America's Next Top Model , often abbreviated as ANTM and Top Model within the program , is an American reality show and the origin of the Next Top Model idea, in which women compete against each other for the title America's Next Top Model and a jump-start in the modeling industry . In Germany and Austria , the show is advertised with the spelling America's Next Top Model .
The show was created by former supermodel Tyra Banks . Banks is the main judge on the jury and executive producer alongside Ken Mok and Anthony Dominici . The seasons of the show will be officially called "Cycles", ie cycles referred. The first cycle premiered on May 20, 2003 on the US TV station UPN and quickly became one of the most watched programs on the network. The show has been broadcast on The CW since the seventh season and has also achieved maximum ratings there. The first theme music was sung by Tyra Banks and produced by Rodney "Darkchild" Jerkins . The 17th season was also referred to as the "All-Star Edition", since all candidates have already started in previous seasons and were given a second chance. The 18th season was subtitled "British Invasion" because here, in addition to seven American girls, seven British girls who had participated in different seasons of Britain's Next Top Model got the chance to become top models. The 19th season started with the subtitle "College Edition" on August 24, 2012. The 20th season has the subtitle "Guys & Girls", with both women and men competing for the first time. The season began on August 2, 2013.
For the German television broadcast , the original sound was overlaid with a voice-over . The first season started on January 9, 2007 on the German music broadcaster VIVA and was broadcast on Tuesdays at 9 p.m. until February 27. The second season began on January 7, 2008 on the new slot on Monday. On July 7th, 2008, the third season continued on Mondays at 9 p.m. on VIVA. Season four began on October 27, 2008 and ran Mondays 10 p.m. to 11 p.m. on VIVA. For the broadcast of the fifth season, which started on July 13, 2009, a voice-over was dispensed with and a version with subtitles was adopted instead. In the sixth season, however, a voice-over was used again for the broadcast, which began on April 12, 2010 on VIVA. From October 11, 2010, the station continued to show the seventh season on Monday evening. With the restructuring of VIVA's programming - since January 1, 2011 - the time slot changed to Friday at 10:15 p.m. The eighth season was first broadcast in Germany on January 14, 2011.
On October 14, 2015, Tyra Banks announced through Twitter that season 22 would be the last. The last episode aired on December 4, 2015. However, VH1 secured the rights to reboot a short time later . The 23rd season went on air on December 12, 2016 with some changes to the format and a completely new jury. Banks, who was still involved as a producer for the 23rd season, decided to take over the moderation again in the preparations for the 24th season.
The show
Each season of America's Next Top Model has nine to thirteen episodes and starts with ten to fourteen candidates. One candidate has to leave the series every week. The decision is made by majority vote in the jury. In the episode The Girl Who Pushes Tyra over the Edge from season four, she decided to send two of them home due to the lack of motivation and performance of all participants. Since season 13, two of the last four candidates have been eliminated in the last episode before the final, so the focus in the final is on the best two. During the fifth season, contestant Cassandra Whitehead voluntarily left the show, which is why no contestant was eliminated four weeks later in the episode The Girl Whose Boyfriend Is Cheating on Her . In the ninth season episode The Girl Who Gets a Mango , Ebony Morgan decided to leave the show, which saved her fellow actor Ambreal Williams from dropping out.
During the first episodes of a cycle, the candidates are given a new styling, the so-called "makeover". In this, the hair is primarily cut or colored. In the last third of the season, the remaining participants travel to a “fashion metropolis” in another country.
An episode of America's Next Top Model shows the events of a week. A “challenge”, photo shoots or a commercial shoot, a critical review of the candidates and their performance by the jury, especially Tyra Banks, and the expulsion of a participant are part of every episode. Since the tenth cycle, the jury has consisted of Banks, the fashion photographer Nigel Barker, the catwalk trainer Jay Alexander and the Czech supermodel Paulina Porizkova . Previous members of the jury included the fashion icon Twiggy , supermodel Janice Dickinson , fashion stylist Nolé Marin, designer Kimora Lee Simmons and fashion editors Beau Quillian and Eric Nicholson. Photo director Jay Manuel is not a member of the jury, but has been in charge of the photo shoots as "Photo Shoot Director" since the first season. In each episode, the jury is attended by a different guest judge, mostly a distinguished personality from the fashion industry. The individual episodes are usually assigned to a topic in the fashion world, such as dealing with the press, promoting an advertising product, appearing at a fashion show or behavior on go-see sites .
