The Bread & Butter (abbreviated B&B) is an international public event all about fashion and music . The "Festival of Style and Culture" takes place once a year in Berlin and is the further development of the Bread & Butter trade fair , which was set up by the German entrepreneur Karl-Heinz Müller and celebrated its premiere in July 2001 in Cologne . It took place twice a year until 2015, since 2003 as part of Berlin Fashion Week and was considered the world's leading trade fair for everyday clothing, so-called prêt-à-porter fashion. After being bought by the online platform Zalando in 2015, it was opened as Bread & Butter by Zalando as a fashion festival for a wide audience.

The Bread & Butter was founded in 2001 by Karl-Heinz Müller, Kristyan Geyr and Wolfgang Ahlers. The first three events took place in the "angular rotunda", an empty industrial building on the factory premises of Klöckner-Humboldt-Deutz AG in Cologne-Deutz . From 2003 to 2007 the fair moved from Cologne to Berlin-Spandau (locations in the former industrial area Gartenfeld ), from 2005 with an offshoot to the historical exhibition center Fira Barcelona Montjuic on Placa España in Barcelona . In 2007 Bread & Butter moved all the way to Barcelona, ​​where it last took place in early 2009 and attracted around 80,000 trade visitors . From summer 2009 the exhibition took place again in Berlin, now in the reception and hangars of the disused Tempelhof Airport .

In January 2010 it was divided into the sections Sport & Street, Street Fashion, Fashion Now, Denim Base, Style Society, Urban Superior Men / Women and LOCK and attracted around 100,000 trade visitors.

For the 2014 summer fair, Müller had planned to give the B&B a boost by opening it for a wide audience for two days. Large brand groups such as Adidas said goodbye to the fair because they are instead focusing more on flagship stores in city centers and shopping centers. The calculated expansion into a trading platform could also have stood up to Internet trading. The exhibitors, however, refused to accept this new concept, so that Müller had to row back.

Instead, Müller announced at the opening event on July 8, 2014 that an international expansion was planned for 2015. The winter fair will take place in Barcelona in the Palau Nacional. In addition, a third exhibition location will be inaugurated in Seoul in September 2015 . A corresponding contract was signed on May 2, 2014 with the mayor of the South Korean capital. A seven-minute film International Season Kick-off presented the new agenda. Müller thus came into conflict with the Berlin Senate, as the existing contract with the state-owned Berlin property management company still provided for a trade fair in Tempelhof for January 2015.

Trade visitors do not pay admission. Buyers / resellers can participate in the fair by invitation or with legitimation.

On December 9, 2014, the cancellation of the trade fair planned for January 2015 was announced. On December 17th, management was forced to file for bankruptcy. Instead of the indoor fair, a street fair took place in Berlin-Mitte in January 2015 , at which around 40 brands were present. In the secret agreement between Bread & Butter and the Senate Wowereit III regarding Tempelhof, there was an exit clause in favor of Berlin, which was not used.

In June 2015, Zalando's board of directors , David Schneider, announced that the Berlin online platform for fashion was taking over the trade fair. In the following year Bread & Butter by Zalando was established as a fashion festival. The premiere under the motto “NOW” took place from September 2nd to 4th, 2016 on the grounds of the Arena Berlin and attracted over 25 brands and more than 20,000 visitors. Among others, Gigi Hadid and A $ AP Rocky were there .

From September 1st to 3rd, 2017 the event took place under the motto “BOLD” again on the grounds of the Arena Berlin. Trends from the areas of fashion, music and food were presented. Fashion shows from labels such as Topshop , Hugo Boss and Viktor & Rolf, talks with Vivienne Westwood , Adwoa Aboah and Wyclef Jean , more than 40 fashion labels such as adidas , Bik Bok, Hilfiger Denim or NIKE , international DJs and live acts such as Bilderbuch , Yung Hurn and RIN.

Political argument about airport use

The Berlin real estate management concluded in 2009 a lease with Bread & Butter for the use of Tempelhof Airport over ten years. Thereupon the parliamentary group of the CDU Berlin demanded a termination of the contract because permanent use of the site would be blocked by the event, which takes place only twice a year. The FDP and the Greens joined this demand. The contract was kept secret with reference to Bread & Butter's trade secrets. The MP Florian Graf then intended to file a lawsuit for inspection of the contract. However, the Senator for Finance Ulrich Nussbaum allowed the MP to inspect before the lawsuit came. Details from the contract are still subject to confidentiality.
