Alejandro is a song by the American singer Lady Gaga . It is included on their EP The Fame Monster and was officially released in Germany on July 2nd, 2010. In Sweden it was released as the third single. Even before the official release, Alejandro was able to place himself in the British and Hungarian single charts due to download sales.

The track was produced by RedOne and is not the successor to the single Telephone , as confirmed by Gaga himself. According to critics, the song is heavily influenced by ABBA , Ace of Base, and Madonna .

Background and origin

Alejandro was written by Stefani Germanotta (Lady Gaga) and Nadir Khayat (RedOne), the latter produced the song. It was recorded at FC Walvisch Studios in Amsterdam . Although Lady Gaga's record company preferred the song Dance in the Dark as the third single after Telephone , Alejandro was released as an airplay in the US on April 20, 2010 .

The song falls into the electropop / europop category and has a medium tempo of 99  bpm . It is in B minor , the vocal part has a range from F sharp 0 to A 1 . The intro of the song contains the melody of the piece Csárdás composed by Vittorio Monti .

Reviews

Bill Lamb of the US Internet portal about.com compared the song with Madonna's song La Isla Bonita , only it has a more contemporary sound. MTV's Chris Ryan described the song as "a luscious love song that portrays love as if it's as hot as Mexico" and PopMatters' Evan Sawdey says Lady Gaga's voice sounds like Shakira's in the chorus.

Music video

Lady Gaga hints at a sex scene during her performance of
Alejandro on the Monster Ball Tour .

In January 2010 it was reported that Lady Gaga was holding auditions for Alejandro's music video and would like to see David Walliams and Lara Stone in the video. In an interview with Australian radio station Nova 96.9 , Gaga said that the video will be shot very soon, although it has not yet been determined who will be the director of the video, and that it will not be a sequel to the Telephone music video.

The video was directed by photographer and director Steven Klein , who is best known for his frequent collaborations with Madonna. The nine-minute video was posted on ladygaga.com on June 8, 2010 . She dedicated the video to the gay community, which also explains why the video contains many erotic and homosexual scenes as well as clear allusions to the film Cabaret . There are also numerous allusions to the Catholic Church in the video; so Lady Gaga takes e.g. B. a rosary in her mouth and shows herself as a nun in sexual poses. She also shows the Satan's cross on the nun's dress.

Live performances

Lady Gaga sang Alejandro live on her The Born This Way Ball tour in Helsinki . Inspired by her meat dress, she sat on a meat-look couch.

Alejandro is part of the setlist of the world tour The Monster Ball Tour , with which Lady Gaga traveled from November 2009 to April 2011. She also appeared on May 5, 2010 with this song on American Idol .
