Born This Way is the second studio album by the American singer Lady Gaga . The album was released worldwide on May 23, 2011. Musically, the album is influenced by pop music of the 1980s and 1990s, but several other musical genres have also been incorporated, including the use of elements from heavy metal and opera . Within the first week of sales, the album sold almost two million copies.
Background and development
In March 2010, Gaga announced that she had started working on new material for Born This Way ; she added that she "had already written the core." Three months later, she said that she strongly believed she had the album ready. During an interview, she said, “It came so quickly. I've been working on it for months, and I strongly believe it's finished now. Some artists take years. Not me. I write music every day. "
In the final quarter of 2010, Troy Carter, Gaga's manager, and producer RedOne gave their personal opinions on the album. Carter stated that they have just started auditioning the album for the label. He said, “We're very excited about Born This Way . We're starting to play a little for people and get a feel for it and she did an amazing job, a really incredible job. It's not about where I go for business, it's more about where she goes creatively because, to tell the truth, we built the business around her creative infrastructure and the business that was built is unique to Lady Gaga. "
Lady Gaga announced the album's title at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards in September 2010 after winning the Video of the Year category . She sang a few lines from the chorus of the song of the same name: “I'm beautiful in my way, 'cause God makes no mistakes; I'm on the right track, baby, I was born this way. "
Concept and artwork
Gaga announced on November 26th 2010, during the Monster Ball Tour in Gdańsk, Poland, that the album could have up to 20 tracks and promised that it would be the album of the decade. She added that the album was completely ready. She also stated that the album will be like "bad kids go to church and have fun at a high level". In an interview with Vogue it was confirmed that 17 tracks have been recorded for the new album, but only 14 will make it onto the standard edition of the album. The remaining 3 were originally supposed to appear on an exclusive Target Deluxe Edition of the album, but on March 9, it was reported that Gaga ended her partnership with Target on the grounds that the company was donating money to an anti-gay organization.
Speaking of the album in an interview with Newsbeat, Gaga said: “The album is a combination of electronic music with big, epic, dare I say metal or rock 'n' roll, pop, anthemic style melodies with really pounding dance beats . It's done and everything, it's just a detailed work. It's like the post-operative phase of the album. I've already done the full heart surgery. I think lyrically this album is more poetic. It's really written by the fans, they really wrote it for me because every night they put so much into me. So I wrote it for her. Born This Way is about my little monsters and me, Mother Monster. "
On April 17, 2011, Gaga tweeted her selection for the album cover, which shows Gaga fused with a motorcycle. Gaga's name doesn't appear on the album cover - the only text is the album's chrome-plated name. The album cover received negative reactions from some fans and critics. Sean Michaels of The Guardian said of the cover: "... it looks more like a cheap Photoshop work than the most anticipated album of the year." Magic horns; instead, a mutated motorcycle with Gaga's arms and head and cheap, chrome-plated font. ”He also pointed out several messages from fans expressing their dislike for the cover on Lady Gaga's official forum. The cover of the special edition was released on the same day. It shows Gaga's head from the Standard Edition. Neither the words special nor deluxe appear anywhere on the album as Gaga doesn't like them.
Music and lyrics
Themes and influences
In terms of musical composition, Born This Way is considered a notable departure from Gaga's earlier works. Unlike much of their previous albums, which consisted of elements from mostly electro-pop , house and dance-pop , Born This Way binds a wider range of elements of various genres such as opera , heavy metal , rock 'n' roll , europop , and mariachi Disco with one. Born This Way also features a wider variety of instruments and musical styles, for example, in the first single Born This Way of the same name, an organ can be heard at the end of the song alongside Gaga's voice. Gaga found inspiration in Gregorian chant , a prominent feature in Bloody Mary , in which a male choir sings her name several times. The songs Hair and The Edge of Glory differ from the rest of the album in that a saxophone can be heard. It was performed by Clarence Clemons , who was a prominent member of the E Street Band . In several interviews, Lady Gaga stated that she was mainly inspired by Madonna , Whitney Houston and Bruce Springsteen . Other signs of musical influence come from Iron Maiden , Kiss , Queen , TLC , Pat Benatar and En Vogue .
