RuPaul's Drag Race is an American reality show in which drag queens compete against each other. It documents RuPaul's search for “America's next drag superstar”. RuPaul takes on a double role as jury chairman in drag and moderation as a man.

The show got the green light in May 2008 and MTV Networks introduced the show to the press. The premiere took place on February 2, 2009 on the cable television station Logo . Since then, 12 seasons have appeared so far. The series received a spin-off show called Drag U , which ran from 2010 to 2012. The RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars format has existed since 2012 , in which former participants of the regular relays compete again; five seasons of this have appeared so far. From 2015 onwards several international offshoots appeared: in Chile The Switch Drag Race , Drag Race Thailand , RuPaul's Drag Race UK and Canada's Drag Race ; as well as the spin-off RuPaul's Secret Celebrity Drag Race in 2020 .

At the MTV Movie & TV Awards 2017 , the show won an award in the Best Reality Competition category. Since 2016, the show has won thirteen Primetime Emmy Awards , including RuPaul three times for best reality show host.

format

RuPaul plays a role on the show. USA Today's Lifeline describes it as follows: "RuPaul, the drag queen, will have the final say in the decisions and eliminations, while RuPaul, the man, offers candidates support with the 'Challenges'." A "Challenge", for example from a photo shoot or a commercial is a critical review of the candidates and their performance by the jury. In an episode of the tabloid magazine The Insider , RuPaul describes the show: “Don't forget ... we are Queens . That's why there will be drama. Lots of it! "

RuPaul also describes what qualities the candidates must have in order to emerge as the winner of the competition. "We are looking for charisma, uniqueness, courage and talent ( English Charisma, uniquness, nerve and talent , an allusion to the word cunt ) ... They are people who have suffered misfortune and who have transformed it into something beautiful and powerful." RuPaul added :

“Tell Tyra [Banks] that the Queen has returned and have Heidi [Klum] clean the catwalk in the meantime . I pump 'Realness' (German: authenticity) into Reality . To win the show, candidates must be a fashion designer , an American Idol, and a top model combined. And they undoubtedly have to be smarter than a fifth grader. "

Fashion journalist Merle Ginsberg and designer Santino Rice were part of the main jury for the first two seasons. From the third season, Merle Ginsberg was, because these other projects wanted to turn to, replaced by the singer Michelle Visage, who had previously worked with RuPaul. Together with famous guest jurors such as Neil Patrick Harris , La Toya Jackson , Chloë Sevigny , Lady Gaga , Dita von Teese , Ariana Grande , Jennifer Love Hewitt , Pamela Anderson or Johnny Weir , they support RuPaul in the decisions.

Logo of the special season

In season seven, Santino Rice was replaced by TV host Ross Mathews and stylist and designer Carson Kressley.

In each of the first six seasons, a candidate was chosen by the viewers via a vote on the official homepage; in each regular season, a Miss Congeniality is determined from the eliminated candidates by audience vote , which receives both a monetary and a material prize.

The specialty of the All-Stars- Seasons is that all participants have already been in at least one of the regular seasons.

Course of the consequences

Mini challenges

A frequent but not a mandatory part of the episodes are mini-challenges in which the participants have to complete small tasks. In some cases, the candidates have to dress in drag (quick drag) within a few minutes before starting the task. The winner is nominated by RuPaul and receives a cash or material prize or a benefit for the main task (for example, the election of team members).

Maxi challenges

The main tasks are decisive for the assessment by the jury. Recurring task types include

  • Create outfits from unconventional material
  • Acting
  • Rusicals either performed live or by Lip sync presented
  • Snatch Game, an adaptation of the TV program Match Game , in which the candidates take part in the role of a celebrity of their choice. The snatch game has been part of every season since season 2.
  • The makeover challenge. The participants have to dress themselves and someone else as a drag queen.
  • Balls (in the sense of dance balls ) in which the candidates have to present three outfits based on a specific motto. One of these is created directly in advance of the presentation.

runway

In each episode, the candidates have to present an outfit on a given topic on the catwalk . Depending on the task at hand, the presentation can be the main task, otherwise it can be used in any case to assess the candidates.

evaluation

Film and music recordings made as part of the Maxichallenges are presented on the catwalk. RuPaul typically names the week's top three and worst candidates, who all receive individual reviews. After consulting the jury, RuPaul announces the winner of the week, who will be rewarded with a material prize.

