Shangela Laquifa Wadley , actually DJ Pierce (* 22. November 1981 in Paris , Texas , United States ) is an American drag queen and reality TV personality, especially for their participation in RuPaul's Drag Race is known.

life and work

Pierce grew up in Paris , Texas, USA . In high school , he was a male cheerleader and began dressing up as a drag queen. Pierce studied at Southern Methodist University and has been friends since that time with the later drag race participant Antoine Ashley (1984-2012), better known under his drag persona Sahara Davenport .

In January 2009 Pierce first appeared publicly under the name Shangela . Pierce had choreographed a drag act for a charity event in Los Angeles . When one of the actors canceled, he himself appeared. The promoter was so impressed with Shangela's performance that he offered to book her again for the following week. In 2010, Shangela was named California Entertainer of the Year. Her drag mother is Alyssa Edwards .

RuPaul's Drag Race

After five months with various appearances as a drag queen in Los Angeles, Shangela took part as a candidate in the second season of RuPaul's Drag Race in 2010 , but dropped out in the first episode due to a lack of experience. For the third season, Shangela was invited again, this time finishing in sixth place. She received special attention for her slogan Halleloo , which the Los Angeles Times named one of the Top Terms We Learned on Reality Television in 2010 . In the following seasons, Shangela had several cameo appearances on the show, including the premiere of the fourth season and the "Snatch Game" episode of the second All-Stars season.

In 2018 Shangela took part again in the format as part of the third season of RuPaul's Drag Race: All Stars . This time she made it to the finals and shared third place with the winner of the first season BeBe Zahara Benet. Together with RuPaul, the four finalists released the song Kitty Girl , which reached number 44 on the UK Singles Charts.

Film and television career

Shangela was able to use the popularity gained from appearances at RuPaul's Drag Race for further engagements in film and television. In 2012 she appeared as a mentor on an episode of the US reality TV show Toddlers & Tiaras . Shangela was also seen in individual episodes of various TV series. Including Glee , Bones , 2 Broke Girls and The Mentalist . Together with other participants in RuPaul's Drag Race - including Trixie Mattel, Tammie Brown and Manila Luzon - she participated in a Food and Drug Administration campaign against smoking . Shangela also got a role in the short film Body of a Barbie , which was broadcast on the US TV channel BET .

In 2016, she starred in the comedy Hurricane Bianca with Bianca Del Rio in a supporting role together with former drag race participants Alyssa Edwards and Willam Belli. On the sequel Hurricane Bianca 2: From Russia with Hate, she worked again in 2018. In the same year she had a supporting role in the musical-romantic film drama A Star Is Born with Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper in the leading roles.

Together with Ross Mathews , Shangela commented on the Eurovision Song Contest 2018 in Lisbon for the US TV channel Logo .

Musical career

On August 23, 2011, Shangela released her first single, Call Me Laquifa , which is available through iTunes and other commercial music sites. The second single Werqin 'Girl was released on August 7, 2012. On March 15, 2018, the day of the finale of the third season of RuPaul's Drag Race: All Stars , Shangela released another single called Pay Me .

In 2013 Shangela appeared in the music video Gone With the Wind Fabulous of Kenya Moore . In the same year she was seen in the lyric video for Lady Gaga's single Applause with the drag queens Detox, Morgan McMichaels, Courtney Act, Willam Belli and Raven . In 2018 Shangela took part in both the vocals and the music video of the song Doll Hairs by Todrick Hall . The song is featured on Hall's third studio album Forbidden .
