Part of Me is a song by the American singer Katy Perry .

Belonging to the dance-pop and pop-rock genre, the song was written by Perry and Bonnie McKee, while the production is by Lukasz Gottwald , Cirkut and Max Martin . Critics compared the song to Perry's previous number one hit California Gurls (2010), the lyrics were aimed at Katy's ex-boyfriend Travie McCoy , but Perry rewrote the song to target her ex-husband Russell Brand .

The song was performed during the Teenage Dream Sessions by Perry, Dr. Luke, Bonnie Mckee and Max Martin, written together with the other songs Teenage Dream , Last Friday Night (TGIF) & California Gurls . According to Rolling Stone , McKee wrote the lyrics all night. After Perry had read the third line, she is said to have screamed: “We're buying you a car!” (Eng. “We'll buy you a car”). In an interview with blogger Alex Kazemi, McKee said of the song, “That's nice. Katy sings the song with so many emotions. It's really a beautiful song. ”On December 30, 2010, the demo version of the song hit the Internet.

In early 2012, Perry announced that Part of Me would be the first official single from the Teenage Dream album re-release . Prior to the 2012 Grammy Awards, Katy posted the song on the Internet and sang it at the gala that same day. Finally, Perry's label Capitol Records decided to release Part of Me on February 13, 2012.

Part of Me is a dance-pop song with pop-rock and house elements. The song was written by Dr. Luke produces. The singer describes herself as unbreakable after her separation from Russell Brand , Perry sings about it in lines like: “Days like this I want to drive away / Pack my bags and watch your shadow fade / 'Cause you chewed me up and spit me out / Like I was poison in your mouth / You took my light, you drained me down / But that was then and this is now, now look at me. “The composition of Part of Me was based on Perry's previous hit California Gurls ( 2010) compared. "This is the part of me / That you're never gonna ever take away from me / Throw your sticks in the stones / Throw your bombs and your blows / But you're not gonna break my soul / This is the part of me that you're never gonna ever take away from me, "sings Katy Perry. MTV's Chris Ryan speculated whether the song might refer to Perry's ex-boyfriend Travie McCoy , while New York's Amanda Dobbins described the song as a "breakup anthem."

On February 12, 2012, Katy Perry sang the song for the first time with ET at the 2012 Grammy Awards . On March 22nd, she sang it for the first time in Germany at the Echo Awards 2012 .

Charts

Part of Me became the 21st single that debuted directly at number 1 on the US Billboard Hot 100 . Part of Me sold between 400,000 and 420,000 copies in the first week, which was enough for the song to land at number 1 directly on the Hot Digital Songs and the Billboard Hot 100. This makes it Katy Perry's seventh number one hit in the United States.
