The film Paris, Texas by Wim Wenders is named after this city, although neither the plot of the film takes place there nor a scene was recorded there.
In Paris there is a scaled-down replica of the Eiffel Tower , on which a typical red cowboy hat has been sitting since 1998.
Paris was a center of cotton cultivation and trade in the 20th century, not least due to its convenient location on a northbound traffic axis from San Antonio (which crosses the Red River near Paris ) and a central intersection of several railway lines. Although cotton is still grown today, its economic importance has declined significantly. Today the two hospitals responsible for the surrounding region are the city's most important employers.
Paris was named "Best Small Town in Texas" by Kevin Heubusch in his 1998 book The New Rating Guide to Life in America's Small Cities .
