Sara Nuru (born August 19, 1989 in Erding ) is a German model and an entrepreneur. She became known to a wide audience as the winner of the fourth season of the casting show Germany’s Next Topmodel , which was broadcast from February to May 2009 by the TV station ProSieben . She has been the ambassador for sustainable development of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development since 2018 .

Life

Sara Nuru was born as the third child of Ethiopian immigrants who emigrated from their homeland to southern Germany in 1986 and settled in Grünbach ( Bockhorn ) near Erding in Upper Bavaria . According to her own statements, she was the first black child born in the Erdinger hospital. The family lived in Erding until 1999, then they moved to Munich . Nuru grew up there with three sisters. In addition to German, Arabic and English, she also speaks a little Amharic .

Before participating in Germany's Next Top Model , Nuru had already gained experience as a model. At the age of 15, she was approached by a photographer in the pedestrian zone, which was followed by photo shoots. In 2008, she began running fashion shows for fashion design students she was friends with and appeared on a catwalk in Dresden, among others with last year's winner Jennifer Hof .

Nuru lives in Berlin and Zurich .

Germany's Next Topmodel

Sara Nuru was persuaded by her boyfriend to visit Germany's Next Top Model casting in Munich. Nuru was then one of a total of 30 selected applicants, whose number decreased to three finalists in the following 14 programs. In the course of the weekly television show, which took the participants to New York City , Los Angeles , Las Vegas , Honolulu and Singapore , among others , she secured advertising campaigns with Gillette .

In the finale of the fourth season, which took place on May 21, 2009 in Cologne's Lanxess Arena as a live show in front of 15,000 guests, the jury around presenter Heidi Klum , model agent Peyman Amin and casting agent Rolf Scheider chose Nuru as the first black winner of the casting show. She relegated the 18-year-old student Mandy Bork from Witten and the 20-year-old model Marie Nasemann from Gauting to places two and three. The 19-year-old was on the cover of the August issue of the German lifestyle - magazine Cosmopolitan to see and was the face of the new campaign of Düsseldorf clothing company C & A and the cosmetics company Maybelline Jade. She shot a commercial for the fast food chain McDonald’s with Heidi Klum and the other two finalists.

From 2009 Nuru ran on shows in London , Milan and New York City and at Berlin Fashion Week . The designers and fashion labels she works for include Laurèl, Guido Maria Kretschmer , Gant, Cesar Galindo NY, Custo Barcelona and Roberto Cavalli . She was featured in advertising campaigns for Reebok , C&A, Dallmayr , Lufthansa , Maybelline Jade and Lascana, for example.

Sara Nuru slipped into the Scheherazade costume for the Life Ball 2013 . As part of the globally broadcast show, she ran for Roberto Cavalli's couture show .

In addition to her work as a model, Nuru often moderates. So she reported live from the red carpet of the Oscar awards and from two Germany's Next Topmodel finals and is booked as a presenter for events and galas.

Together with Uwe Krist, Nuru traveled to major European cities and reported on travel tips and cultural highlights in the REISEfieber magazine on Sat.1 breakfast television . She has also gained some experience as an actress. She had a supporting role in the German comedy Otto's Eleven and a guest appearance in the television series Die Dreisten Drei . In autumn 2011 she was seen in the image campaign Sag's in German together with well-known faces such as RTL presenter Nazan Eckes and boxer Wladimir Klitschko .

She is involved with Karlheinz Böhm's foundation Menschen für Menschen as an ambassador for the Generation ABC-2015 campaign .

In 2016 Nuru founded the company "nuruCoffee" together with her sister Sali. The company sells coffee from Ethiopia and, through its association nuruWomen, supports Ethiopian women with microcredits as a start-up aid for a business model.
According to Nuru, the key experience for changing priorities in her life was a test for a private broadcaster: she was asked to evaluate a luxury ice cream adorned with gold leaf at a price of 1,000 dollars.

Nuru has been the ambassador for sustainable development at the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development since 2018 .