In the months leading up to Born This Way's release , Gaga characterized her new music as "something so much deeper than a wig or lipstick or a [damn] meat dress." Akon said she will take music to a higher level. The album contains references to several religious figures of Christianity , especially Judas Iscariot , Mary Magdalene and Jesus of Nazareth . Several songs on the album relate to social issues, including Arizona Immigration Law. Other themes on the album include individualism, equality, freedom, sexuality and feminism.
Songs and lyrics
The album begins with Marry the Night , a tribute to New York City. It's a dance-pop record and draws influences from disco , techno and funk . The next song, the theme song Born This Way , is about the fact that everyone is equal, regardless of skin color, sexuality or religion, and that everyone can fulfill their dream. The song, which has been compared to Madonna's Express Yourself , was written by Gaga and Jeppe Laursen and was produced by Lady Gaga, Jeppe Laursen, Fernando Garibay and DJ White Shadow. The third track on the album, Government Hooker , contains elements of opera music.
The fourth song and the second single on the album is Judas . Gaga confirmed that the song was influenced by the biblical Judas Iscariot . According to Popjustice, the song is superficially a song about being betrayed (" even after three times he betrays me ") and revenge (" bring him down, I'll bring him down down, a king with no crown, a king with no crown ”), but one is attracted several times by the horror:“ I'm just a holy fool, oh baby he's so cruel, but I'm still in love with Judas, baby ”. In the break of the song, with the text “In the most Biblical sense, I am beyond repentance. 'Fame hooker', 'prostitute wench', 'vomits her mind' ... But in the cultural sense I just speak in future tense. Judas kiss me if open, or wear an ear condom next time ” , Gaga speaks about the ability to redeem oneself in relation to the traditional notions of what a woman should be. The song is, essentially, a dance-pop and electro-pop song, with influences from industrial music and a breakdown that includes influences from techno and dubstep .
The fifth song on the album is Americano , a mariachi song with techno and disco influences. The Americano text is bilingual, consisting of Spanish and English. The song was written by Gaga in response to the Arizona Immigration Act, Arizona SB 1070. The sixth song, the promotional single Hair , is a song about expressing freedom through hair. The song has a dance-pop melody, although the song draws influences from rock / heavy metal music bands and artists such as Bruce Springsteen , Iron Maiden and Kiss ; The contributor is E-Street-Band member Clarence Clemons , who plays the saxophone. The seventh song, Scheiße , contains a fantasy language modeled on the German language and is a message of feminism. Bloody Mary is the eighth song on Born This Way and has a slightly slower tempo. The song contains numerous religious references and a trance-influenced melody. Bad Kids , the following title, contains 1980s synth-pop influences and a disco beat similar to that of Donna Summer , as well as rock / electric guitars.
Highway Unicorn (Road to Love) is the tenth track on the album, a dance-pop song, which contains influences from Bruce Springsteen and a powerful drum kit and synthesizer. The eleventh track, Heavy Metal Lover , is an electropop song with slow trance elements that uses synthesizers. After Heavy Metal Lover comes Electric Chapel , a heavy metal-influenced pop song that has been compared to Madonna. The thirteenth song on the album is Yoü and I , a rock ballad written by Lady Gaga and produced by Robert John "Mutt" Lange and Lady Gaga. Queen member Brian May can be heard as guitarist. The fourteenth song on the album is The Edge of Glory , the third single from the album. The song also includes a saxophone solo by Clarence Clemons.
reception
criticism
On the Metacritic side , the album received a rating of 71% ("generally favorable", "essentially positive"), based on 32 reviews in English. American magazine Rolling Stone awarded four stars out of five and praised Gaga's singing and musical style. Bill Lamb of About.com gave the album five stars out of five and wrote in his report: “Born This Way begins and ends with near perfection. Dan Martin of NME gave the album 8 out of 10 and said, “Gaga doesn't know when to hold back - and that's a damn good thing.” Allmusic editor Stephen Thomas Erlewine gave the album three and a half stars out of five and praised it Gaga's “sensitivity” and “sure instinct” for composing. Words of praise also came from the English music magazine New Music Express and the US magazines Spin and Entertainment Weekly .
