Katy Perry (* 25. October 1984 in Santa Barbara , California as Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson ) is an American singer and songwriter . She became known in 2008 with I Kissed a Girl and Hot n Cold and sold over 126 million records and over 72 million download singles worldwide.

Youth and beginnings as a singer

The daughter of Pastor Maurice Keith Hudson and Mary Christine Perry sang in the local gospel choir as a child . Perry later discovered the British rock band Queen , she was enthusiastic about the voice of frontman Freddie Mercury . Perry didn't graduate from high school .

In 2001 she got a contract with the Red Hill Records label. Shortly afterwards, she released the debut album of the same name under the name Katy Hudson, which was commercially unsuccessful, although it was "widely accepted in the Christian music scene". After the release of her first album, she chose her mother's maiden name as a stage name so as not to be confused with the actress Kate Hudson .

In 2004 Perry worked for The Matrix label; she started working on her first mainstream album, which was due out in 2005. Several tracks have been released on their Myspace page, and Simple is featured on the soundtrack of One for 4 . In Nashville , Perry met the music producer Glen Ballard , who had already worked for No Doubt . He supported her and was at her side with advice and action during the first professional recordings. From then on it came more and more into the focus of influential production companies such as Capitol Records as well as the media.

2008–2009: One of the Boys

In May 2008 the first single I Kissed a Girl from her album One of the Boys was released in the USA, which she presented there on the Warped Tour . The song peaked at number one in Canada and topped the US and Australian charts in June . On August 1, the song was also released in Germany and entered the Media Control singles chart at number 2. In the third week, the song also took first place in Germany.

The second single followed was the song Hot n Cold , which on November 22, 2008 was the first download track to enter the chart at position 2 in Germany. With the release on CD, Hot N Cold reached the top of the German charts a week later and stayed there for eight weeks. For the computer game Sims 2 - Apartment Life , Perry recorded her songs Hot N Cold and Last Friday Night in the fictional language Simlisch. The latter is the run-in song by the dart player Fallon Sherrock .

On November 6, 2008, Perry hosted the 2008 MTV Europe Music Awards and won the Best Newcomer award . She was nominated for the ECHO 2009 in the Hit of the Year category. Also in 2009 Perry moderated the EMAs in Berlin . On November 13, 2009, a CD / DVD recording of their MTV Unplugged concert was released, recorded on July 22, 2009 in New York City . In August 2010, Perry was looking for 50 Austrians who wanted to play in their new music video for Firework . 2010–2012: Teenage Dream

From September 2010, Perry's song Teenage Dream was used as an image campaign for ProSieben and ProSieben Austria . After the last single Last Friday Night (TGIF) also reached number one on the US charts, she is the second artist after Michael Jackson with his album Bad to have five singles from an album at the top of the US charts. While this could not grant a top 10 placement, Prism reached the top 3 in Germany, Austria and Switzerland as well as the top in the USA and Great Britain.

On December 17, 2013, Dark Horse was followed by the third single, which again reached high chart positions. In February 2014 it climbed to the top of the US singles chart and reached diamond status for 10 million sales. As a guest musician, rapper Juicy J appeared on the trap-influenced song. In April, the song Birthday was released as the fourth single from the album.

From May 2014 to October 2015 Perry's tour The Prismatic World Tour ran , with which she promoted her album. On February 1, 2015, Perry appeared alongside Missy Elliott and Lenny Kravitz in the halftime break of Super Bowl XLIX . In June 2015 she was ranked third on the Forbes list of “Highest Paid Stars Worldwide”. This Is How We Do was released as the last single from the album in summer 2014. A remix with the rapper Riff Raff also got an official single release. 2016–2019: Witness

Her world tour Witness: The Tour was originally scheduled to start on September 7, 2017, but has been postponed for twelve days due to production delays. It comprised 115 shows.

With the release of the album, Perry announced a four-day livestream in cooperation with YouTube. Under the name Witness World Wide, YouTube streamed live for 24 hours, based on the Big Brother television format , from a house prepared with 41 cameras.
