crisis within the party. In 1982 he ran for re-election. This time he was defeated by Bill Clinton.

Another résumé

After retiring, White worked for an investment firm in Little Rock and was vice president of First Commercial Bank . In 1986 he lost again to Clinton in the gubernatorial election. In 1998, Governor Mike Huckabee appointed him banking officer for the Arkansas government. Frank White died of a heart attack on May 21, 2003 in Little Rock. He was married twice and had three children in total.
