POD is a Christian nu-metal - band with reggae -Einflüssen from San Diego , California ( USA ).
POD stands for "Payable on death" and refers on the one hand to the identical clause at the end of US life insurances, on the other hand to Jesus Christ .
history
Beginning in the 1990s
In 1992 Marcos Curiel ( guitar ) and Noah “Wuv” Bernardo ( drums ) met through a mutual friend. Even back then, they played music together in a garage, but they did not yet form a real band. At some point Gabe Portillo joined the band as bass player, but soon left the band. In the same year, the mother of Bernardo's cousin Sonny Sandoval died of leukemia . He was very depressed by this event. Bernardo asked him if he wanted to take on the role of lead singer in their nascent band. Although Sandoval actually didn't like metal at all , and rather listened to rap , he agreed. In a relatively short time the three musicians gained a good reputation in the local metal scene and went on smaller tours. They earned their income mainly by selling T-shirts at their gigs. When Portillo was unable to take part in a smaller tour, his bandmates signed the bassist Traa Daniels as a temporary substitute, who eventually replaced Portillo as a permanent member of the band. Without having to search for a record label for a long time, they founded their own label Rescue Records with the help of Bernardo's father and then released two studio and one live album. They sold the discs as well as the T-shirts after their performances from their little tour bus. They even produced a short video clip for the song Selah on their second Independence release. These albums sold around 40,000 copies, which drew the attention of the big labels to the band.
First major label - quick successes
POD was signed to Atlantic Records . Her first release on Atlantic called The Fundamental Elements of Southtown was a huge success. The songs have been used as background music in various films (e.g. in Little Nicky ). In 2001, Satellite , the band's most commercially successful album, was released. The singles Alive and Youth of the Nation achieved high chart positions in several countries. Some songs on this album were used as background music in films and commercials (e.g. Boom ).
POD with Jason Truby as guitarist
In 2003 the guitarist and co-founder Marcos Curiel left the band shortly after they won the German record award Echo on February 17th in the category “Best International Alternative Act”. Since the band had already promised to produce a song as the soundtrack for the film Matrix Reloaded , a replacement guitarist had to be found within a short time. They chose longtime friend and former Living Sacrifice guitarist Jason Truby. After a short time he became a permanent member of the band and with this new line-up the album Sleeping Awake was created . In the same year another album was released called Payable on Death . However, the band did not manage to build on the commercial success of the previous album Satellite with this album . The songs of Payable on Death were much more melodic and calm than those of the previous albums. Following the release of this album, the band toured with Linkin Park, among others .
In early 2005, a new album was announced on the website. There were always videos that offered an insight into the production. The publication has been postponed several times and, contrary to earlier announcements, was not released in autumn, but provisionally in November 2005 in a limited edition of 40,000 copies under the name Warriors EP Vol. 2 . The album contained two demo songs, a cover version, two live recordings and a reggae song. Even before the new album was available in its regular form under the name Testify , three songs in full length were released in advance: Lights out , Goodbye for Now and Roots in stereo . Testify went on sale in Germany on January 27, 2006. The CD contains thirteen pieces of music, the first single is called Goodbye For Now .
In 2006 the band also produced the song Booyaka 619 , which is dedicated to their friend, professional wrestler Rey Mysterio .
Old guitarist - new label
On August 11, 2006, it was announced via infomail that POD had left Atlantic Records . The email said they were proud to be signed to Atlantic, but they said it was no longer the same label as it used to be.
In November Greatest Hits: The Atlantic Years was released, which includes 16 tracks written during her time at Atlantic Records, as well as the new song Going in Blind .
On December 20, 2006, the band announced on their homepage that founding member Marcos Curiel has rejoined the band. It was initially unclear whether Jason Truby would remain a member of the band. Truby stated in an electronic message to the Warriors at the end of the year, i.e. H. the POD fans, his departure from POD and thanked them for the three years in which he was a member of the band POD.
On February 2, 2007, the band signed a new recording deal with Columbia Records . The next album was released on April 8, 2008 and is called When Angels and Serpents Dance .
On December 16, 2009 it was announced that the band had started work on a new album, which should be released during 2010. Due to various other activities of the band members, Murdered Love was only released in 2012. As with the first three major albums, the producer was Howard Benson. In July 2011 the band released On Fire, a new song for free download on their website, which should serve as a foretaste for the new album. At the beginning of October 2011 it was announced on the homepage that they had signed a contract with the label Razor and Tie . The first single was Lost in Forever .
In 2014 the band released their unplugged studio album SoCal Sessions .
Awards
POD have been nominated six times for a Grammy and have received numerous platinum awards for their albums, most notably the 2001 album Satellite .
