Guano Apes (also Guano Babes ) is a German rock band from Göttingen that has existed with interruptions since 1994 . So far it has sold over four million records worldwide.

history

1994–2000: Founding and Proud Like a God

In 1994 Henning Rümenapp, Dennis Poschwatta and Stefan Ude founded the band Guano Apes in Göttingen. Sandra Nasić joined them that same year . The four had their first success when they prevailed against 1000 competitors in 1996 in the young talent competition "Local Heroes", which was organized by Radio ffn and VIVA . The Guano Apes had their first live appearance on March 10, 1994 in Moringen .

With the prize money donated by the state of Lower Saxony , they financed their first album Proud Like a God , which was released in 1997. The reaction to the plate was somewhat subdued at the beginning. That changed very quickly, however, and the album was able to stay in the German charts for over a year. The released singles “ Open Your Eyes ” and “Lords of the Boards” also became hits and are still well-known songs of the band. "Lords of the Boards" was a commissioned composition for the snowboard world championships . Only the title "Lords of the Boards" was required and it had to be integrated into the song. This was followed by an 18-month tour through Europe and the United States , which made the band known internationally and made the first album one of the best-selling debut albums with over three million copies. The group received the IFPI award for this .

The Guano Apes were one of the first German music groups to make extensive use of the Internet . The designer Friedel Muders was responsible for this and created the entire “visual image” of the band. He was awarded the German Echo Music Prize in 2001 for the cover design, the multimedia parts on the CDs and DVDs and for the concept and design of the website .

2000–2004: Don't Give Me Names and Walking on a Thin Line

In 2000, her second album, Don't Give Me Names, was released . The record won an Echo and an MTV Music Award . The single "Big in Japan" (originally by Alphaville ) was also a success.

The third album, Walking on a Thin Line , released in 2003, continued the international success of its predecessors. In September of the same year, the band surprisingly announced a break, as the members said they wanted to concentrate on solo projects first.

2004–2006: Lost (T) apes and dissolution

In 2004 they had three appearances at smaller festivals. On November 15, 2004, they released the single Break the Line . Sandra Nasic said in an interview that the band got along less and less. According to Dennis, the topic of money was also a not insignificant reason for separation:

“Basically, it was about the stupid Mammon - about the money. That’s the most common problem why bands break up. If someone thinks he's a born rock star or whatever, if you just lose the ground - that's what I could call it. Nor was it possible to get Sandra back down to earth. If you are encouraged by lawyers in silly matters or opinions in your environment, it becomes difficult. It's like in a marriage or relationship - at some point there is a row, then it just doesn't work anymore. "

Most recently the band released their second DVD Planet of the Apes / The Documentary . The “Planet of the Apes” farewell tour followed. They played their last concert at the Jolly Joker in Braunschweig. On December 1, 2006 the album Lost (T) apes was released , this is also available as a double CD under the name The Best and the Lost (T) Apes . The record contains demo tracks from 1994 to 1995.

2006–2008: After the dissolution

The individual musicians all continued to work in the music business. Dennis Poschwatta released an album in 2006 with the former guano mixer "G-Ball" under the name Tamoto on Gun Records and in 2007 an EP on the online-only label Fuego . Stefan Ude and Henning Rümenapp are also involved in this project. Henning Rümenapp worked as a music teacher and lecturer and worked in various committees of German music culture. Sandra Nasić released her solo album The Signal on September 28, 2007 . Henning Rümenapp, Dennis Poschwatta and Stefan Ude founded the band iO in September 2006 together with the R 'n' B singer Charles Simmons, with which they played over 50 concerts in 2007. On August 1, 2008, her first album For the Masses was released .

2009: comeback

In 2009 the band got together again and played at festivals in Europe during the summer. Band member Henning commented on the comeback:

“It hit me out of the blue when sometime at the end of 2008 Stefan, our bass player, arrived and said: 'I'll bring the band back together. I'll meet Sandra and do that. ' [...] At some point he came back and said: 'I talked to Sandra and she's also up for it and we could both imagine playing a few European festivals with you.' Then we met and first carefully approached each other. It was far more straightforward than any of us thought or feared. We noticed that a lot has changed. Each of us has become much more relaxed. We started at the age of 18, did it 300 days a year for eleven years, and now everyone has time to lead a private life and gather a lot of other experiences and impulses. "

The Guano Apes played on June 5th and 7th, 2009 at the rock festivals Rock im Park and Rock am Ring . At the Tuborg Green Fest Festival in Bucharest , the last leg of the festival tour, the group announced a new studio album for 2010. It was finally released on April 1, 2011 under the title Bel Air . The first single is Oh What a Night , which was released on March 18th.

“We wanted to find ourselves for ourselves first. At the very last concert of the season we sat together in the Nightliner and discussed: 'How is it for everyone? Does that feel good? Do we want to go on? ' Then everyone decided unanimously: 'We're going to make a record.' "

The reasons for the separation and the reunification after four years are classified differently by the band than in 2004, and they speak openly about them in current interviews:

“It's just a natural way. You can't go non-stop for ten years with as much full throttle as we've given this band since school. It just doesn't work. At some point you fully power up. For me it was important to live a normal life again. "

“Again or at all. It's no secret that we worked together because we hung on each other for so long. We have slowly grown closer to each other in recent years. The decision to make a record after the last concert was a bit like starting a new band. This is now a new era for the Guano Apes. "

In 2014, the band came back into focus when Sandra Nasić took part in the TV show Sing my Song - The Exchange Concert , where several of the band's hits were sung by other musicians.
