Next top model

Next Top Model or Top Model is an international term for casting shows based on the format of America's Next Top Model .

Creation and development of the show concept

There were casting shows in other forms before. Heidi Klum , the current presenter of the German edition, was discovered through a comparable competition ( Model '92 ). The idea for the Next Top Model format came from Tyra Banks , which first went on air in 2003 with a corresponding season. Over 100 glocalized adaptations are now assigned to this show format worldwide, followed by several clone formats based on the same basic idea.

concept

Season

The goal of each season is to make it easier for a young woman to enter the fashion industry as a model . The season winner receives a material or cash prize, a cover shoot for a well-known fashion magazine and an initially limited model contract with a renowned agency . Men have been able to participate in the USA since 2013, and this has also been possible in Austria since 2014.

The “next top model” is determined by a competition lasting several weeks. Depending on the country, there are 10 to 25 finalists per season who compete in weekly “challenges” for modeling jobs, gifts and the overall victory.

In each season there is at least one stay abroad so that the participants can also gain international experience. Depending on the country, the duration and location of the stay differs, but mostly it goes to well-known fashion capitals such as Paris , London , Milan or New York .

A season is shot each year, which can run for several months depending on the number of participants.

The individual consequences

The broadcast duration of an episode is one to two hours and describes the experiences of a week. At the end of the week there is a photo shoot for all participants, which has a certain motto (for example: "Color in the face") and is staged by a nationally or internationally known photographer. The participant, who, in the opinion of the jury, appears to be the least suitable for a successful modeling career, will not receive another picture for her photo portfolio and will have to be removed from the show.

Moderation

The show is moderated by the chairman of the jury, which is usually one of the country's top international models. Many of the programs are hosted by one of the so-called supermodels of the 1990s.

jury

The jury usually consists of three to four people, most of whom come from the advertising and fashion industries. Often there are also guest jurors who accompany the developments of the participants for a week.

Individual features of the national shows

• Austria's Next Top Model : The presenter of the show, Lena Gercke , was the winner of the first edition of Germany's Next Top Model .
• Benelux 'Next Top Model : Replaced the show Holland's Next Top Model for two seasons starting in 2009 . The candidates come from the Netherlands and Belgium.
• Scandinavia's Next Top Model : In the Scandinavian region there was a joint show for the first three seasons, from which a winner emerged for each of the three participating countries, who then fought for the overall victory with her opponents. Then the concept dissolved into national shows in each country.
• Britain & Ireland's Next Top Model : Ireland has been part of the United Kingdom edition since season seven.
• Asia's Next Top Model : Is a spin-off in which models from all over Asia compete for the title.
• Rwanda's Next Top Model : Mixed “Guys & Girls” show.

Effect of the broadcast

Younger girls in particular are fans of these programs. Hundreds to thousands of girls register for the auditions every year. As a study by the International Central Institute for Youth and Educational Television shows, the participants serve as role models for this target group. The shows convey to their audiences that if you work hard enough, any dream can come true. The young people surveyed like to see Germany's Next Top Model "because the program also shows exciting cities, towns and locations".

criticism

A frequent point of criticism worldwide is that the participants have to sign so-called "gag contracts" that bind them to the production companies of the shows for years and that they have to cede a relatively high percentage of their income. This proportion is too high, criticized the Association of Licensed Model Agencies , especially in Germany . Its managing director told the press that the dreams of young girls are being treated irresponsibly.

Another frequently cited point of criticism is that one suggests a dream world to the audience that does not exist: Not every model gets top salaries, and there are phases for many models in which they are not booked for new jobs, even though they are with several customers imagined.
