history

Founding years

The band was founded in early 2005 by Maurice Ernst (vocals, guitar), Peter Horazdovsky (bass), Andreas Födinger (drums) and Klemens Kranawetter (guitar) in Kremsmünster . At the time, the band members were between 14 and 15 years old. In the following two years, songs such as Kopf Ab and Disco ball were created , with which Bilderbuch gained increasing popularity. At the end of 2007 Zebo Adam and Manfred Franzmeier (then both members of the band Russkaja ) became aware of the group and began working with them on their debut album in 2008. In the autumn of the same year the guitarist Klemens Kranawetter was replaced by Michael Krammer due to personal differences .

First successes with indie rock

In summer 2009 the debut album Nelken & Schillinge was released on the indie label " Schoenwetter Schallplatten ". The single Calypso entered the Austrian Indie Charts at number 4 and is also on the FM4 Soundselection 21. This was followed by regular airplay on the Austrian youth radio station FM4, as well as national and international appearances ( Frequency , Two Days a Week, etc.). The Musikexpress wrote about Nelken & Schillinge : “An album between rock theater, drug rock and Dadaism”. Visions said: "Driving, not too bitchy, recognizable and suitable for the dance floor". In the summer of 2010, Bilderbuch released the request, Herr Märtyrer EP with remixes by Nelken & Schillinge . Participating artists were u. a. I Heart Sharks , Dirty Disco Youth and AG Trio.

The single Caribbean Dreams was released in January 2011. The video for the single was made by director Antonin B. Pevny , who u. a. has already worked with Moby , filmed in the Austrian Alps. It served as inspiration for the music video for Up and Away by Casper , on his “Hinterland Tour 2014” picture book next to Portugal. The Man in the opening act occurred. The concept album Die Pest im Piemont was released on March 18, 2011 ( Schoenwetter Schallplatten / Ink Music ) and Bilderbuch again earned positive reviews. Karl Fluch from Der Standard described Bilderbuch as “one of the most exciting new bands in Austria”. Der Falter wrote about the album Die Pest im Piemont : "It exists in a small art world of its own and convinces with lyrics between slogans and poetry, which some discourse rockers are not granted in long careers". Festival appearances followed ( Dockville , Popkomm , Obstwiesenfestival, etc.) and a major tour through Austria, Germany and Switzerland. In November 2012, the drummer Andreas Födinger left the band.

Change of style and breakthrough

At the beginning of 2013, hip-hop and R&B drummer Philipp Scheibl joined the band. In June 2013 the single Plansch (from the EP Feinste Silk ) was released, which entered the FM4 charts. Noisey / Music by VICE wrote after the release of Plansch : “Maurice, Peter, Mike and Pille are casualness in person. Picture books are probably the only ones besides Kanye West who can use Autotune without sounding absolutely crappy - and in German too ”. The ZIB 24 described the single as the "alternative summer hit of the year".

In October 2013 the second single Maschin was released on the band's newly founded label "Maschin Records". Maschin triggered a wave of positive reactions. The features section of the Süddeutsche Zeitung praised: “... when pop is as good as it can rarely be: There are no words to describe it. This music is great because it is great. You have to hear that ”. The cultural broadcaster Austria 1 judged: “Picture books know what makes good pop music”. Flux FM said: "Maschin - one of the greatest hits in the German language". Because of his “excellent work with the moving image” (“superb work with the moving image”) the video for Maschin u. a. nominated at the “Miami International Film Festival” and was voted one of the world's top ten in the “Music Video” category. At the short film festival Vienna Independent Shorts in May 2014, the video was awarded as the best Austrian music video.

The single Maschin is also at the top of various best lists of 2013. Noisey / Music by VICE voted Maschin into the top 3 of their annual charts. In the Musikexpress , Maschin was the highest German-language title of the year. FM4 , Puls (the youth broadcaster of Bayerischer Rundfunk ) and tape.tv awarded Maschin first place in their annual charts. Spotify then put Bilderbuch on its “Spotlight on 2014” list, which includes the most promising acts for 2014. At the Amadeus Austrian Music Award 2014, Bilderbuch were nominated four times, more often than any other act. You won the audience award with the FM4 Award. Maschin was chosen in 2020 by the pop culture magazine The Gap as part of the AustroTOP rankings in second place of the “100 most important Austrian pop songs”.

