Katy Perry (* 25. October 1984 in Santa Barbara , California as Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson ) is an American singer and songwriter . She became known in 2008 with I Kissed a Girl and Hot n Cold and sold over 126 million records and over 72 million download singles worldwide.
Youth and beginnings as a singer
The daughter of Pastor Maurice Keith Hudson and Mary Christine Perry sang in the local gospel choir as a child . Perry later discovered the British rock band Queen , she was enthusiastic about the voice of frontman Freddie Mercury . Perry didn't graduate from high school .
In 2001 she got a contract with the Red Hill Records label. Shortly afterwards, she released the debut album of the same name under the name Katy Hudson, which was commercially unsuccessful, although it was "widely accepted in the Christian music scene". After the release of her first album, she chose her mother's maiden name as a stage name so as not to be confused with the actress Kate Hudson .
In 2004 Perry worked for The Matrix label; she started working on her first mainstream album, which was due out in 2005. Several tracks have been released on their Myspace page, and Simple is featured on the soundtrack of One for 4 . In Nashville , Perry met the music producer Glen Ballard , who had already worked for No Doubt . He supported her and was at her side with advice and action during the first professional recordings. From then on it came more and more into the focus of influential production companies such as Capitol Records as well as the media.
Career
2008–2009: One of the Boys
In May 2008 the first single I Kissed a Girl from her album One of the Boys was released in the USA, which she presented there on the Warped Tour . The song peaked at number one in Canada and topped the US and Australian charts in June . On August 1, the song was also released in Germany and entered the Media Control singles chart at number 2. In the third week, the song also took first place in Germany.
The second single followed was the song Hot n Cold , which on November 22, 2008 was the first download track to enter the chart at position 2 in Germany. With the release on CD, Hot N Cold reached the top of the German charts a week later and stayed there for eight weeks. For the computer game Sims 2 - Apartment Life , Perry recorded her songs Hot N Cold and Last Friday Night in the fictional language Simlisch. The latter is the run-in song by the dart player Fallon Sherrock .
On November 6, 2008, Perry hosted the 2008 MTV Europe Music Awards and won the Best Newcomer award . She was nominated for the ECHO 2009 in the Hit of the Year category. Also in 2009 Perry moderated the EMAs in Berlin . On November 13, 2009, a CD / DVD recording of their MTV Unplugged concert was released, recorded on July 22, 2009 in New York City . In August 2010, Perry was looking for 50 Austrians who wanted to play in their new music video for Firework . This project was started under the name "Katys Projekt" by the Austrian telephone provider T-Mobile Austria .
2010–2012: Teenage Dream

On May 11, 2010 she released the first release of her album Teenage Dream with California Gurls . This was created in collaboration with the American rapper Snoop Dogg . The song reached at least platinum status in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, as well as in the United Kingdom and the USA. It has been sold over 6 million times in the United States. The colorful music video in particular received attention.
From September 2010, Perry's song Teenage Dream was used as an image campaign for ProSieben and ProSieben Austria . On October 2nd, 2010 she was a guest and sponsor of the ZDF live show Wetten, dass ..? with Thomas Gottschalk . At the end of September 2010, an advance video from an episode of the children's series Sesame Street in which Perry played was published on the video platform YouTube . The excerpt should be published in one of the next episodes. However, some American parents clashed with Perry's clothing, which they considered to be too skimpy, and prompted the creators with critical video comments not to broadcast the scene.
On October 26, 2010 Firework was released as the third single. This also reached the top 10 in over 20 countries. For 10 million sales in the US, Perry received a platinum record. With the American rapper Kanye West , she recorded a new version of the album track ET . This was released as a single in February 2011. With this Perry was once again able to reach the top 10 in a number of countries and almost 10 million sales.
From February to January 2012, Perry went on a world tour on the California Dreams Tour to promote her third studio album, Teenage Dream . She also starred in the episode Oh Honey of the television series How I Met Your Mother , which aired in the United States on February 7, 2011. For this she won the People's Choice Award for most popular guest actress in a series. In the Simpsons episode The Fight Before Christmas (season 22, episode 8), she was the first person to appear in real life alongside the Simpsons characters in the form of Muppets dolls. In the 2011 film The Smurfs , Perry speaks the Smurfette in the original English version.
After the last single Last Friday Night (TGIF) also reached number one on the US charts, she is the second artist after Michael Jackson with his album Bad to have five singles from an album at the top of the US charts. On February 13, Perry released the single Part of Me , which again reached number 1 on the US and UK charts. An autobiographical documentary titled Katy Perry: Part of Me was also shown in theaters in August , which is about her life and career and shows scenes from her last tour. In 2012, the film received a Teen Choice Award in the “Choice Summer Movie: Comedy / Music” category. On September 25, 2012, she was the Billboard Magazine for Woman of the Year nominated. In the 2012 presidential election she supported incumbent Barack Obama with some musical appearances such as the 30 Days to Victory concert.
2013–2015: Prism
In August 2013 the first pre-release single of their upcoming album was released. The song is titled Roar and advanced to number one on the Billboard Hot 100 . It also achieved platinum status in Germany, Austria and the United Kingdom, among others. The song has over 10 million sales. Unconditionally appeared parallel to the release of their fourth studio album Prism as a second single. While this could not grant a top 10 placement, Prism reached the top 3 in Germany, Austria and Switzerland as well as the top in the USA and Great Britain.
