Astrid North
Astrid North (* August 24, 1973 in Berlin as Astrid Karina North Radmann; † June 25, 2019 there ) was a German soul singer . She was the singer of the German bands Cultured Pearls , with whom she recorded five albums , and Soulounge , with whom she released three albums. She was also on tour with the American singer Gabriel Gordon.
Life
North made her first experiences as a singer with the school band Colorful Dimension in Berlin. In March 1992 she met B. La and Tex Super, who were studying at the Hamburg University of Music and Theater and were looking for a singer for their band Cultured Pearls. The trio placed in the German charts with four singles and four albums .
In 1994, North also sang for the dance-pop band Big Light on their hit single Trouble Is . In 1996 she was a guest in the side project Little Red Riding Hood by the Fury-in-the-Slaughterhouse brothers Kai and Thorsten Wingenfelder , from which, in addition to the complete album of the same name, the release Life’s Too Short resulted.
Sleepy Eyes , written and sung by North , appears in the soundtrack of the film Tor zum Himmel (2003) by director Veit Helmer . In 2003 she performed at the festival Das Fest in Karlsruhe , where she sang a cover version of the Aerosmith hit Walk This Way with Sasha in addition to her own songs .
In 2005 she took part in the charity project Home , which produced an album for the benefit of the orphans of the “Beluga School of Life” in Thailand that were affected by the seaquake in the Indian Ocean and the subsequent flood disaster . In addition to the orphans themselves, guitarist Henning Rümenapp ( Guano Apes ), Kai Wingenfelder (Fury in the Slaughterhouse), Maya Saban and others were also involved. She also recorded a new version of his classic Sunny with Bobby Hebb , which was reissued for the piece's anniversary in 2016.
In 2006 North sang the pieces My Ride , Spring Is Near and No One Can Tell on the album The Ride by Basic Jazz Lounge, a project by jazz trumpeter Joo Kraus . In addition, she worked as a workshop lecturer at the pop course at the Hamburg University of Music and Theater.
In spring 2010 she appeared in the opening act for Miss Platnum's fakebling tour . Der Spiegel described her as one of the “leading ladies of the local soul scene”. Her solo debut album North was released on July 20, 2012 .
Her second solo album Precious Ruby , dedicated to her grandmother, was released on September 16, 2016 . The first single from it is Miss Lucy.
Astrid North was the mother of two children; their daughter was born in 2001, their son in 2006.
She died in June 2019 at the age of 45 from complications from pancreatic cancer .
