Teenage Dream (German: 'Jugendtraum') is the third studio album by the American singer Katy Perry . It was released worldwide on August 24, 2010 by their labels Capitol Records and Virgin Records . The album was inspired by dance , pop and rock artists from the 1980s and 1990s such as ABBA , Ace of Base , Cyndi Lauper and The Cardigans . Perry worked with many songwriters and producers on her album, including Greg Wells, Dr. Luke , Max Martin , Ryan Tedder , Greg Kurstin , Benny Blanco , Ester Dean , The-Dream and Christopher "Tricky" Stewart. The album mixes pop music with dance, electro-pop and rock influences. Hip-hop , teen-pop , electro-rock and Eurodisco elementsare also partlyincluded. In terms of content, the album deals with topics such as love, career, self-confidence and leisure.

Critics received the album mainly with mixed expectations, especially the dance anthems, while the auto-tune effects and overproduction on the computer were criticized. In the United States, the album debuted at number 1 on the US Billboard 200 a week after its release, selling 192,000 units . The album later went double-platinum for over 2,000,000 units sold in the United States. To date, the album has sold around 5.5 million times worldwide. Six singles from the album have so far been released that have become hits worldwide: California Gurls feat. Snoop Dogg , the theme song , Firework , ET feat. Kanye West , Last Friday Night (TGIF) and The One That Got Away . All but the sixth single became number one hits in the United States and top ten hits in more than twenty countries. The first five singles were also number one hits in the radio and download charts in the United States, making Katy Perry the first ever artist to do this in history.

When the song Last Friday Night became Katy Perry's fifth number one hit in a row from the album, she became the second artist in the 53-year history of the Billboard Hot 100 to release five number one hits from an album when Michael Jackson first achieved this in 1987 and 1988 with his album Bad . Teenage Dream is also the only album to release seven number one hits on the Billboard Hot Dance Club Songs chart. With the singles, Katy Perry stayed in the Hot 100 Top Ten for 69 weeks in a row, something that nobody had achieved before. All in all, all of the singles from the album have sold over 30 million times worldwide.

Background information

Katy Perry began recording the album on October 13, 2009. She said, "I have a lot of shifts to work through, but luckily I have Greg Wells to help me switch off." It was reported that Perry I've worked with various artists and producers, including Lukasz Gottwald , Max Martin , Ester Dean , Greg Kurstin , Guy Sigisworth, Cathy Dennis and Christopher "Tricky" Stewart. The latter told the rap-up magazine that the album's musical style was pop-rock . “It's a completely different field of work for me. This project is very important to me because people are waiting to see what I will do. "

development

Katy Perry is promoting her international hit single California Gurls

In May 2009 Katy Perry spoke to Rolling Stone about her upcoming second album: “The second album is very important to me because I think it shows whether I was born for this or just lucky. Basically, I don't want to alienate myself from the audience I have now. Some artists think they could do a complete about-face after success with one song and one album. But I think that's the wrong way to go. "Perry continued," It's definitely going to be pop music. Lovefool from the Cardigans meets Lucky Star from Madonna , but with a bit more meat on the bones, lyrically. It's not just about the beat and dancing, I want to give the songs a meaning. "

On March 27, 2010, at the Kids' Choice Awards , Katy Perry announced the release of the album. “The album is out this summer. It's going to be a summer record. ”She added that her previous statements about the album are still relevant. “It's roller skating. It's the nineties. It's ace of base . It's Cyndi Lauper . It's colorful and so much, much more. ”She also said,“ There could be some pretty cool guest appearances from rappers from the west coast. I mean, I'm a Californian girl and some friends might show up. ”During a photo shoot for Rolling Stone , Perry confirmed the title of the first single California Gurls , a collaboration with Californian rapper Snoop Dogg . The song is intended as an answer to the New York anthem Empire State of Mind by Jay-Z and Alicia Keys . Perry explained the idea behind the work: “It's so great that Empire State of Mind is so successful and that everyone is talking about New York, but what about Los Angeles ? What about california ? It's been a while since there was a song about California, especially from a girl's point of view. So we were inspired by Prince , the nineties, almost by the house music of the nineties. ” California Gurls was a great success and was praised as a“ promising, tangy toast to summer fun ”.

Perry sings ET in Budapest.

For Teenage Dream , Katy Perry worked again with producer Lukasz Gottwald , as well as with producer Max Martin , who has written songs for Kelly Clarkson , Pink , Sugababes and Adam Lambert , among others . Perry said of the collaboration: “With Max Martin and Dr. Working Luke has been wonderful work together. I've already worked with them on One of the Boys , and of course I wanted to work with them again and much more intensively. Instead of two or three songs, there are now six or seven results of our collaboration on the album. "

On April 30, 2010, Perry announced that the recordings for the album were complete. At the same time, she thanked producer Greg Wells for the collaboration.

On July 22nd, Katy Perry unveiled the artwork for her album. She presented a 15 by 15 centimeter screen. The painted album cover shows Perry lying naked on his stomach surrounded by pink clouds and against a blue sky and was painted by the artist Will Cotton from Los Angeles via a live video stream. Perry explained the decision for a painted album cover as follows: "Maybe CDs will be extinct by the time I release the album ... So I wanted to come up with a bang that my collaboration with Will would be unforgettable."

