(2014)

The California Dreams Tour was the second concert tour of the US - a musician and songwriter Katy Perry . With this tour she promoted her third studio album Teenage Dream , in some continents also the re-release Teenage Dream: The Complete Confection . The tour began in Lisbon , Portugal in February 2011 and continued through Europe , Australasia , Asia , South America and North America until January 2012 .

The tour was about a young woman who lives in a colorless world without love because her father is a strict butcher. The only thing she has is her cat Kitty Purry, her love for sweets and the baker's boy. During the show, like in the music video for California Gurls , she wanders through a world full of sweets.

The tour ranked 16th in the Pollstars “2011 Top 25 Worldwide Tours”, which raised over 59.5 million US dollars . After the end of 2011, the tour also placed 13th on the “Top 25 Tours” billboards , which again confirmed the same win with 124 concerts. Perry won a Favorite Tour Headliner award at the 38th People's Choice Awards . Rehearsals took place at The Forum in Inglewood .

background

“Every time I go on tour, I always think one step ahead and think about how I can do better next time. When I did my first concert tour ( Hello Katy Tour ), I came up with the idea of doing a tour full of sweets. I'm really looking forward to it, it will definitely be 10 times better than last time. '"

- Katy Perry

While promoting her album Teenage Dream , Perry told some media outlets that her next tour should be the visible proof of her hard work and that fans should feel it. On Twitter she announced: "I hope that it's going to engage all of your senses: sight, sound, smell, taste, touch" ("I hope that I can meet all of your senses: see, hear, smell, taste, Keys"). The tour was officially announced in conjunction with the release of their single Firework in October 2012. In 2011 Katy Perry announced her North American concerts during a live chat on the social network Facebook . It was also announced that Robyn , Yelle , Marina and the Diamonds and Janelle Monae will open the concerts in the respective continents. Also Englishwoman Jessie J would have been intended for concert openings of the last concerts in the fall, but she has been injured during the tour samples and was not allowed to occur after medical examinations. Ellie Goulding stood in for her.

Calvin Harris had been slated for opening act for England and Ireland . On March 27, 2011, Perry announced via Twitter that Harris was no longer available. According to Harris, technical limitations may have been the trigger. Instead, DJ Skeet stepped in .

The Perrys website announced that over $ 150,000 had been raised for the Tickets-For-Charity fundraiser. You yourself are very committed to charity, the health of children, money, the generous release of water and other charitable purposes. Her record label EMI donated a signed album by Katy Perry to an auction of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Auckland (American animal welfare association for the prevention of cruel animal experiments in Auckland) . This also served as an advertisement for the California Dreams Tour in New Zealand , where it performed a few weeks later.

"All what I want is just to make people smile (All I want is just to make people happy.) '"

- Katy Perry on a backstage video during her california dreams tour

From her first America concert on June 7th, 2011 in Duluth , almost all of the tour costumes, as well as their sequence and stage design, changed several times. While only their Hot n Cold wardrobe remained the same for the costumes (multiple changes), the stage staircase was extended by two corridors (one on the left and one on the right) including steps, and a catwalk was added to get even closer to the fans. Also new was that from the America concerts onwards she flew through the hall with her guitar on a pink cotton candy cloud during the acoustic version of Thinking Of You .

The following sections explain the individual parts of the tour in detail:

Welcome to Candyfornia

Katy Perry during Hummingbird Heartbeat

The show begins with a video introduction by Cole Walliser , who tells the story of a girl named Katy. She lives in a dreary, colorless and sad world. She wastes her life in her father's butcher, who doesn't treat her nicely. When she is asked to cut another piece of meat and she subsequently cuts off the best piece, her father insults her and she disappears. She goes to the bakery around the corner for sweets, sugar and cupcakes. In love with the baker's boy, she orders a cupcake, goes home and in the evening with her cat Kitty Purry wishes that she would get out of here. She wakes up and notices that her cat is no longer in bed and has fled through the window. When she wants to look for her cat and climbs through the window, she notices a world full of colors, joy and sweets. There she finds her cat again. Katy appears from a platform below and sings, accompanied by her dancers, Teenage Dream and then Hummingbird Heartbeat . After this song ends, Perry greets her audience and invites them on a trip to Candyfornia. In addition - based on their next song - a slot machine is on stage. She starts it and sings Waking Up In Vegas . Just like in the music video for Waking Up in Vegas , there's an Elvis imitator on stage. Shortly before the end of this song, Katy throws chocolate coins into the audience and disappears from the stage to make a costume change.

Visual touch

Another video is played in which Katy takes a shortcut and she takes it to a candy forest. There she meets two cheeky pantomimes. They are on stage with her next song Ur So Gay , where she appears in a blue dress. At the end of the song, she eats a piece of her magical brownie. In addition, the two mimes help her to change on stage for the next song Peacock . In this song, she wears a peacock tail, which she can put up or down as you wish. During her next song I Kissed a Girl , in which she appears in a glittering green evening dress, Katy feels dizzy from the effects of the magical brownie. Before she starts the song, she brings a boy from the respective city on stage to flirt with him a little and give him a kiss. After that, she starts with the song that starts with a jazz version and continues with the pop version. After Katy gets dizzy because of the brownie - played - she leaves the stage. To use extra time, two dancers dance during the ballad version of I Kissed A Girl until the song is over.

