Lil Peep (2016)

Lil Peep (real name Gustav Elijah Åhr , born November 1, 1996 in Allentown , Pennsylvania , † November 15, 2017 in Tucson , Arizona ) was an American rapper .

Life

Gustav Elijah Åhr was born in Allentown , Pennsylvania in 1996 . When he was four years old, his family moved to Long Beach in the state of New York , where he grew up. His mother, who works as a primary school teacher, has German and Irish roots; his father Karl Johann Ahr, a college - Professor , German and Swedish . He learned to play the trombone and tuba .

As he grew up, Åhr's father was mostly absent and his upbringing was “apathetic and drug addict”, with his father and mother formally divorcing when he was 14 years old. Shortly thereafter, he separated from his then girlfriend Emma Rosa. He attended Lindell Elementary School and then Long Beach High School in Lido Beach, New York , where despite infrequent attendance, he got good grades and was on the dean's list for the time he was in attendance. He later dropped out of high school and accepted took online courses to get his diploma . Shortly thereafter, he began publishing his music on YouTube and SoundCloud .

His brother brought him into the punk scene through bands like The Casualties , Minor Threat and NOFX . After Åhr left Long Beach High School without a degree, he did so through online courses. Shortly after, he moved to Los Angeles in 2013 to begin his rapper career.

Shortly before his death, he was in a relationship with Arzaylea Rodriguez for about two months, before he had a brief relationship with the actress Bella Thorne . After Ahr's death, she tweeted, "Peep, you deserve more from life. Life didn't live up to your size." He described himself as bisexual in August 2017 .

He died on November 15, 2017, shortly before a scheduled concert in Tucson , Arizona , after being hospitalized for drug abuse poisoning. It was reported that shortly before his previous concert in El Paso , Texas, he unknowingly took a combination of the sedative alprazolam (Xanax) and the pain reliever fentanyl . Seven tablets of alprazolam alone were an average dose for the rapper, but the combination of the two active ingredients led to cardiac arrest. The autopsy report stated that in addition to fentanyl and alprazolam, residues of cocaine , marijuana and the opioid pain relievers tramadol , oxycodone , oxymorphone , hydromorphone and hydrocodone were found in Åhr's body . No alcohol could be detected.

In the same year the EP Feelz was released as well as another mixtape with Live Forever . In 2016 , two more mixtapes were released with Crybaby in June and Hellboy in September. Lil Peep published his first songs on Soundcloud and YouTube , which allowed him to gain a certain degree of popularity. His songs got millions of clicks on YouTube. The most clicked video is the Save That Shit music video , which has been viewed over 300 million times.

In May 2017 Lil Peep was accused by the emoband Mineral of illegally using samples of LoveLetterTypewriter from the 1998 album EndSerenading in the song Hollywood Dreaming . In response to the allegations, Lil Peep replied that by using the sample he wanted to show his affection for Mineral's music. In June 2017, his debut album Come Over When You're Sober, Pt. 1 , which was created in collaboration with Grammy- winning producer Rob Cavallo , was announced for August 11th of the same year. To promote the album, Lil Peep announced an extended tour that would take place between August 2nd and November 17th, 2017. His only album entered the German, British and US album charts after the rapper's death. On November 9, 2018, the follow-up Come Over When You're Sober, Pt. 2 . On January 31, 2019, the first single with ILoveMakonnen from the upcoming collaboration album titled I've Been Waiting and Fall Out Boy was released. The song was originally a demo by ILoveMakonnen and Peep, which was then played on and created a partnership that resulted in up to twenty songs. Fall Out Boy was added to the song after Peep's death. When the album will be released is not yet known.

On June 10, 2020, on the occasion of the four-year anniversary, a re-release of the mixtape Crybaby was released posthumously . For the first time, it was also released on various streaming platforms.

Lil Peep was part of the Gothboiclique collective founded by former Tigers Jaw musician Adam McIlwee and a former member of Schemaposse .

music

Lil Peep has been called " SoundCloud referred -Rapper" whose music as Lo-fi -Rap and Emo - Trap described. His music can also be described as emotional lo-fi indie post rap . The New York Times described the rapper as " Kurt Cobain of the lo-fi rap" and described his music as dark to diabolically melodic. His music picked up on both Southern US rap and the anxious introspection of post-hardcore . Steven J. Horovitz from the online platform of Pitchfork Media magazine called it the "future of emo."

In his texts he dealt with the topics of suicide , past love affairs and drug use . Musical influences were Gucci Mane , Riff Raff , Seshollowaterboyz , Crystal Castles , Rozz Dyliams , My Chemical Romance , the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Panic! called at the disco . In his music he used samples from various rock bands, including Brand New , Underoath , Radiohead , Avenged Sevenfold , Slayer , The Postal Service , Oasis and The Microphones .

Compared to other rappers, Lil Peep was less distinguished by his speaking singing skills than by his post-punk and indie rock- oriented singing style. Only in some places did he incorporate rap verses into his songs.

Concerts

Before his death he performed in different countries, in America, Germany, Russia, Canada, France, Belgium and Holland. His biggest concerts were in Toronto and Moscow.

Fashion

Lil Peep was interested in fashion since he was a teenager. During the last months of his life he modeled for Vlone and was invited to various fashion shows , such as the Balmain Men's Show during Paris Fashion Week or the Moncler Gamme Bleu MFW Mens Spring Summer Show in Milan . Nico Amarca of Hype Beast says "although Peep and his appearance a much smaller niche responsive than most modern artists wore them a large part of his success. At a time when real individuality is becoming more and more unusual, Peep was the panicked, fully tattooed lunatic that the creative world needed to break through its ever-increasing homogeneity. ”Rapper Playboi Carti describes Lil Peep as a“ trendsetter ”.

At the end of 2018 it was announced that Lil Peep had been working on a clothing brand before his death, which will appear under the name “No Smoking” (written “NO SMOK! NG”).
