I Will Always Love You is a song by American country musician Dolly Parton from 1974, which became a global hit in 1992 in the cover version of Whitney Houston . Houston's version comes from the soundtrack for the film Bodyguard and was number one on the pop charts in 16 countries, including Germany , Austria , Switzerland , the United States and the United Kingdom, and achieved multiple platinum status.

The version of Dolly Parton

The song was written by Parton in 1973, recorded on RCA Records in Nashville in June 1973 , and released on Parton's album Jolene in February 1974 ; The producer was Bob Ferguson. The single was released in April 1974. The piece reached number 1 on the country charts in 1974 and in 1982 in a newly recorded version for the film The Most Beautiful House of Joy in Texas again top of the country and number 53 of the pop charts. In the mid-1970s, Elvis Presley wanted to record a cover version of the song. On the day of the recording, Presley's manager, Colonel Tom Parker , informed Parton that Presley would only record the song if he would get half of the release rights, which Parton declined.

In 1995 Parton recorded the song again, this time in a duet version with Vince Gill , and reached the charts for the third time with the same title. In 2003 the piece was voted number 16 of the “100 Greatest Songs in Country Music” by CMT and in 2004 it was voted number one of the “100 Greatest Country Love Songs”. In interviews, Parton said she wrote the piece for her former long-time partner and mentor, Porter Wagoner ; it was meant to express how much she valued what he had taught her.

Whitney Houston's version

1992 Whitney Houston recorded the song for the film Bodyguard , from whose soundtrack it was released as a single on November 3, 1992. David Foster was the producer ; the tenor saxophone solo was recorded by Kirk Whalum .

The piece was for many years the best-selling single in the USA and was included at number 68 in the "Billboard Greatest Songs of All Time". In Songs of the Century of the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) is ranked No. 108 and held with 14 weeks for some time to record the single, which was on the Billboard Hot longest number one 100th It was the number one Christmas hit of 1992 in the UK .

After Houston's death in early 2012, the song came back on the Billboard Hot 100. In the first week, the song was at number 7, a week later it reached number 3 on the charts. Also in Germany (19th place), Austria (10th place) and Switzerland (3rd place) the song made a return. Also in 2012, the song was described by the TV station RTL in the ultimate chart show as the "most successful world hit of all time".

Versions in other languages

In 1998 Angelika Milster recorded a German-language version entitled Es ist die Liebe zu Dir , which appeared on her album The Biggest Hits in Film History .

Music awards

In 1994 , the song won a Grammy for Single of the Year, and Houston received a Grammy for Best Female Vocal Performance - Pop. The piece was also awarded two American Music Awards and numerous other music prizes around the world.
