Lady Gaga, the singer of the song

Poker Face is an electro-pop song that American singer Lady Gaga wrote with RedOne and released in 2008. It comes from Lady Gaga's debut album The Fame and was the second release (after Just Dance ). The song brought the singer the international breakthrough and reached the top of the charts in numerous countries around the world, including the USA, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and many European countries. It set a new record for download sales in the UK and Germany. With over 9.8 million units sold, Poker Face is one of the best-selling songs of all time.

At the Grammy Awards 2010 the song won the Grammy in the category Best Dance Recording , in the main categories Song of the Year and Record of the Year it was nominated.

Emergence

Poker Face was written by RedOne and Lady Gaga . As musicians, alongside Gaga as a singer, RedOne, Dave Russel, Robert Orton and Gene Grimaldi, who are also known as sound engineers . RedOne was the producer.

Musical style

Poker Face is a dance-pop song and stylistically followed the first single Just Dance . Poker Face uses a clean chorus sound with a pop hookline from Just Dance and a bigger dance-pop-oriented beat from their next single LoveGame . Kerrie Mason of Billboard Magazine wrote that the composition of Poker Face had a background in the urban , hip hop and underground scenes of New York . The song contains a sample from the chorus by Ma Baker ("Ma, Ma, Ma, Ma") by the German-produced group Boney M.

content

Lady Gaga told Fox News Channel that the main idea behind the song was sex and bisexuality. In an interview with the British Daily Star , however, she stated: “It's about different things. I play, but I've also met a lot of guys who just wanted a sexually oriented relationship with me, so I wrote a song that my friends and guys like too. ” Gaga told Rolling Stone that the song was all about Sex. In the same interview, Lady Gaga was also asked about the meaning of the line “bluffin 'with my muffin”; Lady Gaga explained that this line was a metaphor for her vagina :

“Obviously, 'my pussy's poker face!' I took this line from another song called Blueberry Kisses that I wrote but never published. It's about a girl who sings for her boyfriend about how she wants to enrich him sexually. I ended up using this line for Poker Face . ([Gaga sings]: 'Blueberry kisses, the muffin man misses them kisses'.) "

In terms of content, Poker Face is about sexual innuendos and seductions. After the hook “Can't read my Poker Face” the background singer sings “He's got me like nobody”, then Lady Gaga sings “She's got me like nobody”. Lady Gaga explained in an interview that this line is intended to lead the listener to confuse love and gender, she wants to confuse the listener with it. During a concert on her Fame Ball Tour in Palm Springs , California on April 11, 2009, the star said the song was related to her personal experiences with bisexuality. The idea behind the song is to have a relationship with a man, but still be interested in women and prefer them. So the man in the lyrics has to read her poker face to understand what she is thinking. In another interview, Gaga stated that Poker Face was written as a pop song and pays tribute to her " rock 'n' roll friends".

Reviews

The Times ' Priya Ellan named Poker Face one of the best moments on the album when referring to The Fame . The BBC called Poker Face a "fantastic single". About.com's Bill Lamb said, " Poker Face will have success on the radio, but it would be better suited for a dark, sweaty late-night party atmosphere." In 2011, Colin Larkin reviewed Poker Face as the best Lady Gaga song Earth. He said, “Lady Gaga refreshed the pop world in the United States and the United Kingdom at the best time. Thanks to Poker Face everyone is waiting for Lady Gaga's next step. " Billboard magazine's Chris Williams also praised the song:" The song has it all, 80s-inspired synthesizers, robotic vocals, a warm, sunny hook in the chorus that is many times better is as on the first single ( Just Dance ) (...) Gaga plays with her cards, and she plays right, poker is thus another cheesy hit by Lady Gaga. "

Andy Downing of The Chicago Tribune said the song represented and inspired their Fame Ball Tour . Evan Sawdey of PopMatters.com described Poker Face and Paparazzi as follows: "Both songs are based on the successful Just Dance , so Lady Gaga has revolutionized electronic music by making it suitable for the public again." Rolling Stone magazine compared the acoustic version of the Song that Gaga played on her The Fame Ball Tour with music by Amy Winehouse and called the acoustic version of Poker Face "bluesy". Erika Hobert of the New Times Broward-Palm Beach newspaper described the song as "trashy Europop ".