At the beginning of a new episode, the candidates are trained on this week's topic. For example, a lesson in the application of make-up and make-up of the improvised or spectacle be given with respect to. A related this "Challenge", that task , follows such as a press conference or the appearance at a casting. The winner is determined by the "Challenge" manager and receives a prize such as a shopping voucher or advantageous treatment for the next photo shoot. Mostly she is asked to select a number of fellow campaigners who are allowed to participate in the prize.
This is followed by photos and the performance of the candidates has a significant influence on the final assessment. Recurring themes for the recordings are underwear or bikini themes, posing with a male model and posing with one or more animals. Except for the fourth cycle, a photo session was replaced by a commercial in each season. In the first season the aim was to advertise contact lenses from Fresh Look. The third season had a Japanese-language commercial for Campbell's Soup . In season five, a deodorant commercial was shot by Secret . In the sixth, eighth and tenth cycle, a shoot for the cosmetic brand CoverGirl took place. Alternatively, the candidates were used in Cycles two and nine as actors in a music video by Tyra Banks and Enrique Iglesias .
The final element of a series is the assessment of the candidates. Before the individual assessment, the candidates are often asked to master a so-called “pre-evaluation task” in front of the jury. This requires, for example, spontaneous posing or the quick selection of an outfit that fits a certain topic. Then one candidate after the other is supposed to step forward to face criticism from the jurors; Among other things, this week's photo, the success in this week's “Challenge” and the “Pre-Evaluation Task” will be reviewed. After the evaluation of all candidates, the jurors confer. The model candidates are called back into the room and one after the other receives this week's photo. The candidate with the best performance is named first, the last two (“bottom two”, worst two ) are heavily criticized before only one of them is given a photo.
The course of the program deviates in part from the basic concept if there are only three candidates left. Except in the first and second season, when CoverGirl was not yet an advertiser for the show, and the third, the last three candidates were supposed to compete against each other with a final photo opportunity and a commercial shoot for CoverGirl cosmetics. This rotation forms the basis for the jury to decide which of the candidates should be sent home. The two finalists run at a fashion show in front of a large audience and the jury. The latter decides in retrospect who has made the greatest development progress and who has the better chance of a career as a model.
criticism
The fashion magazine Allure already criticized in October 2006 that the show had ultimately not produced a supermodel.
Ken Mok and Tyra Banks noticed the heavy smoke in season eight. Mok said he was aware of the show's impact on young viewers. In the next, ninth cycle, the candidates were banned from smoking and the photo shoots dealt more and more with health and environmental issues.
After the end of the tenth season, the producers of the show received a lawsuit from Michael Marvisi, the owner of the model house for that season. The candidates and the production crew are said to have caused damage of around 500,000 US dollars . In addition to leftover food, holes were also found in the walls; Water and electronics damage amounting to $ 90,000 were also caused. The production team damaged the ceilings in order to install spotlights and cameras.
19-year-old 2010 season 15 winner Ann Ward is only 45 kg with a height of 1.88 meters. This corresponds to a body mass index (BMI) of 12.7. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) classification, a BMI under 16 is classified as severely underweight . This value is considered very health-wise and Ann Ward appears anorexic in photos . In some episodes Ward was seen preparing very greasy dishes, e.g. B. Fried oreo cookies . Despite ongoing violent protests in the run-up, Ann was declared the winner.

synchronization
For the show America's Next Top Model , a voice-over synchronization was chosen, in which the original sound can be heard, but the German version spoken on it is more dominant and strongly asynchronous . The German version is produced by the Berlin company bikini studios; the translations are by Heather De Lisle .
