Alternative R&B (also hipster R&B , indie R&B , future R&B or PBR & B ) is a sub-genre of contemporary R&B that first gained great popularity in the late 2000s . Alternative R&B differentiates itself lyrically and compositionally from contemporary R&B through its more introverted and supposedly more sincere lyrics. Musically they experiment more and are influenced by electronic genres such as minimal , dubstep and rock . The musicians Frank Ocean , Kelela and The Weeknd are particularly associated with this term . They managed to get a lot of attention through mix tapes ahead of a major release.
