The Waves Vienna - Music Festival & Conference , now also Waves Central Europe is one since 2011 annually in Vienna and from 2013 to 2015 in parallel in Bratislava take-find music festival for pop music of Austrian and international musicians and bands mainly from areas of alternative - and independent - Music.

The Waves is designed as a club and showcase festival. From 2013 to 2015. simultaneously with Waves Vienna in the 55 km eastern from Vienna capital of Slovakia Waves Bratislava organized. The first Waves Vienna Filmfest also took place in 2013 .

In 2011 the festival was organized by Medienhaus Monopol, which also publishes the culture and music magazine The Gap . Comrades GmbH has been responsible for the festival since 2012. The media partner is the radio station FM4 .

Stages

The concerts of Waves Vienna took place in various bars and other rooms in the center of Vienna until 2015. In the first years from 2011 to 2013, the venues on and in the vicinity of the Danube Canal were mainly in the 2nd district , including in the cargo hold of the Badeschiff (2011-2013), which also served as an organizational center and meeting point in 2011, not far from it Clubschiff (2011–2013) and on the MS Schlögen (2012, 2013), in the music clubs Flex (2011–2014), Fluc (2011–2013) and Pratersauna (2011–2013), as well as on stages in Odeon (2012, 2013) ), Café Dogenhof (2011–2013), Projektraum Viktor Bucher (2011, 2013) and Charlie P's Pub (2013). In the opening year, a stage in a marquee in Vienna's Prater was also used, which could not be repeated due to complaints from residents about the volume. In 2014 and 2015, the venues were relocated from the 2nd to the 1st district and around Karlsplatz . The festival took place for the first time from September 28th to October 2nd, 2011. According to the “East meets West” approach, the focus was on the musical scene in Eastern Europe, especially Slovakia, as well as Canadian bands in cooperation with “Canadian Blast”. In addition to Austrian musicians, there were bands from Denmark, Germany, Great Britain, Iceland and the USA.

The festival opened with a concert by Soap & Skin (AT) in the Stadtsaal . The musician Erika M. Anderson (US), EMA for short, and the British band Gang of Four also performed on the first evening . The second edition of Waves Vienna took place from October 4th to 7th, 2012. This year's program focused on musicians from Poland and France. Around 90 concerts and numerous DJ sets could be visited on twelve stages. The festival opened in the Gartenbaukino , where the documentary Shut Up and Play the Hits was shown on an LCD sound system .

The third Waves Vienna took place from October 3rd to 6th, 2013. Slovenia and Belgium were represented as host countries . For the first time, the one-day Waves Bratislava was held in the Slovak capital, around 55 km east of Vienna, parallel to the Vienna Festival . Seven stages or clubs (Ateliér Babylon, Gorila.sk Urban Space, KC Dunaj, Nu Spirit Club, Poľský Inštitút Bratislava, Stará Tržnica and V-klub) were played on Saturday, October 5th. The Waves Vienna Filmfest was also new with the showing of five films in the Top Kino .

Opened with a concert by Australian Scott Matthew in the Konzerthaus , the 2014 festival took place from October 2nd to 5th on ten stages in Vienna, with the venues, unlike in previous years, where they were mainly in the area around the Danube Canal and in the 2nd . The 2015 festival took place from September 30th to October 4th. The performance and event locations were, as in the previous year, in the eastern part of the 1st district between the Danube Canal and Karlsplatz . According to the motto "East meets West", the country focus was dedicated to musicians from the Baltic states of Estonia , Latvia and Lithuania . As part of the Waves Vienna Film Festival , five films were shown in the city ​​cinema in the Künstlerhaus and in the KiP theater (basement of Café Prückel ). New to the Waves Vienna program was the literary series VIE 2015 ( Andreas Dorau & Dirk Stermann , Cornelia Travnicek , Jonas Engelmann , Maria Hofer , Martin Atkins , Stefanie Sargnagel ).

At the Waves Festival 2016 (September 28th to October 1st) there were some changes compared to previous years. The WUK cultural center on Währinger Strasse in Vienna's 9th district, Alsergrund, served as the festival headquarters . The concerts took place there ( Statt-Beisl | in the WUK , foyer, hall) and in the immediate vicinity in the Amtshaus Alsergrund, in the Wilhelm Exner Hall of the former kk Gewerbeförderungsamt (today the HLMW9 Michelbeuern ), in the Schubert Theater and the Lokalen Café Weimar / The palm as well as clash instead. The Waves Festival 2017 (September 28 to October 1) took place again largely in the WUK and in places in the vicinity, in the Wilhelm Exner Hall, the auditorium and the courtyard of the HLMW9 , the Schubert Theater , the parish hall the Canisiuskirche as well as the restaurants Isaac's and Clash.
