Heart is an American rock band that emerged in 1973 in Seattle from the predecessor band The Army (later White Heart ). She became known in 1977 with the song Barracuda , which has since been covered by numerous bands. In Germany, the band became known through appearances in the music show Musikladen on German television . The group had their greatest worldwide success in the summer of 1987 with the album Bad Animals and the release Alone .
Band history
The band founded by the two sisters Ann and Nancy Wilson initially played melodic rock music . From the genre name “ hard rock ”, the two sisters adapted the similar sounding “heart rock ” to the group name. With their debut album Dreamboat Annie they already achieved a box-office hit in Canada, the USA and the Netherlands in the spring of 1976. The first single releases were How Deep It Goes and Magic Man (number nine in the USA). Crazy on You reached the top 40 of the American charts. The album went platinum.
The follow-up album Little Queen was released in mid-1977 and was similarly successful. With Barracuda it contained a single hit that narrowly missed the top 10 in the US and ranked 8th in Germany. The album Dog and Butterfly also went platinum the following year .
From 1981, the group's success faded. The Wilson sisters then changed their band members, changed the style to smooth, more radio-friendly pop-rock, also played pop ballads and occasionally cover versions. The album Heart , released in the summer of 1985, was the most successful in the band's history and reached the top of the charts. It sold over 5 million times in the US alone and was also very successful in Europe. Out of five single releases, four made it into the top 10. The follow-up album Bad Animals was able to build on its success almost seamlessly in mid-1987. The first single Alone reached the top of the charts in the USA. The two follow-up singles Who Will You Run To and There's the Girl were also very successful.
In the spring of 1990 the album Brigade was released, which sold 2 million times in the USA alone and with the title All I Wanna Do Is Make Love to You posted another big hit. In late 1993, Desire Walks On was released, which was only sold over 500,000 times in the US and just hit the top 40 with the single Will You Be There (In the Morning) . In the fall of 1995, The Road Home was a live album and in the spring of 1997 a greatest hits album with the band's early hits of the 1970s and 1980s was released.
It wasn't until mid-2004 that a follow-up album with new material was released, Jupiter's Darling , which, however, did not come close to building on the earlier successes. The Red Velvet Car , released in summer 2010, reached the top 10 of the charts for the first time.
In August 2016, the band was on the verge of collapse after Ann Wilson's husband, Dean Wetter, got violent backstage during a concert against Nancy Wilson's two sons. Heart played the tour to the end, but the two sisters stopped talking and then went on to solo projects. After a three-year break, the band got together again in 2019 for a reunion tour Love Alive .
Overall, the band was able to sell over 30 million records, placed 18 albums and 29 singles in the US Billboard charts and nine albums and 13 singles in the German and / or English charts.
The band received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2012 and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on April 18, 2013 .
