Cultured Pearls

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Cultured Pearls is a German band that plays a mix of soul , rock , jazz and funk ; You can even hear trip-hop , country and other styles from individual songs .

Band history

B. La and Tex Super got to know each other in 1992 while studying popular music at the Hamburg University of Music and Theater . The love of both musicians for pop soul grooves was the initial spark for the creation of the first demo recordings with an eight-track mixer . Tex, who actually played the flute and trumpet , took over the bass and B. La the drums . A short time later, Astrid North , whom B. La had noticed with her Berlin school band Colorful Dimension, joined as a singer and lyricist .

The trio, which went by the name of Cultured Pearls, received a major deal with WEA Records in 1995 and released their debut album Sing De La Sing with a mixture of funk, R&B and jazz pop at the end of the year . The record rose to number 92 on the German album charts . The release of Tic Toc , which reached number 65 on the charts, and an extensive tour through clubs and with Big Light made the group more popular.

From then on, influences from other musical styles such as country and rock could be heard in the songs Cultured Pearls'. In the spring of 1997, the second long player Spaceage Honeymoon followed , which made it to number 54 in Germany. The corresponding single Sugar Sugar Honey reached number 72, while the release Silverball was ranked 99th in May 1998.

With Liquefied Days , Cultured Pearls made it into the top 20 of the album charts in 1999, with Kissing the Sheets at number 87, a hit in the single charts for the last time. Disagreements about the musical style of the band subsequently led to a lengthy break, during which the members devoted themselves to other things.

Astrid North became a mother in autumn 2001. B. La published a piano book for schoolchildren, worked on a children's book and initiated the Soulounge project with guitarist Sven Bünger . Tex Super wrote scripts (including for One Case for Two ), made film music and worked as an arranger for artists such as Mousse T. , Bootsy Collins and Tom Jones .

2002 appeared with Life on a Tuesday , the fourth album of the band by Jon Kelly, who already for Chris Rea had worked produced was. In the German album charts, the record, on which B. Las Soul Lounge partner Sven Bünger played guitar, took 74th place. After a best-of album in 2003, which also contained three new songs, Cultured Pearls said goodbye indefinitely in a pause that continues to this day, but did not split up for good.
