history

The area of today's Texarkana was first settled by Caddo Indians. White people populated the area around 1873 as part of the construction of the Cairo and Fulton Railroad , which met the tracks of the Texas and Pacific Railroad in what is now the city area . At this point the city of Texarkana, Texas was founded on December 8, 1873. The first development was planned and carried out by the Texas and Pacific Railroad Company and in 1876 the settlement was recognized by the Texas government.

The city grew steadily and by 1896 already had a waterworks, an electricity company, a tram, a gasworks, several local newspapers and 14,000 residents. In 1907 Texarkana, Texas was granted city rights. The city continued to grow and became an important railway junction in the southwest. The city experienced a further boom when the Red River Army Depot with an ammunition factory was built in the 1940s.

In the following decades, the city developed further and at the beginning of the 21st century, a new upturn is emerging, among other things caused by the construction of the new Interstate 49 , of Shreveport on Texarkana toward Oklahoma is run. In 2009, the factory, now renamed the Lone Star Ammunition Plant, employed around 4,500 people.

Infrastructure and traffic

An extension of Interstate Highway 49 from Louisiana to Oklahoma, which will cross Interstate 30 in Texarkana, Texas, is under construction. The US Highways 59 and 71 (towards western Arkansas and Houston ), 67 (towards Dallas and Little Rock) and 82 (towards Paris (Texas) and southern Arkansas) also run through the city . Railroad lines run in all directions with routes to Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana and Texas. Passenger traffic exists with the Texas Eagle, which connects Chicago with Los Angeles via St. Louis , Texarkana, Dallas and San Antonio . The station Texarkana Union Station is like the post office on the state line. Air traffic is handled through Texarkana Regional Airport in the Texarkana, Arkansas area. From here there are connections to the international hub Dallas / Fort Worth . TUTD (Texarkana Urban Transit Department) operates a city bus system with 7 lines in the two Texarkanas and in the surrounding villages.

The twin cities

Texarkana, Texas, forms a twin city with the city of Texarkana, Arkansas. Officially, the two cities are completely independent. In practice, however, the two cities can be understood as one unit, since most of the time one does not notice that one is crossing the state border. However, there are some differences between the two cities: Bowie County, Texas, is a so-called " dry county ", in which no alcohol can be sold. This explains the high number of liquor stores in Texarkana, Arkansas, on the state line. In the tax area there are some special regulations for the residents of Texarkana in order to balance the different tax burdens in Texas and Arkansas.
