Dance in the Dark is a song by the American singer Lady Gaga , from her third EP The Fame Monster .

Data

Written by Lady Gaga and co-written and produced by Fernando Garibay , the song was recorded in 2009. Influenced by retro and new wave music , the song was officially released for radio only in Australia, France and as a download on iTunes in Belgium.

Emergence

The song was inspired by an intimate experience of two people alone in the bedroom. Lady Gaga explained that it was a work about a girl who "likes to have sex in the dark because she is embarrassed about her body". She explained that she met women like this while working at the MAC AIDS Fund and that this song is not about freedom, but rather about Gaga understanding these feelings. In the spoken interlude, Gaga mentions various Hollywood stars and fashion icons who lost their lives in a tragic death, such as Marilyn Monroe , Judy Garland and JonBenét Ramsey . Dance in the Dark was originally supposed to be released after Telephone , but due to a dispute with the record company, Alejandro was released as a single instead .

Charts and awards

The song hit the lower chart regions in the UK and on Billboard's Bubbling Under Hot 100 Singles Chart, while it reached the top 30 in Australia, the top 20 in the Czech Republic and the top 10 in Slovakia and Hungary. Lady Gaga sang Dance in the Dark as the opening song for her “The Monster Ball Tour” and at the 2010 BRIT Awards , where she dedicated the performance to designer Alexander McQueen - a close friend - who had committed suicide a few days earlier. The song was nominated for a Grammy for Best Dance Recording at the 2011 Grammy Awards .

composition

The song's interlude quotes celebrities who tragically died, including Marilyn Monroe (right).

The song is influenced by 1980s pop music due to the use of new wave- like synthesizers and often repeated hook lines. A spoken interlude, similar to Madonna's Vogue (1990), is also present. In the spoken interlude, Gaga utters the names of personalities who lost their lives in a tragic death, namely Marilyn Monroe , Judy Garland , Sylvia Plath , JonBenét Ramsey , Lady Diana , Liberace , Stanley Kubrick and Jesus of Nazareth .

According to musicOMH's Michael Hubbard, the song begins with a stuttering introduction and orgasmic moan, followed by Gaga singing the song. On the other hand, the chorus of Dance in the Dark is a harmonic progression from the chords FC-Dm-Bb-FC-Dm-Bb. In an interview with the Los Angeles Times , Gaga stated that the song was about the unrest in you:

“It's a work about a girl who likes to have sex in the dark because she is ashamed of her body. She doesn't want her husband to see her naked. She will be free and she will let her inner animal out, but only when the lights are out. She doesn't feel free without the moon. This text is my way of talking about how I believe women and some men are insecure about themselves. And that is not only the case sometimes, it is not only the case during puberty, it is always the case. "

While working at the MAC AIDS Fund, she realized, like many women her age, not to speak about her thoughts for fear that her partners would stop loving her if they did.

“All of these new things that come into my life change the way I see my intention, but 'Dance in the Dark' specifically is about how I want to live life - but the song is not called 'Dance in the Light '. I'm not a gospel singer trying to convert people. What I'm trying to say is, 'I get it. I feel you, I feel the same as you, and it's OK. ' I hope and pray that I can subliminally inspire some kind of change in a person through the show. They sing 'Dance in the Dark' but they dance and are free, they let it all out. But the songs aren't about freedom, they're about [the fact that] I get it. I feel like you. "

The lyrics of the song refer to vampires in the lines “Run run her kiss is a vampire grin / The moon lights her way while she's howlin 'at him”. Lady Gaga explained that the lines express how people rely on external motivations to deal with internal fears. "She doesn't feel free without the moon," said Gaga.

Appearances

Alexander McQueen, to whom Gaga dedicated her appearance at the 2010 Brit Awards .

Lady Gaga sang Dance in the Dark as the opening song on her "The Monster Ball Tour". The show started with Gaga appearing behind a giant, glowing green laser screen in a futuristic silver jeweled jumpsuit with lightbulbs on it. "She had matching eye make-up and was wearing a mask, and started singing 'Dance in the Dark'," "while dancers, clad in white balaclavas, moved around her." The fabric behind which Gaga was standing was while performance and resembled electrical math .

Lady Gaga sang "Dance in the Dark" at the BRIT Awards on February 16, 2010, at the Earls Court Exhibition Center . The performance was inspired by the early death of her close friend, fashion designer Alexander McQueen . At first she had planned a different form of performance, but she changed the concept at the last minute because she wanted to give McQueen credit. So she chose an acoustic version of her songs Telephone and " Dance in the Dark . She started sitting in front of a piano and announced," This is for Alexander McQueen. " The whole performance was more restrained than her other appearances: The stage was decorated all in white and a statue of Lady Gaga, who wore a piano skirt and the "lobster claw high heels" she wore in the video for Bad , stood on a pedestal Romance had worn. After the acoustic performance of Telephone had finished, she got up from her piano, and the disco groove of Dance in the Dark was heard. she wore a tied bodysuit and a large blown-up wig and went to a huge Keytar and played a techno version of the track. After the show she posted a message on her Twitter account: "Tonight's performance is inspired by our friend. Mask by Phillip Treacy, Sculpture by Nick Knight , Music by Lady Gaga. We miss you."

criticism

Paul Lester of the BBC wrote that the song is "general, machine RnB". Evan Sawdey of PopMatters commented that " Dance in the Dark , along with Monster , are delightful dirty retro workings [...]". About.com's Bill Lamb praised the song, writing:

“An epic, tragic pop song. 'Dance in the Dark' is heavy and brave with a sing-along chorus that is one of the best in Gaga's repertoire. This is my favorite type of pop music because it has many different layers. The beat hits you first, and you can groove to the track by yourself, but the melody politely asks you if you want to change partners before Gaga can easily walk in and blow you into pop heaven. "

Pitchfork Media's Scott Plagenhoef believed that Gaga transformed into Madonna in the song. Edna Gunderson of USA Today called the song "tasteless". Michael Hubbard from MusicOMH praised the song for its "monumental chorus and some Madonna-like spoken-word moments, and this call to a lost member of the royal family: 'You will never fall apart Diana, you're still in our hearts / Never let you fall apart / Together we'll dance in the dark. '"
