One of the Boys (German: "One of the boys" ) is the second studio album by the American singer Katy Perry and at the same time the first to be released on the major label Capitol Records . The album was released worldwide in June 2008.
background
Perry said in an interview that she had been working on the album since she was 18 years old. During the making of the album, she was fired from two record companies and wrote around seventy songs during that time. Katy worked with well-known producers such as Greg Wells , Dr. Luke , Dave Stewart and Max Martin on the album. Perry co-wrote each song and wrote three songs alone.
While talking about the songs on the album, she said that she released the song Ur So Gay as a sort of introduction to the album:
“The album will have a lot of the same characteristics as Ur So Gay . There will be a lot of songs that tell a story because the lyrics of a song are very important to me. There are a few songs that will make you cry, but there are others that will make you dance and sing. Every song is on the album for a reason. "
Themes and style
Although the musical style and type of composition is strongly reminiscent of the style of Avril Lavigne and Lily Allen , Perry has been supported by artists and bands such as Queen (especially Freddie Mercury ), The Beach Boys , Heart , Joni Mitchell , Paul Simon , Cyndi Lauper and Alanis Morissette influenced.
She wrote the song Ur So Gay as a kind of tool of revenge against her ex-boyfriend. Her second single, I Kissed a Girl , also became a controversial topic as many saw lesbian homosexuality themed. The song was inspired by actress Scarlett Johansson . In the single Hot n Cold , Perry explains the indecision of a boyfriend and the ups and downs of a relationship. Other songs, like the ballads I'm Still Breathing and Thinking of You , tell of relationships that didn't work out. According to the singer, Lost is the most personal song on the album as it has a biographical reference. Waking Up in Vegas is about eccentric and wacky trips to Las Vegas with friends . Just like Ur So Gay and Hot n Cold , the songs Mannequin and If You Can Afford Me mock critical relationships with ex-boyfriends.
reception
The album received positive reviews from Billboard magazine, which claimed that since the album Jagged Little Pill by Alanis Morissette was not a debut album packed with so many potential hits. The NME wrote that " Madonna and Perez Hilton might be fans, but if you're interested in enjoying a record, don't buy it".
Commercial win
One of the Boys debuted at number ninth on the US Billboard 200 . The album sold over 1.2 million and received platinum certification. The album stayed in the charts for a total of 81 weeks. It reached sixth place in Canada and has since been certified double platinum by the CRIA.
In Great Britain the album reached number eleven in the UK albums chart. In Australia, it rose to number eleven and was awarded platinum for over 70,000 copies sold.
The album reached number six in Austria and Switzerland and was awarded platinum and gold respectively. In the German charts, the album made it to number 7 and was awarded gold for over 150,000 copies sold.
The album sold over 5 million times worldwide.
