Teenage Dream ( dt. "Teenage dream") is a song that the US singer Katy Perry with the songwriter Bonnie McKee and her producer Benny Blanco , Max Martin , Dr. Luke wrote of 2010. It was released on August 24, 2010 as the second single from Perry's third studio album, Teenage Dream . The song received a 2010 Grammy Award nomination for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance .
background
When Perry and her co-writer Bonnie McKee first met in 2004, they were both "fascinated by Lolita " and both used this topic for earlier recordings. For the recordings of Teenage Dream , Perry and McKee had that “forever young” idea in their heads. Katy initially wrote about Peter Pan , but she later considered this to be "too young". She wanted more sharpness and sex in the text. A finished version was made by Dr. Luke refused after Benny Blanco rejected the version. "If Benny doesn't like it, America doesn't like it either," said Dr. Luke's reason for the rejection. Blanco played Perry and McKee's 2007 single Homecomming by The Teenager and asked if they could write their song in a similar style, after which McKee rewrote the song. The following week, Perry McKee invited Dr. Luke and Max Martin move to their hometown of Santa Barbara to continue writing the song. McKee tried to get Dr. Luke was angry about the time wasted on the chorus and forbade further changes to it, so that only work on the verses followed, for which Perry had already prepared some performances. After recording the voices, McKee took Dr. Luke and Martin aside and told them again about their new ideas for the chorus. Then the chorus was rewritten. Katy Perry stated that although the song has been rewritten so many times, she is "happy to finally be at the point everyone is okay with". In June 2010, she confirmed that Teenage Dream would be released as the second single from her future album. Regarding the naming of their album and the single, Perry stated that this is meant to be a look back at her teenage years. Her wedding to Russell Brand changes a lot for her personally, so she wants to look back on her youth.
Teenage Dream was released for download in the United States on July 23, 2010 . The single CD was released on September 3, 2010. The song was used by the TV station ProSieben with modified text for several jingles with the motto We love to entertain you .
composition
Teenage Dream is a mid-tempo love song with a powerful beat that follows the retro sound of Perry's previous single California Gurls . The media classifies the song as one of the genres of electro pop and power pop . The song, written in four-four time and in B flat major , has a tempo of 116 beats per minute . The progression of the song is B ♭ –B ♭ 2 – B ♭. Perry's vocal range goes from B ♭ 3 to F5. Teenage Dream is set up in the classic verse - chorus mode, with a bridge between the second and third choruses. Perry stated that the song is about recapturing the confusing, exciting feelings of first love: “When you're growing up and you're falling in love for the first time, it's such an amazing feeling that sometimes you can't recycle again later on in your life. For me, being in love again now, it's kind of the same feeling "( Eng .:" When you grow up and are in love for the first time, it is such an amazing feeling that you sometimes do not experience again in later life who is just in love again currently has the same kind of feeling ").
Reviews
Teenage Dream received both positive and negative reviews. For Eberhard Dobler from Laut.de , Perry sounds quite grown up and serene in this song. “Katy Perry wants to sound grown up, of course - and the synth-humping title track at the beginning of the CD does that. Like the rest of the record, the number seems pretty clarified: Instead of celebrating the popsause right away, the guitar licks are set carefully for the time being, ”said the critic in the context of the album review of Teenage Dream . Mai Maerten from Plattentests.de wrote that most of the songs on the album “puck out of boxing at a tolerable mid-tempo. Katy's voice sounds hollow, echoing and absent, another consequence of the electro craze ”. Albert Ranner also gave the album a negative review and wrote about Teenage Dream : “In retrospect, the very nice harbingers of California gurls and Teenage dream are no different from blenders who promise a lively summer album, but ultimately from their own For Billboard Magazine's Craig Marks , Teenage Dream is “a textbook-like summer single whose ingenious pop hookline is shaped by Perry's talent for memorable lyrics and her frothy, gum-chewing role”. PopMatters' Steve Leftridge considers it one of the better songs on Perry's album: "The title track and second single is even better, thanks in large part to Katy's voluptuous vocals in the chorus, which rises above a dirty, poppy chorus."
The Rolling Stone lists Teenage Dream at number 4 of the 50 best songs of 2010 . Billboard listed the song as the # 2 best song of the 2010s in January 2015 .
Music video
The music video for Teenage Dream was filmed in Santa Barbara in July 2010. The director of the video was Yoann Lemoine . The video shows Perry with her boyfriend (played by Josh Kloss) in a car. After that, Perry is at a party with friends. The final scene shows Perry and her boyfriend kissing underwater.
In an interview with YouTube , Perry said:
“It [the music video] is completely different from California Gurls . With Teenage Dream you get to see a very vulnerable side ... I put so much fewer layers of makeup on . I had to play it with a boy, which was very traumatic because I was mean to him ... I was the one who yelled 'Cut' because I said I couldn't play this. But I know it's a job. Russell [her then-husband] and I understand what our job is. "
