Spring Breakers is a 2012 American film directed by Harmony Korine and starring Selena Gomez , Vanessa Hudgens , Ashley Benson and Rachel Korine . The film premiered at the 69th Venice International Film Festival on September 5, 2012.

action

Faith, Candy, Brit and Cotty have been best friends since elementary school. They go to college and live in the same dorm.

During the spring break the four want to travel to Florida to spend their vacation there. However, since they haven't saved enough money, they rob a diner in their college town. However, Faith does not take part and only finds out later where the money comes from. During the spring break, they are arrested for drug use. Since they have already spent their entire travel budget on alcohol, drugs and parties, they can not pay the bail set by the court . This is finally provided by the criminal alien who observed her in the courtroom. He brings them into his milieu and offers them a home. Faith doesn't feel comfortable in the environment and decides to go home. Cotty is next to leave after being shot in the arm by a member of a rival street gang. Only Brit and Candy remain and follow Alien into the gang war over the drug district against his former best friend Archie. The three of them storm Archie's property and shoot him and his followers. Alien dies in the process. The end of the film shows the two girls with an undetermined destination in Archie's Lamborghini and how they kiss the Alien again before.

production

Originally, Vanessa Hudgens , Selena Gomez , Rachel Korine (Harmony's wife) and Emma Roberts were to be cast in the lead roles . Roberts left production in early 2012 due to "creative differences" that could not be resolved. Ashley Benson took on her role .

The shooting took place in March and April of 2012 in and around St. Petersburg in the US state of Florida.

Around one month after the German premiere on February 19, 2013 in the CineStar Sony Center in Berlin , the film was shown in German cinemas on March 21. reception

Reviews

"A voyeuristic-vulgar, but furiously staged drama, at the same time exploitative-hedonistic manifesto and ambitious media criticism, whose forced amorality offends as much as it irritates."

“Of course you can never make any sense of spring breakers, and fine irony sensors may be too often where another audience thinks they are unfiltered. A certain mainstream calculation seems to be breaking through, also because the film is ultimately extremely prudish with all the shapely bare breasts when it comes to looking below the belt. "

- critic.de

“Spring Breakers has the urgent and immediate quality of an intensely experienced (alpine) dream: when the senses are raw and sensitive and all impressions spark unfiltered into archaic brain regions, dissolve into individual colors, tones, feelings. Whole scenes are looped, repeated, shifted and condensed, as if one were to dive straight into the depths of the teen popper unconscious. "

- Elena Meilicke : perlentaucher.de

“Spring Breakers is not a genre film. The wacky flick exists in its own world and will divide the cinema audience like no other in this cinema year. The combination of pop culture and independent filmmaking is an extremely successful mixture that finds a forgotten, bizarre beauty in the darkness of the film idea. The highlights are the main actors and the electrifying soundtrack! "

- Josephine Drews : Kino7.de

“While Harmony Korine's films have so far been rather bulky, Spring Breakers turns out to be a very catchy aesthetic intoxication, which conveys a good piece of zeitgeist with the right music, its 'neon chic' and the ambiguous, fragile narrative. The playful, low-budget remix of thriller, satire and half serious, half exaggerated coming-of-age drama is a real playground of pop culture, where hip hop and electro, the video game gangsters from Grand Theft Auto, Britney Spears and Give Scarface the handle: 'Just pretend it's a video game. Like you're in a fucking movie ', is a characteristic statement of the film, which at the same time dictates its reading. "

- Christian Horn : Filmrezension.de

"The sex-and-drug party film" Spring Breakers "by Harmony Korine makes a complicated, sick, hot heart beat under the rough armor of its readiness for unleashed noise, which dreams of strange freedoms."

- Dietmar Dath : FAZ

"There are excessive, exuberant, sometimes over-the-top films such as" Spring Breakers "."

- John Waters

With a production cost of $ 5 million, the film grossed approximately $ 11.1 million through March 30, 2013.

In 2016, Spring Breakers ranked 74th in a BBC poll of the 100 most important films of the 21st century .
