Patty Loveless
Patty Loveless (* 4. January 1957 as Patricia Lee Ramey in Pikeville , Kentucky ) is an American country - singer and two-time Grammy -Preisträgerin that in the 1990s, with over six million sold CDs of the most successful country artists their home belonged to.
biography
Loveless grew up in a modest family in the small town of Pikeville in the Appalachian Mountains . Her father worked in a coal mine. It was through him that she came into contact with country and bluegrass . The music of the Stanley Brothers , Lester Flatt & Earl Scruggs and Bill Monroe shaped the singer as a child. Loveless performed as a duo with her brother Roger before getting the chance to sing with the Wilburn Brothers as a teenager . She married the brothers' drummer, Terry Lovelace, and moved with him to North Carolina in 1976 . There she sang for many years in a local cover band and made experiences with alcohol and other drugs .
In 1985, the same year they were divorced, she recorded her first demo tape. She moved to Nashville , Tennessee and was soon discovered by the MCA record label , which she signed to. In the same year she had her first minor hit in the country charts with Lonely Days, Lonely Nights , which was followed by more in 1986. In 1987 she released her debut album with Patty Loveless . During this time it was already being produced by Emory Gordy, Jr., whom she married in February 1989. Patty Loveless only made her breakthrough in 1988 after a manager change with the album If My Heart Had Windows . Her mixture of traditional sounds, rock 'n' roll fragments and foreign compositions made the singer not only popular with the audience, but also a favorite of the critics who count her as part of the new traditionalist movement of the 1980s.
With If My Heart Had Windows , the Steve Earle title A Little Bit in Love and Blue Side of Town , she had her first top ten hits in the country charts in 1988. In the same year she became a permanent member of the Grand Ole Opry . The following year she was listed at number one for the first time with Timber I'm Falling in Love . The accompanying album Honky Tonk Angel (1988) stayed in the charts for over 100 weeks, went platinum for one million records sold and achieved another number one with Chains (1990). Loveless remained loyal to the MCA label until 1992 and still had a few top ten hits there. During this time she already noticed problems with her voice. In autumn 1992, the problems had come to a head, an aneurysm was found on her vocal cords . Loveless had an operation and after months without speaking, let alone singing, she was able to resume her career as a singer. In the summer of 1993 she played the album Only What I Feel , which was released by Epic . The album sold next to none of their previous records and the first single Blame It on Your Heart climbed back to number one.
Her greatest success came in 1995 when her album When the Fallen Angels Fly received the CMA Award for "Album of the Year". It was only the second time that a woman received this award (after Anne Murray 1984). The following year she received another award, this time as best singer. The singles You Can Feel Bad and Lonely Too Long from the album The Trouble with the Truth were their last number one hits in the country charts.
Loveless also sang duets with George Jones ( You Don't Seem to Miss Me , 1997) and Vince Gill ( My Kind of Woman, My Kind of Man , 1999), which reached the top 30 of the charts. Loveless received the best reviews of her career in 2001 for the bluegrass album Mountain Soul , which had nothing at all to do with the contemporary pop music trend in country music.
In 2009 she released another bluegrass-influenced album, Mountain Soul II , which won a Grammy in its category. Loveless continues to perform live but hasn't released a new album since 2009.
Loveless is a distant cousin of Loretta Lynn and her sister Crystal Gayle .
