Priekulė (Eng. (Noble) Prökuls ; Curish Prekule ) is a small town and the center of the rural office of the same name in the district of Klaipėda in the Lithuanian region of Lesser Lithuania , formerly Prussian Lithuania . The place is about 20 kilometers south of Klaipėda (Memel) on the Minge .
Surname
The name Prökul is derived from Curio-Latvian “preks”: price; "Prece": goods (cf. Prussian-Lithuanian "prekius": offer, haggle). The Curonian ending -ul is a diminutive, which indicates that it is a rather insignificant trading center.
history
The place was originally called Paminia (on the Minia / Minge). In 1511 a jug "zur Minnige" is documented. Jugs were erected at transport hubs and were essentially trading venues. In 1540 a Lukas Preckol was the operator of the pitcher. In 1587 a church was built, the first known pastor of which was Caspar Radunius. Prökuls has been a parish since 1628 , but had to cede individual villages to other parishes. The population was Evangelical-Lutheran, the Catholics belonged to the Memel parish. A teacher was hired as early as 1594. In 1905 the village had around 500 inhabitants, very few of them ethnic Germans, in 1925 there were around 1,100 inhabitants.
