Background and publication

"The Edge of Glory" was written and produced by Lady Gaga, Fernando Garibay and DJ White Shadow. The song was created in January 2011 when Lady Gaga teased her fans with a preview of the lyrics. Stephen Hill from BEM described the song as "phenomenal" after the first listen. Lady Gaga revealed more information about "The Edge of Glory" in an interview with Google . She said the song marked "the last moment on earth, the moment of truth, the moment before one leaves the earth". She said in the interview that she wrote the song shortly after her grandfather died. A day before the planned release , Lady Gaga tweeted that "The Edge of Glory" would be released as a promo single the next day .

The promo single should serve as a countdown to the next studio album Born This Way . Due to the song's rapid success and promotion on iTunes , The Edge of Glory was released as a third single. Instead of "The Edge of Glory", the song " Hair " was released as a promo single on May 16, 2011 .

composition

"The Edge of Glory" is a lively dance-pop and electro-rock number. The song is heavily influenced by synthesizers, smooth jazz and the saxophone solo. It is written in A major and follows the A – ED chord progression in the verse. Gaga's vocal range in this song ranges from A3 to D5. It is interesting that the double dominant B major is used during the bridge .

Critical reception

Rolling Stone magazine's Matthew Perpetua gave the song a positive rating.

“This one sounds crazy in print — it's a massive power ballad with heavy club beats that features Clarence Clemons of the E Street Band wailing on his saxophone - but somehow it all seems totally natural when you actually hear it. There's an element of cheesiness to it, but it's totally captivating and incredibly catchy. If any of these new Gaga tunes demands to be a big fat hit this is it. The inclusion of Clemons is an inspired touch that amplifies the song's Eighties stadium rock vibe, but his (Clemon's) actual performance is amazing and ranks among the best of his career. "

- Matthew Perpetua :

Since the release of "The Edge of Glory," the song has received a lot of fan praise. NME magazine gave the song a positive review.

"It feels like a pop moment without her trying too hard." [They later added] "'The Edge Of Glory' is simple. And it is, quite simply a great pop moment. "
