Goliath is an American crime - legal drama of Amazon Studios . The series was created based on ideas from David E. Kelley and Jonathan Shapiro. The eight-part first season was published on October 16, 2016 on Amazon Video , the German-language version has been available since November 18, 2016. Leading actor Billy Bob Thornton received a Golden Globe in 2017 for his performance on the series .

The once successful lawyer Billy McBride, whose name is still part of the powerful law firm Cooperman & McBride , which he founded with his former colleague Donald Cooperman, now lives in a shabby motel on Santa Monica Pier and welcomes his clients in a pub next door .
season 1
Defense attorney Patty Solis-Papagian asks him to assist her in a civil lawsuit against his former law firm. Her client Rachel, the sister of Ryan Larson, who worked for the well-known defense company Borns Tech, has doubts about the alleged suicide of her brother, who died two years earlier in an explosion on his boat. Together they begin looking for evidence and filing a lawsuit. But Rachel and Billy McBride are facing two powerful and influential opponents with his former law firm and the defense company.

The host of Billy's regular bar Chez Jay , Oscar, loses two sons who were active in drug gangs in a shootout. His youngest son Julio is arrested on suspicion of having shot a drug dealer and his middleman in revenge. Reluctantly, Billy takes over Julio's defense at Oscar's insistence.
season 3
A friend of Billy's, who wanted to spend her retirement years as a winemaker in the Central Valley with her husband , dies when a hole opens up on her property. Billy is supposed to investigate whether illegal water abstraction by the neighboring agribusiness can be blamed.

Under the title Trial , Amazon announced in July 2015 that it wanted to produce a lawyer series under the direction of genre specialist David E. Kelley , on whose ideas series such as Ally McBeal and Boston Legal were based. Originally, the producers were interested in Kevin Costner as the lead actor, but when he declined, Billy Bob Thornton was hired. Amazon ordered the series in early December 2015 and cast other roles with Maria Bello , Tania Raymonde , William Hurt , Olivia Thirlby and Molly Parker . In June 2016, Amazon Trial renamed Goliath and announced a release in Fall 2016.
In February 2017, Amazon announced the production of a second season, which was released on June 15, 2018 on Amazon Video. The third season has been available since October 4, 2019.

“The lightness of Ally McBeal has given way to gloomy hardness, Kelley's new representative of the guild can be a broken hero. Goliath is always exciting enough for eight episodes, but narrative the series is only unusual in the eyes of the New York Times. Their critics had declared the structure of the series to be too complicated in his review; later he found out that he had swapped the first two episodes. "
“Overall, Amazon's Goliath is a gripping series about the old conflict between being right and being right. In terms of narration and staging, it is somewhere on the scale between serious, socially critical quality series and entertainment series peppered with trashy situations - and is thus very much in the tradition of Kelley's earlier series (does anyone remember the elevator death in LA Law ?). If you are willing to ignore some overly superficial clichés, it will be difficult to escape this story. "
