Champion is the fourth official studio album by dance music singer and drag queen RuPaul , released on iTunes on February 24, 2009 . It contains a mix of house , pop, club / dance and R&B songs.

background

Emergence

RuPaul recorded the entire album in the bedroom of album producer Lucian Piane. The closet served them as a recording studio. The collaboration came about through World Of Wonder , the production company of RuPaul's Drag Race . They should produce the theme song for the show together. In addition to the title song, this resulted in the eleven other songs on the album. Work on the album was completed on February 10, 2009 and it was released on iTunes on February 24.

RuPaul describes the album as his best. The theme of this album, according to RuPaul, is “Don't belittle yourself and recognize your own strength. Everyone has to discover the champion that is in them. ”Actually, the album was supposed to be Faster! Faster! because the initial concept was momentum and speed, but as the project evolved, perseverance became the key issue. The album shares the philosophy that there are more ways to be a winner than to get there first.

RuPaul was inspired by the candidates for RuPaul's Drag Race for two songs . The song Never Go Home Again is based on a story by candidate Akashia, who was kicked out of her parents' home after she came out as gay. The song LadyBoy is based on the candidate Ongina, who comes from the Philippines.

The bonus song Throw Ya Hands Up is a duet by RuPaul and Lady Bunny . It is their first duet together, although they had worked together years before on RuPaul's single I've Got That Feelin ' for Cardiac Records. The song was originally intended for the soundtrack of Another Gay Sequel , but it ended up not being used in the film. Since RuPaul thought the song was too good, he decided to add it to the album as a bonus.

In addition to pure party songs, the themes of the album primarily appeal to a gay audience. Here RuPaul puts more emphasis than in his previous albums.

Videos

Cover girl

On January 5, 2009 RuPaul published a promo video for the first single Cover Girl on his Myspace profile and on his blog as a world premiere. In addition to the song, the video contains the first scenes from RuPaul's Drag Race , a reality format similar to America's Next Top Model , which was broadcast on Logo . RuPaul sees Cover Girl as a return to 1990s house music. "I know what the audience wants from me - and I'll let them get it." The single was released on February 11, 2009 as a download on iTunes. On February 17, 2009, the music video for Cover Girl was released . In addition to RuPaul, the music video shows the album producer Lucian Piane and the pit crew from RuPaul's Drag Race . A second version of the music video, which contains additional scenes with the three finalists from RuPaul's Drag Race and a rap part by the winner Bebe Zahara Benet, was released in early April 2009.

Jealous of My Boogie

On March 17, 2009, a video for the second single Jealous of My Boogie was released as a promo for the album . For the video, RuPaul was inspired by the techno mash-up videos that are currently popular in Japan and that were posted on the sex-oriented weblog Fleshbot. These videos combine old Billy Herrington gay porn scenes with crazy Japanese graphics. An occasional baby head is used to cover some things. More than 3,000 mash-up parodies have since been made by teenagers about Herrington due to the internet phenomenon. The RuPaul video used porn scenes from Tommy Gunn by editor Justin Hurvitz. These were combined with scenes by RuPaul and some graphics. The baby head represents RuPaul as a drag baby.

RuPaul explains the song as follows: “A lot of people in our culture find drag queens to be something they are not so proud of. The song says, don't be jealous of my boogie, it says live your own life and don't blame drag for gays who don't want to be taken seriously. Don't take me seriously You can take me as you want, just not seriously! "

On May 11th, 2009 the music video for Jealous of My Boogie was released in which the drag queen Chi Chi LaRue played the leading role.

Devil Made Me Do It

On March 30, 2009, RuPaul shot the video for Devil Made Me Do It . The directors were Mathu Andersen and Andrew Schneider. It is the first video in which RuPaul appears as a man and as a drag queen. RuPaul's style of clothing as a man was inspired by Robert Mitchum in The Hunter's Night . The drag queen RuPaul plays the devil in the video and looks like Janet Jackson . The video celebrated its world premiere on December 2, 2009 at the Ultra Fabulous: Beyond Drag Festival , where short films for the transsexual scene are presented. The video's internet premiere took place on December 8, 2009.

Tranny chaser

On March 21, 2009, RuPaul filmed the video for Tranny Chaser . Tranny Chaser is a fun hip-hop song about the sexual confusion of straight men whose prey is transsexual women. The video celebrated its Internet premiere on December 21, 2009 on YouTube . In the song RuPaul expresses his admiration for Patti LaBelle (on the line Alright Patti LaBelle, here's something else for you ) and Whoopi Goldberg (on the line Looky-loo, Whoopie gotta boo boo ).

Lady boy

The music video for Lady Boy was shot on November 14, 2009 with RuPaul's Drag Race candidate Ongina.

Meanings of the songs

The main event song is about taking responsibility for navigating human emotions and dancing away the dejection through a healthy, proactive form of denial.

The song Let's Turn The Night is about solidarity and believing in the power of love that enables a better future. It was written by RuPaul and Piane when the protests against Proposition 8 - an amendment to the constitution that only recognizes marriage between men and women in California - were peaking in West Hollywood.