Lip sync for your life

The two worst participants of the week compete against each other in what is known as Lip sync for your life , in which they play a previously determined song lip-synchronously. RuPaul then announces which candidate will remain in the competition and which will be eliminated. In exceptional cases, both participants may remain or withdraw.

production

The broadcast builds in product placements in numerous ways. Each challenge has prizes such as fashion, accessories or cruises that the winners of the challenge receive; the brands are advertised. Each season also has a main sponsor like Absolut Vodka . Levitt analyzes that this shows the focus of the reality TV format on making a profit immediately when a program is first broadcast.

Charisma and offshoots

The first season was a huge hit for the three year old broadcaster Logo. The number of visitors to the show's official homepage broke all records. A second season was shot in late 2009. The castings began on May 1, 2009. The second season ran from February 2, 2010 to April 26, 2010 again on the channels Logo and VH1. The auditions for a third season began on March 29, 2010. With the beginning of the ninth season, the program switched to VH1 in the prime-time slot, while Logo broadcast repeats of the episodes in the following week.

In Canada, it was broadcast on February 15, 2009 on MuchMoreMusic. Another broadcast took place on the VH1 channel at 9 p.m., but was not advertised with a logo due to contractual obligations. In the UK , E4 began broadcasting the show on Wednesdays at 11pm on September 9, 2009.

Offshoot

As a spin-off of RuPaul's Drag Race , the show Drag U was created in 2010 , in which drag queens help heterosexual women "to find their inner diva". After three seasons, the format was discontinued.

In 2015 and 2018 seasons of The Switch Drag Race , an offshoot in Chile , were broadcast. Since 2018 Drag Race Thailand with Thai Drag Queens Art Arya and Pangina Heals broadcast; since 2019 RuPaul's Drag Race UK , with RuPaul and Michelle Visage. The jury position of Ross Matthews and Carson Kressley will be taken over by Alan Carr and Graham Norton . Canada's Drag Race has been available since July 2nd, 2020. Variants for Australia and the Netherlands have already been announced . The Dutch version of Drag Race Holland will be broadcast from September 18, 2020 and will be moderated by stylist Fred Van Leer.

From April 24, 2020, RuPaul's Secret Celebrity Drag Race was broadcast, in which celebrities supported by former participants compete.

In German-speaking countries

From April 24, 2009 the program was broadcast on TIMM in Germany . , every Friday at 8 p.m. The reality series was broadcast in the original sound with German subtitles and repeated several times after the premiere.

From July to October 2015, TLC Germany broadcast the sixth season of RuPaul's Drag Race . The synchronization of RuPaul took over the Hamburg drag queen Olivia Jones .

In June 2017, the seventh season appeared on Netflix with German synchronization . This was followed by the eighth, ninth and tenth seasons by October 2018. In these seasons RuPaul was dubbed by actor Maximilian Laprell . Since January 2019, all seasons except All Stars can be seen on Netflix, but from seasons 1 to 6 without German synchronization.

In March 2013, the Munich production company Phantomfilm announced that it had acquired the license for the German market and that recordings should start in 2013. However, these plans were not implemented because the search for a television station for it remained fruitless.

June 2019 announced ProSieben with Queen of Drags on a program along the lines of RuPaul's Drag Race. However, it is not an official offshoot. Heidi Klum (who has been heavily criticized for this), Bill Kaulitz and Conchita Wurst will host and jury . The first season has aired since November 14, 2019.

Awards

During the 21st GLAAD Media Awards , RuPaul's Drag Race won a GLAAD Media Award in the Outstanding Reality Program category . In 2016 and 2017, RuPaul was awarded the Emmy in the category Best Reality TV Presenter for the show . In 2018, the show was awarded both the Emmy for Outstanding Reality-Competition Program and for Outstanding Host for a Reality or Reality-Competition Program .