On December 17, 2013, Dark Horse was followed by the third single, which again reached high chart positions. In February 2014 it climbed to the top of the US singles chart and reached diamond status for 10 million sales. As a guest musician, rapper Juicy J appeared on the trap-influenced song. In April, the song Birthday was released as the fourth single from the album.
From May 2014 to October 2015 Perry's tour The Prismatic World Tour ran , with which she promoted her album. On February 1, 2015, Perry appeared alongside Missy Elliott and Lenny Kravitz in the halftime break of Super Bowl XLIX . In June 2015 she was ranked third on the Forbes list of “Highest Paid Stars Worldwide”. This Is How We Do was released as the last single from the album in summer 2014. A remix with the rapper Riff Raff also got an official single release. The song Walking on Air , which was released as a promo single in September of the previous year , was also recorded at the same time as the recordings .
2016–2019: Witness

Perry's pop song Rise was released in July 2016 . While the piece reached number 39 in Germany, it moved up to number 11 in the USA. In Australia and Finland, Rise achieved top rankings. The song was the official anthem for NBC Sports coverage of the 2016 Summer Olympics .
With the single Chained to the Rhythm , released in February 2017 , the singer reached the top 10 in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and the top 5 in the United Kingdom and the USA. Rapper Skip Marley was a guest on the reggae- influenced song . In April 2017 the song Bon Appétit was released. For this she worked with US hip-hop trio Migos . In collaboration with rapper Nicki Minaj , Perry released the single Swish Swish in May 2017 . The three songs are included on Perry's fifth studio album, Witness , which was released in June 2017. Her world tour Witness: The Tour was originally scheduled to start on September 7, 2017, but has been postponed for twelve days due to production delays. It comprised 115 shows.
With the release of the album, Perry announced a four-day livestream in cooperation with YouTube. Under the name Witness World Wide, YouTube streamed live for 24 hours, based on the Big Brother television format , from a house prepared with 41 cameras. Perry lived in this house for four days and was therefore under constant surveillance. Based on the name of their album Witness (Engl. For witness ) you should be able to witness their normal life. Every morning Perry posted a daily schedule on social media in which various activities were planned, such as Q&A, yoga or dinner with famous people such as Sia , James Corden , Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Caitlyn Jenner . In February 2019, Perry published 365, a collaboration with German-Russian DJ Zedd . Her track Never Really Over , which was also produced by Zedd, was released at the end of May . It reached the top 15 in the United States and Great Britain. In August 2019 her single Small Talk , which was produced by Charlie Puth , was released. The single Harleys in Hawaii was released in mid-October 2019. On November 1 of the same year she finally released Cozy Little Chrismas on all platforms and a corresponding music video. So the Christmas carol could reach other charts. The pop singer plans to release a new album in the second half of 2020.
2020: Smile
In the music video for the single Never Worn White , Perry announced her first pregnancy in March 2020. On July 9, 2020, Perry published the album cover of the new album Smile on Twitter. The album was originally due to be released on August 14, 2020, but the release has been postponed to August 28, 2020 due to production delays. The album includes the previously released singles Never Really Over , Harleys in Hawaii and Daisis, as well as the single Smile of the same name, which was released on July 10th.
Advertising contracts and reception
In 2010 the perfume Purr appeared under her name , followed in 2011 and 2013 by Meow and Killer Queen , which was expanded as a series with the fragrance variants Royal Revolution , Oh So Sheer (2014) and Spring Reign (2015). In July 2015 she presented her new perfume Mad Potion , which was followed up by Mad Love in June 2016. In 2017 she launched the Indi Visible perfume . At the beginning of 2012, Eylure launched a collection of artificial eyelashes under her name. Since 2014, Perry has been bringing out a jewelry collection, the Prism Collection, based on their design, in collaboration with the Claire's chain . She also promotes the make-up brand CoverGirl, the Italian fashion brand Moschino and Toyota Yaris . In 2012, an accessory pack for The Sims 3 was released under the name The Sims 3: Katy Perry Sweet World and the Showtime: Katy Perry Collector's Edition expansion pack . Private life
Perry has an older sister and a younger brother. She was in a relationship with musician Justin York, singer Matt Thiessen, actor Johnny Lewis and rapper Travie McCoy . Perry was married to Russell Brand from October 2010 to January 2012 . The couple met at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards. The wedding took place in Rajasthan , India , where the couple was also engaged. From late 2012 to early 2014, Perry was in a relationship with singer John Mayer . She has been dating British actor Orlando Bloom since early 2016 . The two got engaged in February 2019. In March 2020, she announced her pregnancy in her music video Never Worn White . At the end of this video clip, a slow piano ballad, Perry shows her bare baby bump in profile under a transparent dress. In the video clip for the song Daisies , which was released in mid-May 2020, the singer bathes naked and heavily pregnant in a stone pond with a waterfall. On August 27, 2020, Unicef announced the birth of their daughter as part of a fundraising campaign .
