Kelela (born June 6, 1983 in Washington, DC , actually Kelela Mizanekristos ) is an American singer and songwriter who is successful in the genres of alternative R&B and electronic music .

Life

Kelela was born in Washington, DC to Ethiopian parents and grew up in Gaithersburg , Maryland . Her musical career began at American University , where she moved after graduating from Montgomery College . She started playing jazz standards in various cafes in her spare time . She also joined the progressive metal band Dizzy Spells. During this time she also began a liaison with metal guitarist Tosin Abasi ( Animals as Leaders ).

Then she moved to Los Angeles and sang as a guest on the song EFX from the album Tracer of Teengirl Fantasy . This is how Prince William got to know from the Fade to Mind label , who continued to support her from then on and introduced her to his label program, consisting of grime , house , R&B , techno , dubstep and hip-hop . After a guest post on Kingdoms Song Bank Head , which appeared on the compilation Saint Heron , edited by Solange Knowles , followed on October 1, 2013 her mixtape Cut 4 Me , which was released for free. The song Go All Night from this mixtape was also released on Saint Heron . Björk praised her for the album .

The video for the single A Message was released on March 3, 2015 . This was followed by her Extended Play Hallucinogen on October 9th .

Finally, on October 6, 2017, their debut album Take Me Apart was released on the Warp label . The highly praised album was among others in the annual best lists of Rolling Stone (Germany, place 10) and Spex (album of the year). In the United States, it reached number 128 on the Billboard 200 , number 51 in the British charts and number 80 in the Swiss charts.

Music genre

Kelela can be assigned to alternative R&B , avant-garde pop and trap . She is considered a favorite with critics and was able to convince music colleagues such as Gorillaz , Danny Brown , Arca and Björk with her first mixtape .
