(2014)

The The Born This Way Ball was the third world tour of US singer Lady Gaga , following her second studio album Born This Way . The tour consisted of a total of 120 concerts in Asia, Australia, Europe (summer 2012), followed by Latin America (end of the year). North America was the end of 2013, but the last 21 concerts there had to be canceled due to a hip injury.

Background of the tour

Gaga during her appearance on "Americano"

During the release of the song Judas , the second single from her album Born This Way , Lady Gaga announced that she was planning a tour for 2012 that would also visit Latin America and other countries where she has never given a concert . In November 2011, producer DJ White Shadow announced that Gaga was "preparing for the next tour". He also announced that she was not only preparing for the tour, but also recording songs for a new album.

A poster of the tour was released on February 7, 2012, and Billboard's Ray Waddell called it a "bizarre poster that made the ball a tasteless, medieval-hits-the-80s kingdom". It shows Lady Gaga, who looks down from the sky with dark clouds. It also includes the colors turquoise and purple. She is also shown with a cloak keyboard and her dancers at a castle. The day after the first concert dates for Asia were announced immediately, on February 15, 2012 the dates for Australia followed.

The European concert dates were announced in April 2012, when the German musician Zedd was announced as the opening act for Asia and Lady Gaga's long-term partners, Lady Starlight and The Darkness , for the remaining countries.

Lady Gaga in Hong Kong

The first dates for South America were announced at the beginning of August 2012, followed by the dates for North America.

In early 2013, Lady Gaga had to cancel her remaining 21 concerts in North America because she has a hip injury that she had to treat surgically. The appointments were not made up because Lady Gaga's hip injury was more serious than expected.

development

Lady Gaga herself describes her tour as "Electro-Metal Pop-Opera". The first rehearsals started a month later. In February 2012 she announced to her fans via Twitter that she would publish a draft for her stage design for the “Born This Way Ball”. A short time later, she published a draft that came from herself and the House of Gaga . A short time later, she “tweeted”: “I'm so excited. The house has been working so hard, we can't wait for you to see it !! Love you little monsters, have the time of your life. "(I'm so excited. The house has been working so hard, we can't wait for you to see it. I love you little monsters, have the time of your life. ) It shows a castle with towers and a long catwalk to communicate with its fans. The area attached to the catwalk is called "The Monster Pit" by Lady Gaga. The “Monster Pit” is only for concert goers who, according to their own statements, have waited “day and night” and are among the first to arrive. The size of the pit depends on the concert hall. The first to arrive in front of the hall wins a meet and greet with Lady Gaga and receives the "Monster Pit Key", a kind of award for the long wait. More fans are selected every night, who then have the opportunity to get to know them personally.

Commercial popularity

The tickets have had enormous commercial success in Asia and Australia. Shortly after the sales release, the tickets were already sold out. As a result, nine more concerts in Australia were planned. An estimated 6000 tickets became available in Hong Kong, but they were sold out within three hours. Here, too, three more concerts were planned due to the enormous crowd.

The tour is also extremely popular in Europe. In London, ticket sales began on April 13, 2012; 60 seconds later the concert was sold out, while in Manchester the concert was sold out after ten minutes.

Controversy

Especially in Asia, Lady Gaga experienced many controversial reactions.

South Korea

April 27, 2012 Seoul, South Korea Olympic Stadium Yes, with a minimum age of 18 years.

After a civil organization in South Korea dubbed the concert as “too gay and pornographic ” and as one that “could spoil the youth”, it was mainly conservative Christians who demonstrated against the concert. The concert was also seen as an “advertisement for homosexuality and pornography”. The government classified the concert as "unsuitable for minors" and raised the minimum age to attend the concert to 18 years. 280 of 44,500 cards had to be refunded. On stage, Lady Gaga said: "Your government said my concerts must be from 18 years, so I will make sure that it is appropriate."

In the Philippines , Gaga was particularly criticized for the song Judas in connection with Judas Iscariot , who delivered Jesus to the Romans for crucifixion , and the accompanying video. The protesting citizens called the tour "evil" and "unchristian". Furthermore, it said “[...] She does not deserve the title 'Lady'. A title is given to a unique, decent woman, for example the Mother of God. " After protests by around 500 Christians in front of the concert hall, Lady Gaga said on stage: "I am not a creature of your government", followed by the song Judas , which she played despite censorship warnings.

Indonesia

June 3, 2012 Jakarta, Indonesia Gelora Bung Karno Stadium No. After massive protests and threats of violence, it was decided against a concert.

The Front Pembela Islam managed to prevent the largest concert planned in Asia in Indonesia . Habib Salim Alatasm, a leader of the Pembela Islam Front, said: “It is a victory for the Muslim Indonesian. Thank God we protected ourselves from this kind of devil. ”When the fans asked to move the concert to another city, the organizers said that there was no second hall that could accommodate around 50,000 people.

Thailand

May 25, 2012 Bangkok, Thailand Rajamangala National Stadium Yes, the show was highly acclaimed by the Thai press.

When she arrived in Thailand , Lady Gaga caused a sensation because she had previously tweeted that she intended to buy a “fake Rolex”: “I just landed in Bangkok baby! Ready for 50,000 screaming Thai monsters. I want to get lost in a lady market and buy fake Rolex. ”Thai fans responded with the words:“ We are more civilized than you think ”. The Twitter message was also "disgusting, insulting and bad for the image". Despite this criticism, the concert was consistently praised by the Thai media.
