action

The former Secret Service agent , Frank Farmer, is a security expert who is always employed when the lives of his clients are particularly threatened. So he recognizes an assassin in a parking garage in time, shoots him and saves his protégé's life. Frank is hired for $ 3,000 a week to protect pop singer Rachel Marron, who receives threatening letters. He quickly realizes that security issues around Rachel are being handled very carelessly. Gradually he changes this situation, whereby he has to fight, among other things, against the resistance of his client. Only when Rachel learns that a fan has broken into her house - her advisors had kept this a secret from her for a long time - she reacts shocked and realizes the sense of the tightened security measures.

Rachel and Frank get closer, fall in love and spend a night together. Frank regrets this the next morning: He thinks it is a mistake to get involved in a relationship with his customer, because he is paid as a bodyguard and wants to devote himself exclusively to this activity. Rachel is seriously offended and tries to return the favor in the form of sharp remarks and a demonstrative flirtation with Frank's ex-colleague Portman.

Some time later, the threat from the stranger becomes so serious that Rachel's concerts are canceled. Rachel, her son Fletcher, her sister Nicki and Frank hide in the wilderness in his father's house. When Fletcher is almost killed in an attack there, it turns out that the threat does not come from a crazy fan, but from a professional killer whom the jealous Nicki has hired anonymously. The killer breaks into the house at night and unwittingly kills his own client. After this experience, Rachel and Frank get closer again.

Shortly after Nicki's funeral, the Academy Awards, for which Rachel is nominated, takes place. Frank immediately realizes that his former colleague Portman is the assassin and has hidden a gun in a camera. He catches the bullet in his own body and shoots the murderer. Some time later, Rachel has another bodyguard that Frank recommended to her. At an airport there is an endeavoring friendly goodbye between the two, which Rachel ends with “So let's get it over with” before she disappears into her private jet. Suddenly she brings the machine to a standstill and walks towards Frank, whereupon the two kiss passionately. The last scene shows a conference: a member of parliament is welcomed, Frank watches the room in the background.

Reviews

Roger Ebert wrote in the Chicago Sun-Times of November 25, 1992 that the film was not a love story, but rather a study of the differences in lifestyles between two people: the pop star Rachel Marron and the more normally working Frank Farmer. Ebert wrote that the characters designed by Lawrence Kasdan had a pinch of the cynicism known from the other Kasdan films.

The lexicon of international films found: “Clichéd criminal history as a vehicle for the ambitious confrontation of laconic western ideology with modern star cult. The weak script gains in profile through the close staging and in audience appeal through the attractive cast. "

Remarks

  • A similar film project was planned back in 1976, when Steve McQueen and Diana Ross would play the leading roles. The cancer of McQueen prevented the realization of the project. In 1979 a film adaptation with Ryan O'Neal and Diana Ross was prepared, this time the project failed due to the personal differences between the participants.
  • Whitney Houston's song I Will Always Love You was originally written by Dolly Parton in 1974 and topped the US hit lists in the year the film was released.
  • As a tribute to the originally planned film and especially its leading actor, Kevin Costner had his hair styled for the film exactly as Steve McQueen had worn it in Bullitt .
  • The role of Rachel Marron was originally supposed to be played by Madonna . However, this failed due to personal differences between her and Kevin Costner.
  • In 2012, Alexander Dinelaris' musical adaptation of the film premiered in London . The German-language performance started in November 2015 in the Musical Dome in Cologne .
  • In 2014, the rapper Absztrakkt dedicated a concept album based on the film under the title Bodhiguard , and added sound recordings to some songs.
  • The house that the film character Rachel lives in is in Beverly Hills , dates back to the 1920s and was once inhabited by William Randolph Hearst . It served as the backdrop in The Godfather in 1972 and was inhabited by the film character Woltz (played by John Marley ).
  • Christina Aguilera sang a medley at the 2017 American Music Awards in honor of the movie soundtrack's release 25 years ago .
  • In 2019 it became known that on the black and white movie poster, which also serves as the cover of the VHS and DVD release of the film, leading actor Kevin Costner does not carry leading actress Whitney Houston in his arms, but a female double of the actress.
