Born This Way ( German  born in this way is) a song from the second studio album by American singer Lady Gaga , which was written by her and Jeppe Breum Laursen, and Gaga, Paul Blair, Fernando Garibay was produced and Jeppe Breum Laursen . The song released on February 11, 2011 is the first single from their second studio album Born This Way , which was released on May 23, 2011.

background

While touring the world for her Monster Ball Tour in 2010, she began developing ideas for her second studio album, Born This Way . The first song written was the title track Born This Way , which she supposedly wrote in ten minutes in Liverpool . Lady Gaga described the process as an Immaculate Conception . She explained, “I wrote the song in ten minutes ... and it's a completely magical song with a message. And after I wrote the song, the gates opened and the other songs just came. ” Perez Hilton was one of the first to hear the track. He commented, " Born This Way is a very 'gay song', but it's also a song that can relate to anyone, us outsiders, us freaks, all of us who feel different." White Shadow, one of the producers of the song stated that Gaga came up with the idea and topic behind the song. “We recorded it in many parts of the world, on the streets wherever it was possible. It sounds like it reads, but not like you think until you hear the song for the first time, ”he said of the song. Gaga wanted to record her own freedom song and explained the inspiration behind the song to Billboard :

“I want to write my 'this-is-who-the-fuck-I-am' anthem, but I don't want it to be hidden behind poetic magic and metaphors. I want it to be an attack, an attack on the question, because I think that especially in today's music everything is somehow blurred and the message is hidden in a lyric game. Back in the early 90s when Madonna, En Vogue, Whitney Houston and TLC were making music for women, the gay community and all excluded communities, the lyrics and melodies were very poignant and very spiritual and I said, 'That's the kind of thing Record I have to make. This is the record that will shake up the industry. ' It's not about the title. It's not about production. It's about the song. Anyone could sing 'Born This Way'. It could have been someone. "

On the 43rd episode of her internet video series Transmission Gagavision , Gaga told the interviewer that the greatest experience while writing Born This Way was how to put her insecurities behind and become more confident. “'Born This Way' is what I am. An artist in a constancy between half-fantasy / half-reality in all times, ”she added.

On February 8, 2011 , Lady Gaga tweeted the French words "Trois Jours" ("Three Days"), along with an image that is supposed to represent the cover image of Born This Way . Charlie Amter of The Hollywood Reporter described the cover art as "a return to the classic cover art of the 1980s ( Missing Persons , Roxy Music or Duran Duran ) or the 1970s". The cover image for Born This Way is in black and white . One sees a naked Lady Gaga showing three of her tattoos. Tanner Stransky from Entertainment Weekly praised the cover image: "You can finally see Lady Gaga on the cover image happier than with her public appearance." Archana Ram from the same publication immediately noticed the very strong resemblance to the cover image of Kylie Minogue's single 2 Hearts (2007) on. Nicole Eggenberger from OK! said: “The cover image shows Lady Gaga's true identity. She shows her wild side again and proudly shows off her glamor with her make-up! ”Leah Collins of Dose thinks the tattoos and heavy make-up are an ironic reference to the title Born This Way . About.com's Bill Lamb said, "The way Lady Gaga shows herself between male and female on the cover art goes back to classics like David Bowie's cover art on Young Americans ."

After receiving the 2010 MTV Video Music Award for Video of the Year for “ Bad Romance ”, Gaga sang a few lines from the song: “I'm beautiful in my way, 'cause God makes no mistakes; I'm on the right track, baby, I was born this way. " As a "Christmas present", Gaga announced on Twitter on New Years Day 2011 that the release dates for the song and album Born This Way would be February 13th and May 23rd, respectively. However, the song was released two days earlier, on February 11th. Before the song was published, Gaga posted the full text of Born This Way on Twitter at the end of January .

criticism

Responses to the song have been generally positive, although The Hollywood Reporter and Time took the initial response as mixed. Meghan Casserly from Forbes gave the song a positive rating: “ Born This Way has perhaps the biggest message of any song. The message of Born This Way and the title as an anthem speaks to every person on the planet ”. Popjustice gave Born This Way a positive review, comparing it to Madonna's Deeper and Deeper , Express Yourself and Vogue .

