background

Katy Perry let her fans vote for the fourth single from the album Teenage Dream on her Twitter page . ET won the fans' vote. Perry announced that "ET" would be released as a single in February 2011, according to EMI record company .

reception

  • The Los Angeles Times wrote, "[Perry can] stuttering a hip-hop - Diva on by Rihanna mimic influenced ET, and convince the listener that it fits her perfectly. And like a glove! Whatever person is under Perry's wigs and costumes is unimportant to their music. The way in which she creates herself is the goal and core of her art. "
  • Allmusic wrote, “[Perry] reproduces with 'ET' Ryan Tedder's glassy, robotic strangeness, but impressively avoidsimitating Lady Gaga , who is simply too abstract for the blunt Katy - but these are just accents that add to her style and One of the Boys themepalette can be added. "
  • According to BBC Music , “on the rave- influenced quasi- ballad ET, you can see a certain tendency towards simple, somber thoughts that present a new Katy Perry, one very different from the one that is unbidden in some columns about the Show business appears. "
  • Entertainment Weekly wrote, “She tends tomarrythe best of'80s leotard womenswear, as shown on the gloriously flawed return [named at the time] ET - imagine Lita Ford going through Trent Reznors Nightmares creep, like in the movie Inception ”.
  • The Slant Magazine said that "on the inscrutable [song] ET Perry compares her lover (positive?) With an alien and Dr. Luke grabs the background music of tATu's song All the Things She Said , presumably in recognition of his predecessors in the field of exploitative dance floor trash ”.
  • Sputnikmusic stated: “I understand that ET is supposed to be“ space-wise ”, which is expressed in cheesy synths and cool sound effects, but from the lyrics the song seems to be more“ Alien Sex Files 3 ”than Solaris . I really like your [Perry's] attempt, with songs that smoke with bulkiness and dark, gloomy feelings, songs like Who am I Living For? and Pearl to be a more serious artist, but those are songs that would still work better in the hands of a more versatile singer. "
  • The Billboard magazine wrote " ET [...] [is] with an Electro -Einschlag like Boom Boom Pow and texts in which Perry treated vergiftetere relationships difficult, both the music and lyrically. […] But this new depth shouldn't come as a surprise, because despite all the pomp and all the watermelon costumes, Perry is above all a skilful and personal pop songwriter . And Teenage Dream shows carefully selected spots that she is ready to grow up. "
  • Pop Matters wrote "[...] Songs like ET or Circle the Drain are not strong, exciting, clever, or musically interesting enough to give Perry any form of true credibility as a serious artist who actually has something to say."
  • The Now magazine wrote "These two properties [Perry's sex appeal and silly, exaggerated modest charm] are not, resulting in the largest part of the album in balance to embarrassing songs like ET (Futuristic Lover) and Peacock."

Music video

Emergence

The music video for ET was shot in spring 2011 by music video director and photographer Floria Sigismondi . She is known for “dark, feminine” music videos, which is evident in her work for Christina Aguilera and Marilyn Manson . In an interview with NRJ's French radio show Le 6/9 on March 10, 2011, Katy Perry said she was delighted with her collaboration with Sigismondi. The video premiered on March 31, 2011 on the music portals Vevo and MTV .

content

Then the music starts to ET , and Kanye West can be seen in a short scene in a Sputnik . Katy Perry represents an alien , glides through space and develops a humanoid appearance before she lands on earth , which is covered with sparks. There are also repeated short scenes in which you can see a dying deer . On Earth, Katy Perry accidentally comes across a broken robot (resembling a spaceman) who becomes a naked man (played by Shaun Ross) after being kissed by Katy Perry. Katy Perry has the feet of a gazelle . Meanwhile, West is shown again and you can see him flying through space in a Sputnik. The music video also alludes to a probable future as Katy Perry finds a box that contains the skeleton of a pigeon and sunglasses that Katy Perry later wears in the music video.

During the music video, Katy Perry wears various extravagant and futuristic outfits and facial make-up , including blue-pink make-up , cat- and reptile-like eyes and curved horns over her head. Willa Paskin of New York Magazine compared her appearance to "a detailed, weird, colorful rainbow kabuki ". She also made comparisons with Lady Gaga's appearance in the music video for Born This Way , the Queen of Sheba, Ziggy Stardust (the alter ego of British musician David Bowie ) and the fictional characters Lara Croft , Padmé Amidala and Jadzia Dax .
