Dwight Yoakam
Dwight David Yoakam (born October 23, 1956 in Pikeville , Kentucky ) is an American country singer, songwriter and actor. The two-time Grammy Award winner has sold over eleven million records over the course of his career.
Life
Beginnings
He started playing the guitar at the age of six. He gained his first acting experience at school performances. After dropping out of college, Yoakam decided to try his hand at country music and moved to Nashville in 1977 . At the time, mainstream country was largely dominated by pop influences. It was the culmination of the urban cowboy movement. Dwight Yoakam, who was based on Buck Owens and Merle Haggard and their Bakersfield sound , found little approval with his rougher style and then moved to Los Angeles , where the scene was more receptive to traditional country music.
Music career
Yoakam quickly gained a foothold on the California scene. Its audience was made up not only of country enthusiasts, but also of rock fans and even punks. He earned his living as a truck driver. A self-financed album got him a record deal with the Reprise label in 1984 . In 1986 his debut album Guitars, Cadillacs, Etc. Etc . His debut work was sold over a million times and the single releases reached high positions in the country charts.
His second album, Hillbilly Deluxe , was also successful. With a single from his third album, he made his first number 1 hit in 1988: Streets of Bakersfield . He recorded this song with his idol Buck Owens. The following productions also achieved consistently high hit parade placements. The somewhat idiosyncratic and non-conformist Yoakam often lagged behind country stars like George Strait or Randy Travis with its sales figures .
In 1993 he made his generally best-regarded album, This Time . It sold 1.9 million copies and put a number of singles high on the US country charts. He was awarded a Grammy for the single Ain't That Lonely Yet .
In 2016 he recorded a bluegrass album with Swimmin 'Pools, Movie Stars ... that reached the top 10 of the country and number one on the bluegrass charts and contains a cover version of the Prince song Purple Rain .
Acting
His career as an actor developed parallel to his musician career. He had his first small appearance in 1993 in the Nicolas Cage - Dennis Hopper film Red Rock West . His song A Thousand Miles from Nowhere can be heard in the playback trailer . He got his first leading role in 1996 in Sling Blade . In South of Heaven, West of Hell , he also directed. In 2002 he played the role of the masked "Raoul" in Panic Room .
In 2006 he got a supporting role in Crank , in which he plays alongside Jason Statham as Doctor Miles. He continued this role in Crank 2: High Voltage in 2009 .
Instruments
Dwight Yoakam prefers to play Gibson flat-top guitars , mainly J-45 and Dove models. In his honor, the company released the Dwight Yoakam Honky Tonk Deuce signature guitar .
He also uses a 1972 Martin D-28. The company honored him for this with their Dwight Yoakam DD28 Signature Edition.