The singles Spliff and OM were each released with a music video as a pre-release for the band's third album. For the video OM , Lina Simon (idea, concept & creative direction) was nominated for a Theodor König Award , which was first presented in 2015 in Berlin as part of the Echo (music prize), alongside the video managers from Deichkind and Die Fantastischen Vier . On February 27, 2015, Bilderbuch released the album Schick Schock . Since March 2015 the band toured with support Mavi Phoenix through Austria, Germany and Switzerland, before the four announced at their last concert as part of this tour on January 10, 2016 in the Graz Orpheum that they would take an artistic break.

For the Amadeus Austrian Music Award 2016 they were nominated in the categories of Band of the Year , Album of the Year , Live Act of the Year and the Genre Category Pop / Rock , for the FM4 Award and for the Recording Studio Prize. They were honored for the album of the year , they also received the recording studio award .

The piece Spliff is in the movie A Cure for Wellness by Gore Verbinski used. In September 2017, Spliff could also be heard at the presentation of the spring collection of the fashion label Versace as part of London Fashion Week. "A tune which she had become obsessed while watching A Cure for Wellness on Netflix," said Vogue magazine about how Donetalla discovered Versace Spliff .

Continued commercial success with Magic Life

The album Magic Life was released on February 17th, 2017 . The singles Sweetlove , I ♥ Stress , Tell your girls I'm back in town and bungalow have been released in advance until January 2017 .

The songs Maschin, Man has hurt me , head off and A boat for us were used as film music in the 2017 film Wilde Maus by Josef Hader . The song Bungalow was used in 2018 in the second episode of the German-Luxembourgish TV series Bad Banks . It sounds in a scene in a student club.

At the Amadeus Austrian Music Award 2017 , Bilderbuch was awarded in the categories Band of the Year and Live Act of the Year .

Digital change

From March to May 2018, Bilderbuch played their most extensive tour to date. The "Tour 5000" led with two dates in the entire German-speaking area through smaller clubs with a maximum capacity of 1500 people, the band changed the technical implementation of their music to a purely digital production method. Amplifier towers disappeared from the stage, drummer Philipp Scheibl played an e-drum set, the visual implementation took the form of a reduced laser show. Singer Maurice Ernst and guitarist Michael Krammer also changed their looks: Ernst had swapped his hydrogen-blonde short haircut for a brunette part, guitarist Michael Krammer shaved off his long hair and replaced it with hair tattoos.

“What does all of this have to do with music?” Wrote the city newspaper Falter on the occasion of the Vienna Tour 5000 event. “More than it seems at first glance: in a picture book, her art is about constant change, exploring boundaries Risk and a self-defined coolness, in which the ostensibly stupid turns into actually awesome. "

At the end of May 2018 the quartet released the first new song since “Magic Life” with “One Night in Manila”, and major festival appearances followed, including as co-headliners alongside the Gorillaz at Rock am Ring and Rock im Park.

On December 4, 2018, Bilderbuch surprisingly released the new album mea culpa , initially exclusively digital. It had been announced just days earlier on the band's social media channels. In addition, Bilderbuch announced a second new album for February 22, 2019, Vernissage My Heart . It should appear at the same time as the sound carrier version of the mea culpa .

Five days before the launch of Vernissage My Heart , Bilderbuch published the political song Europa 22 , and a fictitious EU passport was offered for download on the website www.bilderbucheuropa.love. It became a social media hit, was used hundreds of thousands of times within a few days and was even posted by German and Austrian politicians. Vernissage My Heart and mea culpa reached number one and two on the Austrian sales charts at the same time.

For the tour for the two new albums, the stage aesthetics changed fundamentally again: the digital stepped into the background in favor of the analog, the colorful Dadaist stage set looked more like a theater than a rock stage. For the tour, Bilderbuch was expanded into a quintet by the Viennese drummer and keyboardist Lukas König. In 2015 he had already taken on the rap part on the song "Softdrink" and accompanied Bilderbuch as a support act as part of their "Schick Schock" tour with his solo project Koenig

As the highlight of the 2019 tour, Bilderbuch played two large open-air concerts in front of Schönbrunn Palace in Vienna on May 24 and 25, 2019, which were attended by around 30,000 people.

In July 2019, Bilderbuch released the new song “Mr. Refrigerator ”, it was named“ Tune of the Week ”in the BBC One indie show by Jack Saunders. Another new single, “Kitsch”, followed in October, as well as the vinyl EP “Mr. Refrigerator ”, which was sold out on the day it was published.
