Don't Give Me Names is the second album by the German rock band Guano Apes .

Emergence

In 1998 the band planned a new album for the first time. At that time, however, the ideas were missing and the quartet found itself in a creative hole. In December 1998 the Guano Apes took a break in Denmark . There they jammed a bit and some ideas for new songs came up. In 1999 they toured the US for five weeks with POD .

In October 1999 the first studio session for Don't Give Me Names took place. With the support of their producer team - consisting of Fabio Trentini and Wolfgang Stach - the new album was completed.

Singles

Big in Japan

The first single Big in Japan (a cover version of the Alphaville song ) was released on March 20, 2000. The highest chart position in Germany was number 9, in Switzerland number 24 and in Italy number 5. Additional songs on the single are Gogan , I Want It , La Noix and Big in Japan as a space jazz dubmen mix. It was also released as a 3-track standard maxi. In response to a request from Herbert Grönemeyer , the Guano Apes were supposed to reinterpret a song from 50 years of German rock and pop music for the Pop 2000 sampler. Friedel, who designed the covers, had found a Japanese image that fits the cover of Big in Japan . There were characters on it that nobody understood. Friedel then went to the Goethe Institute in Göttingen and asked Japanese students there, from whom he learned that the characters meant stop . Then he had the idea to have the band name translated into Japanese. After a while they agreed on the translation of monkey poop .

The video was shot on February 9, 2000 in the foyer of the Tonhalle Düsseldorf under the direction of Ercin Filizli. The intercuts were filmed in Barcelona a week later . The shoot lasted all night. The gate in the video doesn't even exist, it was built specially.

The Guano Apes had their first TV appearance with Big in Japan at the Echo Awards in Hamburg . They had to play playback because the technicians had not been able to do the changes in the short time.

No speech

The second single was No Speech , which was released on May 26, 2000. The highest chart position in Germany was number 75, in Italy number 30 and in Portugal number 16. Additional songs on the single Mine All Mine and Ain't Got Time are . It was only released for radio and club promotion. The video is based on the film The Duel . For this, director Oliver Sommer had come up with a remake of this film. The location was a desert near Los Angeles .

Living in a Lie

The third single was Living in a Lie , which was released on October 2, 2000. The highest chart position in Germany was 84th place. Additional songs on the single are Rain (Live) , Don't You Turn Your Back on Me and Living in a Lie (album version) . A multimedia part is also available. It was also released as a 3-track standard maxi. The cover refers to a motif on Sandra's T-shirt that was featured in the video for Big in Japan .

Dödel Up

On January 29, 2001, the fourth single Dödel Up was released. The highest chart position in Germany was number 57. The additional songs on the single include Cuts , Candy Love , Dödel Up (Kukliczi Mix) and Dödel Up (album version) . It was also released as a 2 and 3 track standard maxi. A multimedia part is also available. Dödel Up is a pretty old title. The first fragments were made during the recording of the album Proud Like a God in 1996/97. At that time the song wasn't quite finished. According to the plan, it was supposed to be released in late summer 2000 as the third single from Don't Give Me Names . Because of the promotional tour through America, no video could be made. This gave rise to the idea of a cartoon.
