biography
Early years
Gill was born in Norman , Oklahoma . His father, J. Stanley Gill, was a lawyer and administrative judge who played in a country band and encouraged his son to become a musician. With the help of his father, Gill learned to play the banjo and guitar . When Gill was ten years old, his parents gave him a Gibson ES-335 and a Fender Super Reverb amplifier. Even in high school , Gill, who was also a talented golfer , played in the teenage band The Bluegrass Revue. At the age of 18 he became a member of the Bluegrass Alliance, in which Dan Crary also played. While Gill was still in high school. he joined the bluegrass band Flock and Mountain Smoke, which opened concerts for Kiss and Pure Prairie League . When he was 19, he moved to Los Angeles , where he joined Byron Berline 's Sundance Band . There he met Janis Oliver, his future wife, who soon became known as a member of the Sweethearts of the Rodeo .
Career
In 1978 he was hired as the lead singer of the country rock formation Pure Prairie League. A year later, Gill released the first album with the band, entitled Can't Hold Back . The group could not build on the successes of previous years, and so Gill got out after three years. With his wife and daughter, he moved to Nashville in 1982 , where he joined Rodney Crowell's band Cherry Bombs. In 1984 he released his first single, Turn Me Loose . With the next record, Victim of Life's Circumstances , he was able to place himself in the hit parade for the first time. He was named Best Young Singer of 1984 by the Academy of Country Music . In the following years he mainly worked as a session musician. He masters several instruments, sings and writes songs. The collaboration with Rosanne Cash , the daughter of Johnny Cash, was particularly intense .
In 1989 he was asked by Mark Knopfler to join the band Dire Straits as guitarist and singer . However, Gill was just signing a new record deal and turned down the offer. In the same year his breakthrough came with the album When I Call Your Name , which sold over three million times. The title song reached number 3 on the country charts and was named "Single of the Year" by the CMA in 1990 . In the same year Vince Gill received a Grammy for "Best Vocal Country Performance". In 1991 he was inducted into the Grand Ole Opry . His next albums Pocket Full Of Gold and I Still Believe in You also reached platinum status and numerous single releases made it into the country charts. His Christmas album Let There Be Peace On Earth also achieved excellent sales. In 2010 he joined the group The Time Jumpers and played in 2011 on the album Welcome 2 My Nightmare by Alice Cooper .
With the reunion of the country rock band Eagles in 2017, he is traded as a possible successor to the founding member, guitarist and singer Glenn Frey , who died in 2016 . Together with Frey's son Deacon , he is part of the line-up for the Eagles' North America tour in 2018.
Private
In 1998, the marriage with Janis Oliver was divorced. Two years later he married Amy Grant . They have one daughter and live in Nashville. His house has a home studio that recorded his Guitar Slinger and Bakersfield albums, as well as numerous other albums, and a swimming pool .
Gill has a penchant for Martin as well as old Fender and Gibson guitars . He mostly uses vintage instruments and owns around 300 guitars. In 2010, many guitars and amplifiers were destroyed by a flood.
In September 2013, Westboro Baptist Church supporters struck his concert at the Kauffman Center in Kansas City , Missouri . Followers called Gill an adulterer for abandoning his first wife.
Awards
In 2005 Gill was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame and in 2007 the Country Music Hall of Fame . In September 2012, he was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame . On November 5, 2014, Gill received the Irving Waugh Award of Excellence at the 48th CMA Awards.