The Guardian rated Born This Way as “a disco that's stranger than its meat dress .” Artistdirect's Rick Florinogave Born This Way a 5 out of 5 stars and described it as “a modern pop classic,” and commented “Nobody can create a melody like Lady Gaga and the refrain of Born This Way shows the mood of their monsters ”. People rated Born This Way as "the club anthem that expresses all of Gaga's vocal skills". Billboard gave Born This Way a positive review: “It's a great dance floor anthem that the crowds will love. Lady Gaga can only be praised this time. Her strong singing and the message that Born This Way brings acrosswith her sexuality surpass anything ”. Nick Levine of Digital Spy gave Born This Way 5 out of 5 stars and described it as a "life anthem in a fantastic pop song". Sal Cinquemani from Slant Magazine also gave Born This Way a positive rating: "The message and the song are so unique that it will leave a positive impression on everyone."

Rolling Stone's Rob Sheffield gave the song four out of five stars and said that “ Born This Way sums up the whole complex Gaga myth, all of her political and Catholic fears, and“ smeared lipstick ”into one brilliant pop song. [The song is] an event, a statement, the most anticipated song in the history of record music, or at least since Britney's Hold It Against Me . "

Yahoo! Music criticized Born This Way on the grounds: "Overrated, Born This Way will not promise many fans what they expect from Lady Gaga". Similarities between Born This Way and When Love Takes Over , Waterfalls and three Madonna songs: Express Yourself , Ray of Light and Vogue were also noted. Annie Yuan of The Hollywood Reporter described the song as "a landmark pop anthem". Spin's Kevin O'Donnell gave Born This Way a mixed rating, comparing the song and its message to Michael Jackson's Black or White . He went on to say, “There's so much hype surrounding the release of Born This Way that you think Lady Gaga is releasing a song as epic as A Day in the Life by The Beatles or Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen . Imagine what she would have shown up with if she had written Born This Way for more than 10 minutes . "

Fans and critics noted similarities with Madonna's Express Yourself . Some critics think the similarities to Express Yourself destroy the real impact of Born This Way . Commenting on the imitative nature of Born This Way, Neil McCormick of the Daily Telegraph commented, “[Actually] Born This Way is a newer version of Madonna's Express Yourself , with a touch of Vogue , but that's too much Madonna for someone trying to establish themselves as the new Madonna with their own identity ”. However, Gaga said on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno that she had received an email from Madonna in which Madonna expressed her sympathy for the song. A few days later, CNN reported that, according to her management, Madonna never sent an email to Lady Gaga. Two months later, when Gaga was interviewed by NME magazine, she commented on the comparison with Express Yourself :

“If you compare the songs, only the progression is similar. Incidentally, it is the same one that has played a role in disco music for 50 years. Just because I'm the first artist in 25 years to use it on Top 40 radio doesn't mean I'm a plagiarist, it just means I'm pretty damn smart. Sorry. "

Born This Way has also been criticized in Asia and Latin America for allegedly showing signs of racism against their cultures in the lyrics to Born This Way . The Latino groups MECha and Chicanos Unidos Arizona said the lyrics contain the words " Chola " and " Orient " to tarnish the Latino and Asian cultures, "these are the signs of racism against our cultures".

Radio stations in Malaysia decided to censor certain lines from Born This Way , such as "No matter gay, straight or bi, lesbian, transgendered life, I'm on the right track, baby." In order not to violate the strict moral laws of Violating Malaysia. Instead, only an incomprehensible murmur can be heard in the radio version. Speaking of censorship in an interview with Google, Gaga said, “I want to say to all of these young people in Malaysia who want these lines to be played on the radio that it is your job, your duty as young people to make it happen that your voices are heard. "She added:" You have to do everything you can. "
