Riff Raff (actually Horst Christian Simco , born January 29, 1982 in Houston , Texas ) is an American rapper . His debut album Neon Icon was released in 2014 via Mad Decent . Another Simco pseudonym is Jody HiGHROLLER .
Simco was a member of the short-lived hip-hop combo Three Loco with Dirt Nasty and Andy Milonakis and released the EP ¡Three Loco! With them in November 2012 . . He also played the role of Jamie Franko in the television series Love, Lies, Passion and had a voice actor role in an episode of the action series Major Lazer .
Life
Horst Christian Simco was born on January 29, 1982 in Houston , Texas, the second of four children to Anita Simco, a housewife, and Ronald Simco , a Vietnam War veteran. His mother, who grew up in Ohio , comes from a family of Lithuanian and German Jews , some of whom survived the Holocaust . His father Ronald suffered post-traumatic stress disorder as a result of his service in the Vietnam War . Simco spent his early childhood with his family in Copperfield , a suburb of Houston. They later moved near Stone Creek .
As a child he developed an interest in basketball at an early age . He attended Langham Creek High School , where he played as a shooting guard on the high school basketball team through senior year . He passed his GED shortly after being kicked out of the basketball team .
His parents divorced in the early 2000s after his father developed oropharyngeal cancer . While his father moved to Minnesota , his mother stayed in Houston. In 2001, Simco enrolled in Hibbing Community College in Hibbing , Minnesota, where he played on the college basketball team and studied the arts for a month. However, he left college in 2003 and moved back to Houston, where he painted cars for some time. He now lives in Los Angeles , California .
On August 11, 2013, he was arrested in North Carolina , North Carolina after police officers found marijuana , alcohol, and some unidentified illegal narcotics in his car. He was arrested and released without bail the same evening . Only a month before, he had the producers of the film Spring Breakers to 10 million US dollars sued because he accused them of having used his life without consent as a template for the biography of the protagonists. However, LA Weekly research found no judicial documents relating to the trial.
Career
2008–2009: The beginnings
Simco began his first attempts as a rapper back in 2005. He recorded his own tapes at home, on which he performed texts he had written to the beats of other rappers. He tried to sell these in shopping malls in Houston . In 2008 he started using social networks like MySpace , YouTube and WorldStarHipHop to bring his music to a wider audience. He was supported by a talent manager. In an interview with LA Weekly , he said that he was a very ambitious artist whose work ethic cannot be denied.
Rappers such as Swishahouse , Chamillionaire and Slim Thug were named as influences, and they themselves emerged on a musical level during this time. He tried to get into television through various auditions, including a video spot for peanut butter and an appearance on P. Diddy's program Making the Band , but all of them failed. In Atlanta , Georgia , he took part in an audition for the show From G's to Gents of the television station MTV in part and was added to the cast for the second season. Shortly thereafter, he had the station's logo tattooed on his neck and operated under his pseudonym MTV Riff Raff . Even if he was kicked out of the series in the second episode, he first made a name for himself through his extravagant appearance.
After this appearance, the comedian Simon Rex , who is also active as an actor and rapper , became aware of Simco after the producer The Alchemist showed him in a video. After Rex saw a freestyle video Riff Raffs, he got in touch with him and after some time founded the hip-hop combo Three Loco together with Andy Milonakis .
2010–2012: Mad Decent and various publications
In early 2011, Riff Raff was managed by Swishahouse co-founder OG Ron C and then moved to Los Angeles . Several music videos followed, which should further increase the rapper's awareness. Already in mid-2011 he came to the SOD Money Gang label of rapper Soulja Boy without having met him personally and without having signed a record deal. However, Riff Raff separated from the label after a year because he was neither advertised nor paid for by the record company.
Shortly before parting with SODMG Riff Raff cooperated with well-known music producers like Diplo and Harry Fraud and with Queens rapper Action Bronson , with which it to track a music video Bird on a Wire , which is viewed in a very short time, a million times and the Compact Music on Ranked # 27 for Best Music of 2012, it was released. In April 2012 he released a collab album with Diplo called Jody Highroller , on which Soulja Boy, Usher , Skrillex , Gucci Mane , Mystikal and Rusko can be heard as musical guests. This was followed by the release of the mixtape Summer of Surf , whereupon he signed with the Mad Decent label in June of the same year . Already under contract with Mad Decent, he released his first album The Golden Alien in July in his own production. The mixtapes Rap Game Bon Jovi and Birth of an Icon were also released as in-house productions. The latter was named “Mixtape of the Week” by Stereogum .
2013–2014: Label debut album Neon Icon
After the release of the mixtape Hologram Panda , Riff Raff told MTV that his label debut album would be called Riff Raff, The Neon Icon , although it would later be released as Neon Icon . As early as February 2013, the rapper said the album would be released in the third quarter of 2013.
On June 25, 2013, Dolce & Gabbana was the first track that was intended to be the album's first official single. However, it was later said that the song would not be on the album. Another stand-alone single, Mr. Popular, was released about three weeks later . A music video was released for Mr. Popular four days after it was released. In August 2013, it was said that Riff Raff was working with Action Bronson on a joint album called Galaxy Gladiators .
On November 23, 2013, the official release of How to Be the Man , the album's first single, followed. In an interview with the English-language magazine Rolling Stone , Riff Raff announced the release of four songs that had not made it on the album in order to shorten the waiting time for the album. These included the pieces Real Boyz with OJ da Juiceman as guest rapper, Suckas Askin 'Questions and Shoulda Won a Grammy with a feature by Action Bronson . In March 2014, Rolling Stone added the album to the 27 Must-Hear Albums of 2014 list . On May 20, 2014, Riff Raff announced Neon Icon for June 24, 2014 on Twitter after a long delay . On the same day, more information about the album was announced, including Slim Thug , Mike Posner , Childish Gambino and Mac Miller as guest musicians.
Since 2015: Peach Panther
On January 21st, 2015 Riff Raff was confirmed for the Warped Tour along with Our Last Night , Slaves , The Dirty Nil and Have Mercy . A few weeks after it became known, a petition from fans of the festival tour was started on change.org , in which Kevin Lyman was asked to remove Riff Raff from the festival cast and no longer hire rappers in the future. Riff Raff nevertheless completed the entire festival tour and was supported by musicians from the bands We Came as Romans and Beartooth .
On June 1st, 2015 Riff Raff announced that he wanted to release his third album Peach Panther . With Spazz Out , which was produced by Travis Barker , the first single on the album was even released around this time. However, the release of the album was postponed until 2016. Instead, he released an EP with Trench Coat Towers in November . At the beginning of 2016, the second single followed with Carlos Slim ; Peach Panther itself was officially released on June 24, 2016 - exactly two years after Neon Icon .
In April 2016, Riff Raff announced the partnership between Stampede Management and BMG with its own company, Neon Nation Corporation . This partnership generated $ 4 million to be invested in music and films to "build an entertainment empire."
In other media
Riff Raff made a guest appearance in the role of Double Cup , a codeine scientist , in the episode Double Cup of the series Major Lazer . He also has appeared in the MTV broadcasts From G's to Gents and 'n Wild Out . He made a guest appearance as art dealer Jamie Franko in the television series Love, Lies, Passion . The name is a reference to the actor James Franco , who starred in the film Spring Breakers . Riff Raff sued the movie's producers for damages in 2013 because he believed the main character's biography was based on his own and he hadn't allowed the makers to do so. In February of the previous year, producer Harmony Korine and Riff Raff were in contact. Riff Raff was to play the role in a future film, which later turned out to be Spring Breakers .