Meat

Perry during Circle the Drain

In the next part a video is shown in which Katy is looking for her cat Kitty and also finds it. She tries to grab her by the tail, turns several times and then looks to the ground, where you can see how she gets cat ears and a tail herself. Afterwards you can see the father who wanted this on purpose and laughs. After the video, Katy Circle sings The Drain . Then she presents with a laser show ET Who Am I Living For and Pearl follow , with Katy standing on a pedestal, which she transports up in a glittering dress, where she stands until the end of the song. Then Perry changes again.

The wedding wrong

Katy sings Thinking Of You

Another video follows showing Katy Perry in Candyfornia. There she sees a couple going for a walk together. She then wishes exactly the same thing with the baker boy and remembers the first meeting with him when he handed her the cupcake. The piano is playing meanwhile. After the video ends, Katy comes up from below with a swing full of roses and sings Not Like The Movies in a cotton candy dress . During the second verse, a white screen is pulled up behind her and a film is projected onto it, showing some cartoon characters who love each other. After the song ends, Katy talks to the audience and starts the acoustic part. With her guitar she first sings the song The One That Got Away , then she sings a medley of her favorite songs Only Girl (In the World) by Rihanna , Jay-Z ’s Big Pimpin and Willow Smith’s Whip My Hair . Sometimes she also sings Rebecca Blacks Friday . After these songs, a large cloud of cotton candy appears, which Katy Perry climbs on with her guitar and flies through the entire hall. She talks to her fans and then sings (still in the air) Thinking Of You . Towards the end of the song, Katy comes back on stage and disappears to get changed.

The Blue Tribute

Blue tribute part
California Dreams Tour-Seattle.jpg
Katy at her Firework performance

The next section also begins with a video introduction. Katy is looking for her cat and quickly finds it. The cat is waiting for you with a letter and a blue wig. She reads the letter, which reads: "To find a love that's true, you must wear the wig that's blue" ("To find your real love, you must wear the blue wig"). Then she wears her wig and opens another letter in which she receives an invitation to the "Big City Bakers Ball" from the baker boy. Her joy is immense, but she has nothing to wear. She searches her closet and the song Hot n Cold begins. In this song she makes six costume changes. She comes up from a platform in a pompous blue dress full of flowers and with a blue wig. There she already finds the first curtain and after the change she appears in a red, knee-length dress. After the first chorus, she goes to the magic curtain and changes her dress for the second time. This time she appears in a yellow dress that is reminiscent of a lemon. A short time later she changes her costume again and appears in a green dress with a pink frame. After a short choreography, she makes her fourth costume change in a song and appears in a pink dress decorated with hearts. She makes her penultimate change after the bridge of the song and appears in a three-colored dress that is supposed to be reminiscent of an ice cream, as the colors are brown, white and pink. At the last change, she climbs the stairs, two of her dancers shower her with confetti and she appears in a blue dress. She wears this dress for her next song Last Friday Night (TGIF) . For her cover song of Whitney Houston's I Wanna Dance with Somebody (Who Loves Me) , she asked 20 fans on stage to dance with her to this song. They can meet Perry in the backstage area after the concert. Afterwards Perry sings her favorite song Firework , where right rockets are ignited and pyrotechnics are used at selected concerts .

The Sweet Final

At their performance by California Gurls

While Perry is changing for the last time, one last video appears. This shows that she only dreamed her trip to Candyfornia. When she wakes up, her life becomes happy and colorful again. In addition, the baker's boy is standing in her room in a gingerbread costume and brings her the cupcakes she wished for her breakfast. Perry returns with silver underwear, her bra reads "Katy's Kisses", based on Hershey's Kisses . In her last song California Gurls , she dances with gingerbread men and fires cream at the audience with her oversized pistol. Then she thanks the audience, bows with her team and leaves the stage.

Recordings and televised broadcasts of the tour

Katy Perry's concert in Rio de Janeiro , Brazil (which was part of the Rock in Rio festival) was shown on various Brazilian television stations; internationally you could follow this concert live on YouTube . Perry himself had announced at her concert on November 23rd at the Staples Center in Los Angeles , USA that this concert would be recorded and that there would be a DVD of it. However, a release date was never announced. However, Perry announced via Twitter in March 2012 that she had worked with Paramount Pictures to make a documentary about her life and the California Dreams Tour called Katy Perry: Part of Me , which was released in 3D in summer 2012 . She paid for the film herself. The film was released on DVD in the US on September 18; the release date for Europe was December 13th.

Reviews

The tour received positive reviews. Bridget Jones from Stuff NZ even gave the tour an excellent rating:

"There is no doubt that fans left the concert with the smell of candy in their mouths satisfied after watching one of the most extravagant and fun concerts in the Vector Arena . '"

- Bridget Jones, Stuff NZ

Bernadette McNulty of The Daily Telegraph gave the tour four stars out of five. She especially praised the history of the tour:

“Your California Dreams Tour is less of a pop concert and more of a megawatt jukebox musical. Everyone says that it includes the glitter and glamor, but the music sometimes falls by the wayside and it doesn't really leave a lasting impression. '"

- Bernadette McNulty, The Daily Telegraph

MTV's Jon Mitchell shared a review of Hempstead and agrees:

“The show, which is about Katy's trip to Candyfornia and the chase of the baker's boy, remains so impressive in its content and does not deviate from the fact that it is almost a jukebox Broadway musical in the sense of“ Rock of Ages "Or" Mamma Mia ". '"

- Jon Mitchell, MTV

There were other reviews, mainly criticizing her weak voice and choreographies, but also her songs, which were devoid of any substance, but mostly she was particularly praised for her stage show, her stage design and her costumes (which were in the candy style).
