Shallow (meaning "shallow waters") is a song written by Lady Gaga , Mark Ronson , Andrew Wyatt and Anthony Rossomando for the film A Star Is Born . Parts of the song were included in the first official trailer for the film. On September 27, 2018, the song was released in a duet version by Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper and thus released as the first single from the soundtrack A Star Is Born . As part of the ceremony of the Golden Globe Awards in 2019 was Shallow named best song, as well as part of the Academy Awards in 2019 .

The song was written by Lady Gaga and Mark Ronson , Anthony Rossomando and Andrew Wyatt for A Star Is Born and is the theme song for the film. Singer-songwriter Jackson Maine is a country music superstar in the film, but alcoholism and personal problems threaten to send his career into a downward spiral. His hearing gets weaker and weaker and tinnitus torments him. In a drag club he meets the exceptionally talented singer Ally, who explains to him that she does not sing her own songs because she is not comfortable with them, since almost everyone has told her that although they like the way she sings, but not their appearance. Jackson quickly recognized her great musical talent and enabled Ally, who had almost given up on her dream, to perform during his tour. A passionate love relationship develops between the two. Shallow is the song that means the breakthrough for Lady Gaga in the role of Ally in the film.
Shallow was released in a duet version by Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper on September 27, 2018 , concurrently with a music video showing scenes from the film. Parts of the ballad were already included in the first official trailer for the film. Moreover, it is shallow as the twelfth song on the soundtrack to the film included, which was published on 5 October 2018th

The song is about being happy in a modern world where the female part of the duet longs for change in good times, but fears in bad times. Nevertheless, she plunges bravely into the depths and leaves the shallow water behind. In the chorus it says:

Cooper said the song was about the power to believe in someone. Lady Gaga not only lets herself fall into the text of the song musically, but also said she was more open in her role than ever before: “I let myself go completely and that was the scariest thing I have ever done. "

USA Today's Brian Truitt writes of Shallow , the catchy and dramatic song could be a hit, but especially a karaoke bar favorite.
Rabea Weihser from Zeit Online thinks, as it should be for a good music film, he develops a key song that is both inherent in the scene and independent of the plot: “Tell me something girl, are you happy in this modern world?” Asks he she.