The second single from the album, the title track Teenage Dream , was released a week after the album was released on September 3, 2010 in Germany. This single also received positive feedback and reached number 1 on the US singles charts. That makes Teenage Dream Katy Perry's third number one single in the American singles chart. The singles Firework , ET and Last Friday Night (TGIF) were also able to reach number 1 on the US singles chart, making Perry with Michael Jackson the only artist who has so far released all singles from her album Teenage Dream to number 1 in the US singles charts could achieve. On September 28, 2011, the sixth single The One That Got Away from their album Teenage Dream was released in the USA .

composition

The album begins with the title song of the same name , an electro-rock- pop-rock ballad. The song has musically similar elements to California Gurls . The second song on the album and the fifth single Last Friday Night (TGIF) is a danceable pop song with a catchy hookline. In terms of content, the song deals with a rushed party night that Katy had in Santa Barbara (California). The third song on the album and the lead single California Gurls is an electro - House -song. It was created by Jay-Z and Alicia Keys as a reference to the Empire State of Mind and is a declaration of love for the white beaches and lifestyle in California. Many critics and fellow musicians dubbed the song the "California Anthem" and "Beach Anthem". The song contains synthesizer melodies and Perry's vocals were technically helped by auto-tune . The third single and fourth song on the album Firework is a ballad-like pop-dance anthem influenced by Jack Kerouac's novel On the Road . Perry said "the song has a beautiful message". Violins were used for the instrumentation in the song, giving the song its fairytale melody. Perry's singing has been described as "inspiration" by MTV's Chris Ryan.

The fifth song on the album is the dance-pop title Peacock , which has been compared to Toni Basil's 1982 number one hit Mickey and Gwen Stefani’s number one hit Hollaback Girl from 2005. Circle the Drain describes the split between Perry and her ex-boyfriend, gym-class heroes front man Travie McCoy . The seventh song and the sixth single is The One That Got Away . The song is a pop ballad with dance pop and teen pop elements. Perry explained, “… I wrote The One That Got Away about making promises to someone forever but not being able to keep their promises in the end. It's a bittersweet story. Hopefully the listener learns by hearing the song. "

The eighth song is ET, an electro-pop and hip-hop ballad about "falling in love with a stranger". When the single was released, Katy Perry briefly engaged Kanye West as a guest rapper on the version of the song, which Katy released as a single. The ninth song is the electro rock track Who Am I Living For , which deals with religious topics. The tenth track, Pearl, is a Eurodisco song that Perry said was inspired by herself. The eleventh song is Hummingbird Heartbeat , an emotional pop-rock ballad with a new wave melody. Many critics praised this song and considered it excellent for a single release. The twelfth song is Not Like the Movies , a slow, quiet teen-pop ballad. Katy Perry didn't finish songwriting for Not Like the Movies until after she met Russell Brand . Katy said the song was "very special" to her as it was about a story that touched her. Perry later stated that she was trying to emotionally express all of her feelings with her singing in the song Not Like the Movies .

The reviews of Teenage Dream were mixed. Metacritic calculated an average rating of 52% based on 14 reviews, which corresponds to “average or mixed ratings”.

Eberhard Dobler, a reviewer at Laut, gave the album a negative rating: “Katy Perry naturally wants to sound adult - and that is already what the synth-humping title track does at the beginning of the CD. Like the rest of the record, the number seems pretty clear: Instead of celebrating the popsause right away, the guitar licks are set slowly at first [...] Last Friday Night (TGIF) would be without the stupid party crash text and the songwriter's ultimately irrelevant organ even a respectable indie dance number with a flawless synth-sax solo. This time dance (often trained in house or electro hip-hop) should dominate this time, says Katy. The single California Gurls also fulfills this intention - Janet Jackson , for example, used to be responsible for such funky good-mood West Coast numbers […] Otherwise the synths, drum machines and sequencers stomp through the pop club - the somber circle the drain has an effect in this context almost too tough for an album that otherwise makes a strawberry taste. "

Albert Ranner from CDStarts also criticized Perry's work: “Perry takes off his earthy, rocky trousers and concentrates entirely on scratchy to pumping computer sounds, which are always accompanied by an unshakable bass avalanche. In retrospect, the very nice harbingers of California Gurls and Teenage Dream are no different from blenders, who promise a lively and lively summer album, but which is ultimately overwhelmed by its own force and primitiveness. Firework ends up in the next best Mallorcadisco right next to Markus Becker and Mickie Krause , "Peacock" steals unabashedly from Avril Lavigne's girlfriend , The One That Got Away chases after the crisp "Maneater" ( Nelly Furtado ), ET is allowed to All the Things She Said ( tATu ) and everything on Teenage Dream seems slightly antiquated, outdated and artificial. Why Katy has given up the natural wink of her major debut for these cheap bollerbeats, the devil knows [...] Thus, the hoped-for daydream unfortunately becomes bitter reality, which in times of Black Eyed Peas , David Guetta & Co. is shockingly flat and even the return More rocky bliss ( Hummingbird Heartbeat ) or ballad-like fairy shine ( Not Like the Movies ) is more due to an invisible checklist to guarantee stylistic variety than the urge to tell a gripping or touching story. Teenage Dream is cotton candy: sweet, seductive and sugar-pink, but if you wet it a little, all that's left is a misshapen, inedible lump that isn't worth all the tooth decay. "

However, the editorial staff of the HR3 praised Teenage Dream :

“Both Lady Gaga and Katy Perry learned within a very short time how to use the keyboard of the pop star business successfully. Of course, this also includes a staged scandal here and there. But while Lady Gaga rides almost exclusively on this track at the moment, Katy Perry left this path immediately after her first intimate confession I Kissed a Girl and then opted for the subject of cheeky girlies. And in this role she really pulls out all the stops on Teenage Dream [...] A teenager who on the one hand is typically American, but apart from that, with his casual charm and radiance of pure joie de vivre, is just about to take on the rest of the world to take by storm [...] "Pop At Its Best", or in other words: an album that is just fun! "