Chart success

In the US, Poker Face was released in September 2008 when its predecessor Just Dance was only in the charts for a few weeks. It wasn't until this song rose to # 1 that Poker Face became a hit. The jump to the top of the charts in the USA was preceded by an appearance by Lady Gaga in the eighth season of American Idol . Although it stayed at # 1 for just a week, it was the second highest-grossing song of the year in the States. After Christina Aguilera , Lady Gaga was the second performer to make it to the top of the charts with her first two singles. Both songs sold more than six million times in the USA alone, making Lady Gaga the first female singer, according to Nielsen Soundscan, who was able to surpass this mark with two songs in the USA.

In Australia and New Zealand , the song was released in late 2008 and still reached the top position in 2008, which it maintained for eight and ten weeks respectively. Even after it was published in Europe at the beginning of 2009, it quickly took first place in most countries. In Germany it took the top position for 13 weeks, in Austria for 12 weeks and in Switzerland for eight weeks. It was the most successful song of the year in all three countries. In Great Britain, Germany and Switzerland, the song also stayed in the charts for over 70 weeks.

In Germany, with 500,000 units sold , Poker Face was the song that had been sold most often as a download until then. It was awarded double platinum . In Canada it even went platinum eight times, five times in the USA and three times in Switzerland. Music video

The Poker Face music video was directed by Ray Kay and Anthony Mandler . It was filmed in bwin's luxurious villa “PokerIsland” on Ibiza . The company provided the location and was able to place its products in the form of play equipment to compensate . The music video had its world premiere on October 22nd, 2008. At the beginning, Lady Gaga climbs out of the pool of the villa, she wears a black mask and a black full body elotard . Her two dogs are sitting at the edge of the pool. She throws away her mask and begins to sing. In this scene, Gaga wears a shiny metallic sticker on her left cheek. Faded-in scenes show the singer in the turquoise light dancing with several men by the pool. At a wild party in the villa, every dancer can try their own luck at strip poker . The mood and excitement rise, kisses and intimate touches are exchanged. Afterwards Lady Gaga sits by the pool again with her characteristic Pop-Music-Will-Never-Be-Low-Brow -sunglasses and sings the hook line “I won't tell you that I love you”. At the end a long shot of Lady Gaga's face can be seen singing her “Mum-mum-mum-ma” hook with serious facial expressions.

In the 19th episode of Gaga's own series, Transmission Gagavision , Lady Gaga explained the main idea behind the Poker Face music video . She said: “I knew I wanted to be sexy, so I thought about not wearing pants because that's sexy […] and I knew I wanted to be futuristic, so I thought of shoulder pads because that's my thing . ”In some versions of the song, the words“ muffin ”(a slang term for the female vulva ),“ Russian Roulette ”and“ gun ”have been censored (a beep sound appears). On June 21, 2009, the music video won the Best International Artist Video category at the MuchMusic Video Awards 2009. At the MTV Video Music Awards 2009 , the music video won the categories Video of the Year , Best New Artist , Best Female Video and Best Pop Video nominated. The music video for her song Paparazzi received five other nominations, making Lady Gaga the Beyoncé record for most nominations.

Appearances

Lady Gaga appeared with the song on numerous shows, such as the AOL Sessions , in the Cherrytree House of her record company Interscope Records or at the MTV sessions. Critics called her appearance at American Idol on April 1, 2009 "alien disco performance art". Cortney Harding of Billboard magazine wrote, "[It was] Gaga's crowning TV moment ... showing that she is a true and powerful pop star." The song became an integral part of Lady Gaga's stage program. At the Grammy Awards 2010 Lady Gaga sang the song with Elton John .