James Reed of the American newspaper The Boston Globe does not see a great success in Born This Way . He writes: “For a self-promotional artist like Lady Gaga, Born This Way is disappointing. Even depressing. "
Some journalists wrote bad reviews. Karim Chughtai from the e-zine laut.de rated the album Born This Way rather negatively with two out of five possible stars. He compares the media hype of Lady Gaga with that of Michael Jackson , Madonna and boy groups: “Lady Gaga understands the staging. She lands performance acts instead of real hits. In the collective memory, this glaringly produced Glam-It product with artistic claim remains in any case, but not a single song that shapes or even shakes contemporary musical history as in the case of 'Thriller'. "
Sebastian Fasthuber from the weekly newspaper Falter has a similar opinion : “For a supposedly clever architect, the album […] is simply poorly built. 14 songs and a good 60 minutes long Lady Gaga struggles without a break. Then she gives up and ends up slapping it with a faceless open-plan disco remix of 'Born This Way'. That wouldn't have happened to Madonna. ”The music journalist Christian Schachinger from the Austrian daily Der Standard received little praise for the album:“ Musically, Born This Way offers the well-known, cheaply made disco nonsense with musical refrains. You can hear Eurodance pounders who are heavily coiffed up in techno for those uncool dance floors that Lady Gaga would never step on privately. "
Commercial win
Born This Way became a huge worldwide success. The album has sold around 8 million times so far.
The album debuted at number 1 on the Billboard 200 with 1,108,000 copies sold, Gaga's second number one album and the highest number of copies sold in a week since 50 Cents The Massacre (2005), which sold 1,141,000 copies in the first Week. It is the seventeenth album that sold over a million copies in a week. Gaga is the fifth woman to do this, after Whitney Houston ( The Bodyguard Soundtrack , 1992), Britney Spears ( Oops! ... I Did It Again , 2000), Norah Jones ( Feels Like Home , 2004) and Taylor Swift ( Speak Now , 2010). Amazon sold 440,000 copies in the first two days at a price of $ 0.99. 662,000 copies were sold digitally in the first week, the largest amount in the history of the charts. After just a week, the album became the eighth best-selling digital album in the US. To date, the album has sold 2,100,000 copies in the United States.
The album debuted at number 1 in Ireland and Sweden. In France, the album also debuted at number 1 with 55,050 copies sold. In the UK, the album sold 215,639 copies in its first week and debuted at number 1, the highest number of copies sold in a week that year. Born This Way sold more copies that week than the top 10 combined. A total of 854,000 albums have been sold in the UK to date.
The album debuted at number 1 in Australia and New Zealand and went platinum in both countries in the first week. It is their second number one album in both countries, after The Fame Monster . Born This Way sold 184,000 copies in its first week in Japan and debuted at the top of the Oricon charts. Since then it has been awarded double platinum for 500,000 copies sold. According to Universal Music Russia, Born This Way sold more than 30,000 copies in the first two days in Russia. Within the first week of sales, the album sold almost two million copies.
tour
On April 27, 2012, Lady Gaga began her Born This Way Ball tour in Seoul , South Korea . The first European concerts were announced towards the end of April. Since some concerts take place in conservative countries, there were frequent demonstrations against Lady Gaga. As a result, the concert in Jakarta , Indonesia , for example , was canceled.
