The Key is the ninth studio album by the American country musician Vince Gill . It was released on August 11, 1998 under the label MCA Nashville and was Gill's first number one album in the US country album charts.

Reception and charts

Allmusic music website critic Thom Jurek described the album as one of Gill's finest recordings. He awarded 4.5 of the five possible valuation units. Gary Dretzka of the Chicago Tribune commented on the album that this is what Nashville is all about, but no more. Entertainment Weekly's critic Alanna Nash gave the album an "A" rating. The album peaked at number one on the Billboard Country Album Chart and ranked eleventh on the Billboard 200 . In Canada, the album was number two on the country charts and number 25 on the RPM album charts. The single If You Ever Have Forever in Mind reached number one on the Canadian country singles charts. The other three singles, on the other hand, took middle places in the United States and Canada. The album was awarded a platinum record in the USA and gold in Canada .
